@wathen004 Garden City is one of a few towns in southwest Kansas with meat packing plants. The work has always attracted Mexicans. Tyson foods has one of their largest plants in this region of the state along with Cargill and National Beef in neighboring Dodge City Kansas.
I was wondering why there is such a large Hispanic population in this town (and maybe all of Kansas). I'm from the gulf coast in Texas and now live in north Florida and there are not many Hispanics here, at least not to what I'm used to in Texas.
love the video travis, while yes this does make gc look bad these places do exist as im sure they do in all citys, every city has its blemishes, not all of gc is like this.
still nice vdeo man, when can we meet up for a shoot?
im apr stage 1 tuned goint stage 2 in a few mnths...willing to pay youve come along ways since you did me and my wifes family/senior pix
If anyone doesnt like this video...make your own....simple as that. But usually people who take time out of their day to rain on other peoples parade.....have no water left to grow or create anything their self.I enjoyed it......NEM
this the same way ive seen garden city growning up some people live better than others but that dont mean any one is better. garden isnt that nice and it isnt that bad this is our culture in garden dont matter wat color i walk down the street and this is wat i see it garden come on now everybody hates but they still love becuase its home. its a great video on our culture
I like your video. I would have liked more photos that showed the culture and deeper personality of the town. If that would have been more apparent I think you and your audience would enjoy this video more. But also true art requires the observant to gain a lasting impression that allows them to go back and think about the art much after they have left the piece. And I cannot deny that your photographs have that. Overall I'd say Good Job.
I only wanted for people to know that is not a true dipiction of the vid and its falsehood made me angry to say that it was. The vid is moving (obviously it got my panties in a twist) and its very dramatic and well done, I just think it isnt truthful to say its Garden City. He could have tagged it differently and it would have been more honest. Showing the "negative" isnt negative if you let people know its not the entire narrative. Anyway its Travs opinion, just disagree w/all my heart.
@shadowracer26 Tom you miss my point, when I am angry I guess I dont make it well. I dont believe GC is perfect or even that it cant be shown as imperfect its how Travis tried to pass the vid off as Garden City...its a part of Garden City, and not even a whole section of it, he tagged it as his representation of Garden City and the begining intro voice says alot about his negative view of his compilation of pics...its not accurate...now if he had titled it differently then it would be different
@julsfine Honestly I'm appalled that you can be so offended by this video and yet not feel, or even understand, the social convention of abusive communication. You took this video to be abusive to your hometown's image, yet your language towards his unapparent "agenda" were incredibly unwarranted. Do you always speak this off-kilter on the internet? Do you not question your comments before you post them? I know most of this generation feels this is okay, and maybe your youth explains this.
@1ringochris Maybe I did. I've cooled down since. Its old already from the Eastern Side of KS which I have lived myself. I would have undertsood completely if it had just been the trailer park that he grew up in, thats real, when you go around a town and take additional pics to show just the side u would like to show it changes things to me. I do think the pics are awesome and Travis is an astounding photographer, I think he did try to make a point w/pics that I disagree w/ and he hasnt owned
I think this is a fine video! The photography and production are great. There isn't a town or city in America that is perfect and I think that this shows that GC isn't perfect either! I actually like that some of the images show how sad things have gotten, they also have some merit of shock value as well. A documentary of some of the deteriorating areas of GC is nothing bad at all, it just brings to light that they exist.

I believe you (@julsfine) might have jumped down the @travisyoungphoto throat a little too much on your comments here. He didn't make a video to showcase the best side of Garden City, but rather its more of an impression of what he remember when he was growing up. I've been to Garden City quite a few times and can say there are place much nicer and worst off from what he's showed in his art.
I thought this was a really great video. I think you were just documenting a specific culture that Garden City has to offer. I didn't think you were telling me how bad of a city it is. Keep up the good work, Travis.
BTW I never reported this as abusive to let you know. I dont agree with it but would never try to stop you or anyone from expressing themselves. I just wanted to give you my feelings on the issue, and I even shared it on my facebook page so that others could hopefully add to the discussion. I think my biggest problem with your vid is it doesnt show all sides which makes it have an agenda plain and simple. Who ever did mark this as abusive is misquided and I'm sincerely sorry that they did.
And in your 18 yrs you only saw "dirty" you have chosen to see what you see then. I lived here the 1st 18yrs of my life then moved away and then moved back and have lived here an additional 5+ yrs...I am not a wonderfully gifted photographer like yourself...but I would think a photographer would be able to open his eyes at least as well as I can. Get over yourself...Lawrence isnt Paris either and bottom line your video was meant to be a commentary on this town and not a good one.
you were simply taking photos that pick and chose a narrative that fits how you feel about my town. I lived in Topeka, Overland Park/KCKS area, Colby KS, and I have traveled all across the USA...and all towns could be portrayed in poor light if thats how you want them to look that how they will look. you purposely portrayed only the negative (what you see as negative) about my town. I guess your opening BS speech at the begining is what sets the tone for your pictoral.
This video is amazing and beautifully done but I am sorry to say that it is the most melodramatic beautifully wrapped piece of bullsh*t I have seen in quite some time. I grew up here and am still living here, everyone knows about the trailers the packing plants that bring in cheap labor and our "gang" prob.. is laughable our so called gangs are a joke and everyone knows that too. I think you should be ashamed, this vid has agenda written all over it is simply fantastic propaganda on your part
@julsfine hey, sorry you feel that way. I didn't say anything about gangs or cheap labor, or anything.
I have plenty of photos that show the beauty of the place. I love this area just as much as you, I can assure you of that.
I lived there for 18 yrs, took photos of what I saw and that's that.
There's no denying that it can get dirty at times, this is my personal video that rang true to my days as a child, so I apologize if I my life representation doesn't sit in line, I was simply taking photos
Your rash ass comments about having an agenda make no fucking sense. Travis is not a member of the media, and these photos were not shot in terms of being a "fair and balanced" representation of the city. This is an artistic expression of how Travis and countless other members of the community live on a day to day basis. The fact that you wish to supress the artistic expression that showcases the stark reality of many people is appalling.
@julsfine It also shows how much of a low life you are to attack somebody on the basis of their artistic passion. Travis is obviously "opening" his eyes, because these areas of Garden City receive the least representation and coverage. But I guess we can't expect small minded people like yourself understand the difference between social commentary through art and news and media content. Your weak attacks on Travis as a person obviously reflect your own insecurity and lack of character.
You're an idiot, his art is an attempt to bring socio-economic issues to the forefront of our minds. He should not be ashamed for taking pictures of places that exist. Further, his so called "agenda" is mearly the PURPOSE for his art. He MEANT to show things that people don't realize are there. Does that mean that anything done with a purpose is to spread a corrupt agenda? Absolutely not. You should open up your eyes and realize that there is hurt and pain in this city, just like any other.
