  • ray charles made this nd he wants to steal it!!!!

  • @Atomicflash500, Spandou ballet: cool white boys in suits. When I had to go to job interviews, I thought about them & suave Richard Gere. Got the job 2

@everyone, Natives of Paris, France, Beverly Hills, Ca, Brooklyn, NY, Houston, TX, Harlem, NY all speak a certain dialect. So does eminem, Tiger Woods, & Samuel Jackson.

  • Comment removed

  • @networkofsales what are you talking about man ?

  • @bobluman4 Those who don't understand dialect, grab the dictionary (no disrespect). People tend to favor the way people whom grew up with talk. Some people like Ricky Nelson's version, some like Ray Charles. I dig good talent in any case... If you think Im crazy, then you would not have understood *Artists* like Ricky's and Ray's ability to harmonize in a duet together and create something interesting...

  • @networkofsales buddy i love all the versions of this song i love both ray Charles and ricky nelson

  • @bobluman4 I could sort of tell you were just messin with me and the fact that I was babblin on... ;) - so, you know where Im comin from... heh. behave man!

  • @networkofsales hahaha good song though

  • God bless the Hillbillies and screw the purists. Get a day job!

  • Who would have guessed that James Burtton would still be playing this behind some guy named Elvis some years later.

  • James Burton explêndido!! 10

  • wanda jackson lets have aparty

  • sounds a bit light... still prefer the Ray Charles version.. but then it could just be because I heard that one 1st...

  • Bassy working hard

  • On the lead guitar: James Burtton

  • I enjoy all good singers and songs, I couldn't care less what colour there skin is .

  • hate the ivy league suits

  • Great version!!! and seeing James Burton what a freakin gem!!!

  • what an artist !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • pleaseeeeeeeeeee keep adding more ricky

  • love james burtons playing

  • I know I'm a year late, but great video!! Love James on the Tele... at least he didn't have to learn a new song when Elvis did "I Got A Woman" live... very close to the same riffs. Awesome!

  • He may have been a "teen idol," but the man could rock. Great back-up band; James Burton did indeed play guitar with Elvis after gigging with Rick. Also remember, rock & roll was a forerunner of integration in the US. These artists not only knew and did each other's songs, many of them knew each other, too. (Both Fats Domino and Ricky had separate hits with "I'm Walkin,' for example.) Rock on, Rick - now David's back in your audience, too. (RIP David Nelson, 1/11/11)

  • That guy on the right ... was he part of Elvis tour in the 70's? As for Rickly singing a "black mans" song... Ray Charles may have re wrote it from a gospel song, but it was ELVIS that brought it to the white ppl. And if Elvis could do it, WHY NOT RICKY?!

  • If you have Soul, you have Soul no matter the color of your skin,,,,

  • music is music weather were black or white , indian , hispanic if u got the music and the want then u go for it , no one can run ur life , its what u want , ELVIS proved every one wrong , MLK made his point and got it through , i respect them 2 for stepping in and going the extra mile to get the dream real , so no matter the song or who wrote it if u want to sing it then u do so , who knows u might end up on a front cover of some big business , ROCK ON !!!!!

  • James Burton is playing lead guitar

  • Who is the lead guitarist and the drummer?

  • this is my fave ricky song ever :)

  • @jadeyfamous its not rickys song, its ray charles song and this is a poor cover

  • @baydough100 but he is white

  • this just as much country as it is rhythmn and blues. in equal parts.

  • Ricky's sooooooo cute!!! :D<3

  • oh, he better be talking about me :)

  • He's hot!!

  • i wish he was refering to me.

  • They cook!

  • oh and by the way seanryan2001!! i have no problem with whites recording black music but during this time it was straight up high jacking of the music no royalties no credit no thank you and most important no respect !!!!

  • @mars281 Black people DID get royalities, Little Richard got money from Pat Boone when he covered his songs, same thing with most people, all-in-all, the music business wasn't nice to either black or white people. You can have soul without it being your song, there's lots of good covers. I think you're just trying to have a reason to bitch on racism. Almost nobody likes racism, bur complaining at Ricky Nelson isn't the right place.

  • @mars281 well Otis Blackwell made a great living from the songs he wrote for Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis, he had no complaints about white singers recording his music. Other black songwriters who wrote for Elvis were paid well and never complained. You go on about highjacking, take 'hound dog', who ripped off that song first, it was rufus thomas a black Dj who brought out a song called 'bearcat', same tune. From the 50's till today, everybody steals from songs, got nothing to do with color.

  • @mars281 This was like 50 years ago, you really don't know who was paid or not. Calling it "white wash with no soul" is what is making people respond to you. If you like the "soulful black version" then go look it up instead of writing nonsense on THIS version which THESE people came here to listen to. No one is forcing you to listen.

  • listen to the original this is white wash people... what garbage!!! this doenst sound as good because it has no soul because it is not his work!!! fabrications and lies!!!

  • James needed a little close up lovin during that solo. damn

  • Rick's rhythm section for years, James 'The Man' Burton on guitar, Richie Frost on Drums and Joe OsBorne on Bass. Arguably the best back up, rhythm section going from about 1955 to 1965. If you want to hear the guys with Rick really rocking, get your hands on My Buckets Got a Hole In It, I believe what you say, I got a feeling, and Stood Up. RIP Rickey

  • My Mom and I would look forward to Rick singing at the end of the show. This is probably from around 1965 or 66.

  • Noblat viado@

  • Fantastic band, with james Burton and Joe Osborn probably one of the best back ups of the time. Does anybody know the drummer's name? Funny detail: At 2.07 he hits the break one bar too early but doesn't seem to be bothered.

  • Cool !

  • great song

  • The bass line in this song is ridiculous!! Wicked!

  • This man is really talented. He deserved a recognition. I can see he's a simple and shy guy with good heart. Love you Ricky!

  • music is made to be enjoyed, who gives two shits who wrote it and what colour their skin was, all i care about is the sound and i think its damn fine!

  • @rockakitty1993 You Tell Em Honey !

  • how about just loving the music and cut the political crap

  • Who is the woman he kept trying to find after his DAd paid her to let him alone?

    real name not fake name...

  • Is that a young James Burton on lead guitar,???

  • You bet it is.

  • That's great backing!!!!

    Love that bass.

  • James Burton's great as ever, who's the bass player?! That bassline's tremendous! I thought it might be Joe Osborn, who played with Ricky Nelson at some point, anyone else know?

  • @a481031r It certainly is Joe Osborn - my all-time favourite bass-player. So inventive.

  • some energy lacks...

  • James Burton, one of the greatest guitarists of all time, excelled from then up to and including all his work with Elvis. Way to go, James!

  • I am no musician, but I am a music lover. Everything from Miles to Muddy Waters, Etta James, Bless her Soul, Patsy Cline, Leonard Cohen, Dave Brubeck, Damien Rice...I love Ricky. He was cool when I was a kid and I am sorry he passed. Hey? Was it Ricky, the Kingston Trio, or Ray who got me to love it so? Come on, just give it up for a white kid who tried...

  • Im a musician and know alot about music.. but thats not what this is about.. I actually dig Ricky Nelson.. But this is a prime example of what white people did to "colored music" (Im white) but really?? this like the "black kid" in high school wrote a song and the "preppy" quarterback played it at the dance.. Ray Charles whatever your faults or demons may be.. we all have them.. but you OWN this song.. FOREVER

  • @justingarman This is the tightest 1958-64 L.A. young Hot Rockabilly hit 4-piece unit average age about 19. Great numbers are always interpreted in many styles, and Ray Charles did at least one Country album and had a huge hit with a Don Gibson country number. True artists know no boundaries and respect each other.

  • @justingarman But Ray Charles loved to play country music, recorded Hank WIlliams songs and did it really well. Oh but I forgot; he was blind, couldnt see.

But then maybe he saw better than you what this is all about.

  • this makes me mad

  • I did asked one of the nelson brotheres if there was a Mary Lou,, no he said it just rymed to lou, oh well

  • The drummer is good, too. Sits like Ringo. I guess that's whom he was learning from.

  • @banjanac Learning from Ringo's dad maybe. Richard Starr was a snotty scouse kid when this ace 1958 L.A. Rockabilly 4-piece was storming the worldwide charts. No U.S. Original Rockin '50s Rock n Roll, no Beatle boys no Brit beat - no doubt !

  • Lennon was once asked if Ringo was the best drummer in Rock, he answered,

" He's not even the best drummer in the Beatles ! "

Rock On Ringo my son even if youve closed your web to fans - peace and peace and peace and love. The Ricky Nelson Combo Burton/Kirkland/Garf /Frost & all unbeaten in their time and in our time.

  • cant remember the lead guitarists name right now, but his chicken picken with the strings broke NEW GROUND back then from memory on lead guitars, made the whole joint stand up and take a real good hard look at what he was doing with his axe, Burton was his last name i think, ??? let me know anybody..cheer,s !!

  • James Burton. Also guitarist for Elvis till the end.

  • yes mate thats right, hey thanks for replying that was good of you, merry x mas!

  • yeah ricky nelson viva

  • no lo puedo creer, tiene un parecido a Christian Mayer, siiiiiiiii

  • i loved the video i think thay are the good times u got very good music from trent. p.s u guys really rock .

  • This version is good for what it is, elvis' is good too Ray's the best imo. Music is recreated and sampled all the time, I never seen Ray make a huge fuss over it, why? because he got paid, nobody stole anything. Thats the way the game is.

  • What a Bass player!

  • What a bass-player indeed! The GREAT Joe Osborn, who's played on more hit records than you and I have had hot dinners. Go check his web site out! For me he's the outstanding player of that generation.

  • Awesome. The bass player is going nuts and James Burton itakes a great solo. The band is kickin'. Ricky Nelson rocks harder than Elvis ever could and he didn't have to move an inch !! Bring back this music somebody !! Play from the heart

  • com Elvis é bem melhor!!!

  • o yes, great voice :) i like mary lou and travelin man

  • Well... after all, Ray was in a league of his own as a singer/musician, but Ricky still was real, smooth rockin' cat.

  • i like rays the best actually and im white!

  • i'm balck and i am 25 yrs old .. i think he was out his league when he coevered this.. but he has a nice voice

  • Yeah, and Beyonce isn't doing covers of Catholic hymns composed by an upper-class white man (Bach). You're right, Sierria64, Ricky was WAY out of his league (*sarcasm*).

And you obviously have no idea how the music industry operates. $20 says Ricky didn't even pick the song.

Stop thinking in terms of race and start thinking in terms of MUSIC (if you did think they way you indicated at the end, you wouldn't have mentioned your race).

  • @ORUPRANKSTAZ Ricky said his two biggest musical heroes were Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley, and this is the kind of stuff they did, and they had more control over there song choices in there early careers than Ricky did, but Ricky's father and the record company wanted him to be more of a ballad singer, that's why he recorded tunes like "Poor Little Fool" which he hated and did not want released as a single! This, however, is the kind he liked more!

  • Comment removed

  • Playing various versions of this song and I think this is a very workmanlike job. Rick had the good fortune to include James Burton - the original chicken picker - in his band so always had that touch of class that set him apart. Can't decide wheher Elvis or Ray are tops on this number.

  • white people stole all our music buls####

  • You should thank God each and every day for "white folk", ----just try and imagine where you might be WITHOUT them.

  • Just because your parents are brother and sister, you don't have to expose the result here on Youtube.

  • okay thank white people .... im black and 25 in watts la ... lets see ...oh yes thank them whites for stealing our music , enslavement and chains

  • So your saying if your white your not allowed to record black music.Thats as stupid as saying Tiger Woods shouldnt play golf, seeing as golf was invented and dominated for years, by white people.

  • black people do nothing but complain, so of course they will blame white people for all their problems- and regarding slavery- Africans sold their own people into slavery

  • @Seanryan2001 This guy sucks,an elvis clone he certainly was.

  • @2344321000 your an idiot

  • @Seanryan2001 Couldn't agree with you more. I seem to recall Ray Charles doing a lot of country songs that were not written by blacks. And, he also sang both Yesterday and Eleanor Rigby. To carry this rascist BS further, would we want to see baseball or basketball played only by whites? I think not. Some people should just shut up and enjoy the music. If they don't like a particular version, that's their choice, but they should keep their rascist views to themselves.

  • @Seanryan2001 tiger woods isnt black

  • @BlacknesUnforgivable i never said tiger woods was black, i was saying that he is not white.Tiger Woods has done for golf what Elvis did for black music in the 50's, they both broke down the race barrier.

  • @BlacknesUnforgivable Tiger Woods isn't black. Obama isn't black. Speaking of which.. Why couldn't we have gotten a COOL black man for President.. like Samuel L Jackson.. Instead we got this mutt JOKE.. Who will probably ruin it for every black man in the future.. Sad right?

  • Remember him from my young times,in Norway.

  • Elvis mutch better than Ray

  • Great job Rick, but all I can say is 'Play It James'!

  • Ricky is one of the best talents ever.

He will be even more loved as the years go by.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • Thanks for the post.

  • great job!

  • This has got to be one of the coolest rock videos. The bass player is AWESOME. Underrated underrated

  • Elvis' version from his first album in '56 absolutely smokes. No hint of R&B, just sharp, raw and intense blues rock.

  • James Burton is da man.

  • Those girls sure are quiet..they'd be screaming their heads of with Elvis singin'

  • Vicki Tasso sings a song dedicated to Ricky Nelson called "Dear Ricky". You can find it here on youtube. Its a must hear for Ricky fans and for fans of the oldies.

  • I can't find it. I'd love to hear it.

  • Yea it looks like unfortunately they took it off unfortunately. Maybe someone will post it again.

  • ray charles did it first!

i suggest u to watch Ray movie

  • elvis has a tight version too.

  • Ray charles had soul playing, but Elvis was ok playing it.

  • Ricky Nelson is great!

Elvis did the song best ever!

I think Ricky was an elvis imitator...

  • And naturally James Burton backed Elvis in the 70's on this song. Burton loks great in this video wtih Ricky Nelson.

  • his voice is better when he sings low...he cant hit high notes like elvis could

  • this is the worst song Rick ever recorded in my opinion.

  • stevie wonder also did it

but i think we all agree when i say that ray's version is the best

  • crap, elvis did this in 56 and is the best

  • Ray Charles did it first and as far as I'm concerned (and I'm sure many agree with me) all three singers did a great job on this song! So there "raspberry!!!!!"!

  • The tone of Burton's tele caster, I maximum

I don't come out of this tone readily.

  • Not enough soul :P

Ray is much better :) <3

  • i agree 100%

  • Not as good as Ray Charles but Ricky rocks fine. Good cover.

  • Ricky Nelson Rocks!!!

  • What a nice guitar solo man...!!!

  • does anyone know who originally wrote this song?

  • sometimes it pays to be an idiot: we keep the assholes in line

  • I'd be afraid to a question. Someone might call me an idiot.

  • lol

  • Ironic that James Burton is playing guitar in this, considering he must've played it with Elvis back in the 1970's.

  • Ricky really rocks - great clip, great song, great performance!

  • I got a woman, way over town She's good to me, aw yeah Well I got a woman, way over town She's good to me, woh yeah Oh she's my baby, don't you understand Yes, and I'm her lovin' man I got a woman, way over town She's good to me, aw yeah She's saved her lovin', kissin and a huggin' Aw just for me, aw yeah She's saved her lovin', kissin and a huggin' Baby just for me, woh yeah
  • i think ricky nelson is a pretty cool guy. eh plays music and doesnt afriad of anything.

  • What can he be affraid by ?

  • Plane crashes.

  • do you know that jerry lee lewis sold him this famous plane he's been killed by ?

  • Lol I didn't know that. Maybe he planted a defect in the plane for lulz.

  • Ricky Nelson rules my heart!

  • *sighs* I look at the comments and realise how much people can't appreciate good music. I'm 23 and grew up on the greats, and my Mum is a huge Rick Nelson fan. I know his life story (did a project on it), and would love to know what would have happened if not for that plane crash.

My favourite is Garden Party, then Lonesome Town, and I love him in all his movies and The Nelsons. What can I say - I just love him.

    Thank you for uploading this.

  • Looks like a young Tom Cruise.

  • I thought so too, but Nelson is a little better looking.

  • ya and i love that guitar on the lead guitarist...great song...and i swear ive never seen a straighter hairline

  • James Burton on lead guitar.Superb.

  • Ray Charles Rulezz...

  • yes he does.

this one is ok but he sucks comparing to Ray.

Some white americans might deny the roll of black american in building america and paying for that with long slavery but they cannot deny them their contribution to american music.they brought to this world countless of great singers. Ragga, rap, hip hop, jazz, soul and blues, and rock and roll were all black music at first.

Ray charls, little richard, Michael jackson, and many more.

  • I agree with you one hundred percent. i am German by genetics but I know better than to think America would be where it is without the melting and blending of all the great cultures that make up its population.

  • bless you man.

Of course it is not just african american.

Every individual, every culture is great in a way.

  • it's cool to hear this song sung by all the greats....ray, elvis, and ricky...

    oh...and now, jamie foxx.

  • When it comes down to it,you can't compare between Elvis and Ricky and whoever sings this song......Because their voices are different and frankly I think both versions are great!!!!!!

  • What in the blue hell??? I like Elvis' version better than this crap and Ray Charles version is better than Elvis'. This sounds like pure-bread white honkey-tonk trash. It's no wonder those white boys riped off the black artist not only in sound and music, but also tried to make it their own. To hell with crossing over. If you hear something good, black music, whites are taking it and making it their own. Even today, where is Vanilla Ice? GONE. Robin Thicke is next.

  • Apples vs. apples comparison, yes. However, the lead guitar is James Burton, who was Elvis' guitarist during the 60's and 70's. Scotty Moore played for Elvis before.

  • Can you git rid of emen em too?? The big cash was in the publishing, so Ray, Fats,Lil Ricard etc made plenty 'o money from Rick's covers. Blacks have always sung white songs too(Amazing Grace for one little starter)so git off your damn high horse. Ray loved his Georgia,

Over the Rainbow, Born to Loose, Stormy Weather (all written by whites)!

  • Rick is no Ray BUT he definitely swings on this. One of Ray's biggest successes was his 2Modern Sounds in Country Western lps. Mucho dinero from them!! He focused on country in the majority of his recordings during his later years too. Don't talk smack if you aint got the facts!

  • They MAY have been written by whites, but that's not what my complaint is. I could care less WHO wrote the song, it's who sings the song first and yes, we can get rid of Em too.

  • Stevieand Marvin did a ton of covers and usually did them better than the white original versions, just like all the white songs (composers and original singers) I listed above(a few among Many)that Ray did.

  • Like what Mavis Staples said many years ago:

"When the Beatles sang Hey Jude I loved it, when Wilson Pickett sang it I BOUGHT it"

  • By your rules: Ree should have never cut Respect and Otis shouldn't have done Try A Little Tenderness (which Aretha did a killer cover of too-before OR did)

  • time to go watch peanuts and pro wrestling again,jr. Composers love a singer to make a song "their own" and are flatterd when their songs are recorded by different artists from different genres. Did you want Aretha to sing Bridge Over Troubled Water like Simon &G, or Spanish Harlem/Don't Play That Song like Ben E King?(Rhyme) Hell NO!

  • I think Rick does a great job on this version, personally!

  • j'aime bien cette version.

  • listen to that bass player! if anything he should get credit for that.

  • Yup, every one of them deserves much more credit than they will ever get. But some of us know and appreciate their musical contribution and talent. Each was an original and have proven to be lasting classics. Rick did what only Rick Nelson could do for the music he loved. He will always be my favorite. Covering one of his songs was my ticket into a major recording company. Thanks to the whole Nelson family for many wonderful memories.

  • hmmm Ricky Nelson does sucks. Lonesome Town is the only vocal performance from him i feel anything from. Elvis live version of I Got A Woman is still the best version ive heard. Ricky is to much of a pansy to sing this with any conviction or raw sexuality.

  • This song has African-American musical history behind it whereas something like "Lonesome Town" has a more European feel. I don't mean anything bad by that, just that someone who's family was Swedish-American has a different voice than someone who's family was African-American. In European music, emotion is expressed more in the melody and chords than in the vocal delivery. Both same ideas, but in different contexts.

  • That was a stupid oversimplification but ... my theory as to why this version sucks. He just came from a different background. Elvis was singing gospel in churches from an early age. Sorry for such a dumb comment. Wish I could delete those.

  • I thought Piaf, Aznavour, Jagger, Callas, Springfield all had rather emotional deliveries.

  • It gets better in the middle. And considering he's Ozzie and Harriet's son, did you expect him to start grinding the mic stand or something? Just singing the song is incredible, helping bring the music to the general population and making it acceptable for white kids to listen to "black" music.

  • elvis version his ham bone wannabe. Rick sings it truer, in his own stlyle. RAY CARLES owns this song so git off your Elvis crap.
