We recently purchased a Volvo C70 for our daughter as she recently became of age to drive. We live in Florida, so there is really no need for AWD. Volvo is one of the safest names in the auto industry. During inclement weather, simply drive slower and more cautiously and you should have a safe journey. Common sense = Safety.

Im not a Subaru offcianto, but a friend of mine had an Impreza Brighton Edition. seemed to be a basic model. No tach. It did have A/C, but no cd or tape player, no cruise or power anything. I rode it in a few times, but he said it was front wheel drive. I didn't see a rear differential when I've followed behind his car sometimes.

I am seriously confused as to why Braking has been brought up at all in this conversation. This has nothing to do with braking. The bottom line is RWD is the way to go. With todays esp/traction control systems they can compete with most fwd cars and as for AWD. The only reason you should even consider AWD is if you live in a snowy region and even then you could get by easily by tossing some snow tires on a RWD if you felt like it.
Well this is for advertising purposes i suppose but any experienced driver could get the cars off the line with no difficulty. Oh and FWD is for pussies its all about RWD.
These demos forget about weight transfer, which is the reason why RWD works so well on the majority of surfaces (namely wet tarmac and dry tarmac). With such a low degree of friction as in this demo, the weight transfer to the rear wheels is minimal and 4WD is therefore superior. So all this test does is prove that 4WD is better on snow and ice.
If these are Germans doing the testing, where's the home country favorite Audi quattro? The REAL test would be quattro versus Subaru on identical tires. Depending upon the test, it might be a tie.

RWD is better in start cause 70% of vehicle weight is at rear wheels when accelerating
FWD is better in anything. But not in acceleration cause the wheels would not get enough traction and will start spining...
AWD is superior.

@gazzxr fwd is shit at everything, because all its weight is over the front, where as rear wheel( the best) has a much better balance, better acceleration when there is grip, better cornering, better stopping.. AWD is only better than RWD when there is very little grip.

@d9thwonder FWD is only good for cheap grocery getters. Cars that are built cheaply to be sold to the masses, where the only performance driving you do will be getting up to speed on the motorway. RWD is a much better package for performance cars. All of the great sports cars have RWD for a reason; it just works. It allows for better weight distribution and allows the front wheels to get on with steering while the back powers it. AWD is just for faggots.

FYI, I daily drove an E39 M5 for 2 years in all sorts of treacherous conditions... snow, ice; you name it. It never got stuck once. So the argument that RWD cars are useless in slippery conditions isn't entirely true. It helps to have AWD, sure, but it isn't a must-have requirement if you at least know some car control.

This has been said by quite a few people already, but I just have to join them and point out how retarded and biased this "test" is. Of course an AWD will have an overall better grip than a 2WD, but really, crushing the pedal like it raped your wife and daughter right before killing your dog while forcing you to watch it all isn't going to help you in a FWD or RWD. Unless you're trying to sell a Subaru.
This is from someone who just bought an Impreza, this week, and is loving it, mind you.

@2741718 IMO it proves that AWD has more grip than 2wd with traction control ... you'd expect the traction control to be at least on par with a awd system (especially one with open differentials front and rear like the legacy has). Still goes to show that Subaru is an absolute beast when it comes to low grip situations.

I am seriously confused as to why Braking has been brought up at all in this conversation. This has nothing to do with braking. The bottom line is RWD is the way to go. With todays esp/traction control systems they can compete with most fwd cars and as for AWD. The only reason you should even consider AWD is if you live in a snowy region and even then you could get by easily by tossing some snow tires on a RWD if you felt like it.

These demos forget about weight transfer, which is the reason why RWD works so well on the majority of surfaces (namely wet tarmac and dry tarmac). With such a low degree of friction as in this demo, the weight transfer to the rear wheels is minimal and 4WD is therefore superior. So all this test does is prove that 4WD is better on snow and ice.

stupid test!!! for the last one obvious biased, if you start the car full throttle of course it's going to skid(even on dry roads it does that). look at the car on the left taking in slow and easy(no skid).

Dude. HE has AWD. I have a '99 Subaru Outback. It doesn't matter house WET the roads are. The thing won't slip hardly at all. It needs snow and ice before it will slip. Stop being totally bias against Subaru's. The test was with two German cars and conducted by Germans. Do you think they wanted to show that their cars couldn't handle little Subaru's? No. The AWD beat them. Fair and square

@Rado3487 The left car doesn't take it slow and easy. It is an AWD Subaru. The one in the vid is a Legacy. I have a '99 Impreza with the 2.2l (same engine) that is lighter than the Legacy and it is still hard to spin the tires on wet roads.

@Rado3487 The purpose of the test is to compare how much traction each car has pointing at the benefits of the AWD system. So both accelerated full throttle but since the Subaru has the AWD, it managed to make it smoothly off the line while others were spinning tires.....that's it, so no bias.

If you look closely, the Mondeo is pulling off quickly, same as the Legacy estate which I use to own. If you watch the front wheels on the Mondeo, they spin trying to get grip but it's back wheels are going slow, it's not biased, the Subaru will be at full throttle when taking off, but as it's got all symmetrical AWD it won't spin, but just pulls away. I love my AWD B4 RSK.
