Chet did have a substantial reputation for Loving any music, as Long as it was, as long as iy WAS GOOD! This was excellent! I gotta hand it to him!! :-)
AT LAST SOME INTELLIGENT COMMENTS NOT CRITIZISM(SORRY CANT SPELL WELL)GOOD MUSIC IS GOOD MUSIC GREAT MUSICIANS ARE GREAT,.SOME DAYS YOU LIKE ONES WORK SOME DAYS YOU LIKE ANOTHERS WORK. SORRY FOR NOT BE AS ARTICULATE AS YOU ALL MAYBE BUT THE MESSAGE IS IN THE MUSIC
2 things. 1) This is awesome. I love this version and while I don't really speak Russian, the actual/original song is so powerful. 2) Did Chet Atkins receive flak for covering this? I'm assuming, given the years his career spent, this was recorded during the Cold War.
Guys....really....comparing Django and Chet? Two very different players and both masters in their own field(s). Dissing any of the two is just plain foolish. To honour one doesn't call for putting down the other. Wise up, it's music, not sports.
For those of you who enjoy Mr. Atkins, you might also enjoy the early solo works of the late Clarence White. There's an album called 33 Acoustic Songs. He was very young when he made it, and it's just him playing old country standards and traditionals, and it sounds like 2 or 3 people playing. He would later go on to play Bluegrass with the Kentucky Colonels, before joining The Birds. He also invented the B-String bender, an interesting device that never really caught on.
Speed is a ridiculous criteria, only Kids without creative abilities would ever think speed is the ultimate (whatever). Check out the difference between Joe Venuti and Stephane Graphelli, or Claude Black and Stuff Smith. It is all in the creative remaking of new sounds with melodies once reduced to a score. Example, Gypsy Dance 5 played classically can get my blood boiling as easily as when it is remade using Jazz improvisation.
@swingingfred I have everything Chet ever recorded, and I know full well that Chet was capable of speed when he wanted to. In fact I could site several recordings where his speed was blinding. He didn't flaunt it. He used it when he felt the tune called for it.
@Twangmusicman I love chet atkins but He's the best of the style he plays. Paco De Lucia tho in my opinion is the greatest Flamenco guitarist. So he is the greatest guitarist ever for the songs he plays while Paco De Lucia is the greatest for Flamenco Music
@nesci1234, Props to Chet and the other greats however I don't think it fair to compare them to Paco. Paco is from another universe. After listening to guitar players for the past 50 years I find Paco to be the most exciting and beautiful player I've ever heard. Ever!!
@kencc4791 Paco De Lucia is something else but I think Paco Pena is great to. Chet was a very versatile player that had many styles. Chet aside being the great one in his time praised some of the newer crop of guitarists eg. Scotty Anderson, Brent Mason, George Benson. Chet was a sleeper he could pull off amazing skills out of nowhere. Comparing loses music sense. Its like saying my dad is bigger than your dad. Myself I love Flamenco but to a point then I need to hear another style of music.
see guys you have guitar players then you have guitar pickers then there is chet atkins! mr. guitar you are missed. p.s metal metalkirby777 you are so right!!!

Absolutely amazing. This is country music at its finest.
Now days all you get is a bunch of generic sappy shit.
Jerry Reed, Chet Atkins and so on, will live on forever.

If one could combine The Chord melody soloing of Chet plus Django's Gypsy picking, then that would be a most awesome rendition.

Great playing, considering he plays a tenth of the speed Django could...with just 2 fingers!!!!!

I really like the live version (at the Opry?) - At that point He had been playing this awhile. It's a little different, as well as smoother, cleaner.

There is, indeed, a reason why every time the words "Chet Atkins" are mentioned in words or print, the words "The Great" precede them.
