  • This is one of my favorite live performances by them.

  • ...so this is what being lost in a psychedelic forest feel like

  • kitties

  • panda bear is so hot.

  • haunting

  • Soon they'll have a comeback. A new album with all four of em' even Deakin. with all the fun noises, guitars, drums and obscure lyrics and vocalizations. Then they'll go on tour and I'll finally be able to go see them. And Deakin Will put his kid up on stage for one of the songs and then I'll reminess about the experience as an old man.

  • if Jim Morrison were alive, he'd be an animal collective fan.

  • @FFScantgetadamnname

The defusing on stage trick by jumping around and speaking in toungs. I agree

  • @FFScantgetadamnname dont bring jim morison pretentious overinflated meaning bullcrap to animal collective videos okay. dont dirty this amazing band. ok thank you very much. dont bother replying.

  • @OdeToNecrophilia

    haha, you're silly

  • @FFScantgetadamnname i was being srs.

  • @FFScantgetadamnname isn't that the highest compliment any musician can aspire to?

  • lol ayahuasca

  • Loch Raven at the beginning

  • noah is so beautiful ahh

  • MEOW!!!

    Kitties!

    XD

  • The beginning is kind of crazy.. but really funny :) hahaha.

    very interesting. great song.

  • Panda Bear=Brian Wilson's lost lovechild

  • lovin geologists tie-dye

  • They're tripping balls for sure. Music alone can't do that shit lol

  • @harrytheblurfan

lol yeah it can. life can make you trip balls if you're cool enough.

  • They are grooving. I have this song stuck in my head, and its not the way you usually have a song stuck in your head. Its completely different. I feel like I'm tapping into something primal everytime.

  • holy fuckn shit! i want 'theres no one' sequence stuck in my head forever. ingenius.

  • how sweet is Panda though right?

  • meowwww kittys

  • I love their stage presence. They always seem like they're in an altered state, not from drugs, but from the music itself. Almost as if they're possessed by their own souls.

  • @KittybellChan oh definitely. there's a distinct ritualistic quality in their music. the use of chants, calls, repetition...one of the more ritualistic bands i've ever seen...very transcendent

  • Why does he look like such an asshole? :(

  • @calvinandhodge who looks like an asshole?

  • @calvinandhodge ?? he looks like the fucking king to me

  • dang, i reallllly want to see them do an acoustic set with real percussion for like all the song on Sung Tongs....

  • @owlertheprowler

for realz! i'd pay big bucks for that.

  • Fuck i love Avey's freak outs

  • i want geologists shirt

  • panda bear <3

  • drugs.

  • Beautiful :]

  • with proper use, drugs can be a beautiful thing

  • I'm surprised Panda Bear didn't SHIT himself straining that hard just to try and keep up.

  • Love animal collective. Those analog sounds feel like I can jump from a high above rooftop onto them and not get hurt. Pure bliss. I love churros

  • @djdeuce160 i'm pretty sure the majority of this is digital, not analog..

  • excitable crowd....

  • they do everything to a T from merriweather because its all electronic, not that its bad, but yeah dey good yo

  • I really wish that they would do this song live more like they do the album version, like they're so good at doing merriweather post pavillion songs to the T and they're so bad at this song, which is like one of my favorites

  • Who cares if they do drugs or not, it's really nobodys business but their own. They make beautiful music, that's all I need to know or care about. If you choose to listen to them stoned or not it's beautiful either way.

  • I love how people still actually question if they do drugs. I dunno if they still do, I mean if they do it's probably nothing serious. Avey even says "I let some hash relax me" in On A Highway. They have admitted to doing drugs though never really during recording or performing. Although Noah had that stint circa feels era in Europe where he wore a blond wig, took pain killers, and called himself Edgar.

  • @TheLeakySon did noah really take pain killers and call himself edgar? where'd u get that from? ive seen pictures of the whig but i didnt know about all that haha. Oh and yeah in an old interview Avey mentioned drugs having a slight impact on their music but not a huge one.

  • deakin yo mouth. just kidding. sorry.

  • deakin is filming this?

  • The Purple Bottle is a love song the lyrics are metaphors for love

  • "Crush high then i go and take some pills

Cause i cant do all of my dos and still feel ill

    You get that whooooooo"

  • @samtheman411 No Mr. MORON Brothersport is about how he has to console his brother after his fathers death.

  • alas i admit defeat wallawalla. hopefully you are also not suggesting that animal collective does not take drugs tho

  • they obviously do drugs my friend.

  • Animal Collective is amazing, thats all there is.

  • You know they don't do drugs right? Not that there's anything wrong with that, they have however stated they don't

  • noah is such a gorgeous person ♥.

as well as avey but he looks like he's having anuerisms here lol

  • geologist is the coolest

  • very true. he's like ed o'brien in radiohead; not necessarily the one up front, but without him the band would be so much more empty sounding.

  • i love them

  • I still can't beleive Noah is 30.

  • yeah, is he older than dave and brian?

  • yeah, he's a year older than them, i think.

  • Do you mean he doesn't look 30, or do you mean you remember him being younger...? I'm confused.

  • Too young to remember him being younger, so I'm gonna have to go with the former.

  • there's no one to say meow, kitties.

  • hahaha true that

  • I have heard this song live and it was one of the most amazing things ever :)

  • if you were referring to their lollapalooza performance then I second that. I nearly lost it when i heard it start.

  • vocals arent loud enough... the recorded version is amazing , one of my favorites , because the vocals are loud and its so powerfull. this is more dumbed down in that sense , and isnt as great :\

but hey , not everything is good live. doesnt mean the song is bad if it sounds bad live :)

  • i am sure it sounded much better at the actual concert quite a bit because i thought that way about a lot of the live versions of their new stuff but when i saw them live all the levels were great and so powerful although they didn't play leaf house unfortunatley, i really do think the video distorts it

  • 100% true

  • it could likely just be the fact that it is reproduced here in shitty format. I've seen AC live twice and the vocals were amazing.

  • this song's fucking great. i prefer the "sung tons" version (i love that guitar) but this one is more "tribal"

  • 3:35 strikes me as fucking brilliant vocal plays. the harmonies noah and avey get towards the ends are just beautiful. it's like a tribute to the original studio version.

  • I like this, but the guitar accompanying it on Sung Tongs is much, much better, and better suits the feling.

  • The crowd here sucks a lot.

  • Hipsters

  • Comment removed

  • i'm sorry but with just samples and no instruments, this version is just boring. ive seen them live, and i think they are one of the best if ever seen. but this is Just empty. Most Collective fans defend them no matter what, but you can't get into this in particular as a live show..

  • It seems so tribal when they play live sometimes.

  • I swear I've heard people say that they suck live...

    What blind idiots they are.

  • probably because they only watch them on youtube

  • I've just seen them on youtube( I just discovered them last night) and I think they are fuckin amazing :)

  • go see them live bud

  • Are you someone who thinks they are good live or are not?

  • they're incredible live man

  • Agreed

  • these guys are the best, i remember when i first discovered them, it was like a sound i never heard before, glad to see you enjoyed it as much as i did my first time, glad your ac virginity was taken, haha, you should see them live they are even more amazing

  • is there a specific reason avey wears those kinds of hats, or does he just like them?

  • im pretty sure he has a rare disease that forces him to wear short-brimmed caps. it's becoming an epidemic.

  • epidemics arent rare

  • @FrimFrim92 my girlfriend has the disease too!

  • he's got an afro without it.

  • Noah Lennox=musical genius

  • geologist=sound master

  • Honestly, who gives a fuck if they take drugs. They make the music they make from some state of mind, enhanced or dehanced or what ever you want it to be by drugs, whether they are or not. If you believe they take drugs, than they do, if you beleive they dont, then they dont.

  • well they have experimented with naturals in the past, they create music now w/o it

  • and another thing.......would this even make a difference if instead of white men that made up animal collective it was men from india, tibet, africa, or the amazon jungle?? animal collective are just using other methods to make rhythms and express themselves. I don't believe for a second they are stoned. How bout they are just talented.

    GAWD.

  • i don't understand why people always say they get high listening to animal collective. I've never tried a drug in a my life yet i can completely listen to it appreciate it, just as anyone can fully appreciate classical music or tribal/world music.

  • Amen.

  • i understand it, because its fun

i love there music equally if im high or not

but its fun to get high and listen to music you love

  • i don't do any drugs at all and animal collective is one of my favorite bands.

  • cool

i do many drugs and animal collective is one of my favorite bands.

  • you salty nigger barn

    whats your lampshade betsy stephanie

you DONT HAVE to be stoned its just way better

how much are you willing to bet ac is stoned 75 percent of the time its not a matter of wrong and write

I like being stoned when i listen to them cause it just paints more a picture, stop being overcritical indie puppies. the bowl in your food is stale

  • You don't have to be stoned to listen to this, but that's the same as saying you don't have to marinade your steak to eat it.

  • Starting at 3:42, Avey looks drugged out of his mind.

  • you moron, you don't have to be stoned to listen to anything. it's just a pathetic excuse for not being able to understand anything remotely abstract. SQUARE!

  • Stop hating and start loving, you guys.

  • If you think being stoned makes their music interesting try tripping and listening to them. You'll see that what they're doing goes beyond a mind-altering substance.

  • im so gonna try that....

  • this crowd sucks balls

  • Hahhha, Avey's such a freak.

  • it seems like the greatest art always has the most haters

  • this is genius. i sincerely mean that too. can't get enough of this

  • it's "GRIDS" not G/A/I/D/S

  • animal collective is my fav band

  • so are you just looking up every animal collective video and writing something about them having aids or you catching aids? this is the third time ive seen this in 5 minutes, grow the fuck up

  • who cares how it was made... expressive and 'real' is good enough for me. thats music.

  • "expressive and 'real' is good enough for me"

you, my friend, are the man with the plan ^____^

  • You just don't understand them. If you don't think this has a purpose, you really don't understand them or modern music. Congratulations on being behind the curve.

  • You ever gotten high?

  • AC is a band i feel like you can either love or hate. It's hard to just "jump" into them, since every album is pretty different in comparison. And i enjoy them not based on how complex or not complex they are but on how original they sound; something interesting which you shouldn't take too seriously, since its not their "words you should follow, its your insight".

  • awesome

  • this midi festival got me into me into AC...ill never for get those brick walls....love them

  • best ac song in the world

  • I just don't understand this

  • its music that you can fell....its not distracting beats that hide the fact that there is nothing behind the music; like all of popular music, it is real, true, expressive, music.

  • this is also more complex and brilliant than most mainstream music. you might listen to the studio version and see if you "understand" it then.

  • Personally, I think you think too highly of this performance. It's not exactly a brilliant or complex what they're doing. Instead of doing their rhythms and pitches with instruments, they're doing it with their voice over a simplistic voice. The reason you're calling it complex and brilliant is because they're making sounds in ways that is not necessarily easy to listen to, thus making it not mainstream. It has nothing to do with the actual musicianship of the band.

  • whether you think its complex or not, its still more creative than anything else out right now. nothing sounds like this. and using samples and electronics instead of the plain old guitar and drums. i cant see how you think this is simplistic compared to any other band out there..

  • Their music is, at first, terrible.

I know I hated them at first listen. The music part of your brain works by finding repetition in sounds. Animal Collective uses very subtle repetition. Also, sometimes the notes are hard to follow from the heavy amounts of editing the band notoriously adds.

You might not like them now, but give them a few more listens.

Remember how I said I hated them at first?

    They're my favorite band ever.

  • yer same with me, i hate hate hated them when my sister kept playing me "bees" or "grass" but then i watched the music video for this song and as much as i hated them at first the song just stuck in my head.

id love to see them somewhere like this.

  • same here. it was actually the studio version of this that i first heard by them and i found it (and i believe these to be my exact words) "so weird, it's unlistenable". then i heard Fireworks from the Strawberry Jam LP and decided to give them another go.

and thus, my mind has been expanded and i suddenly saw the genius ^___^

  • Interesting, the first time I heard Leaf House, it was in the next room, and it was the first song to make me physically walk into the next room and say Who is this? First song I ever heard of theirs and have been hooked since.

  • Very graet song... I love it!!!

  • Good version.

  • Geo looks like a dancing insect

  • Interesting reinterpretation of Leaf House. I love the original but this version is pretty good, especially near the end, the "no one" part is pure magic. It's nice to see Avey and Panda sharing vocals again. The back and forth with their voices is magic.

  • this performance blew me away

  • ahhh WHO CARES. animal collective is about making noises that are beautiful, that are feelings, that are everything that they are. if you don't think it sounds right, don't listen to it!

i feel like no one else can make those progression of sounds, and it's absolutely beautiful!

  • tell me near the beginning it doesn't sound like Panda's saying "FUCK!" a few times.

  • you just have to understand how difficult it is to use one of those interfaces. It's not like using a normal keyboard. They're really difficult to master. I hate it when people regard electronic music as being easy.

I love Animal Collective. Not one moment when listening to any of their songs have I thought that I'm wasting my time.

  • its not that hard to use its just a sampler. i have the same one panda uses.. but its just as difficult as writing any song

  • That's not what I mean. What I mean is manipulating the waves and using the different filters and stuff, like on 'Fireworks' or 'Peacebone' or something. I think Strawberry Jam has much more of an emphasis on electronics than any other album they've written.

  • what does panda use?

  • SP 303s

  • he used to use 303s now he has a sp 555

  • Hmm, i think they should lean away from the electronic instruments. I think it would sound better without them. Is that an electronic drum beat?!

  • you realize that animal collective is built around the use of electronic instruments, right?

i kind of this it's the point; to fuck around and sound weird, and alienate people who aren't open minded enough to realize that terms like "better" are subjective beyond belief.

i think they're doing a pretty good job, myself.

  • Indie is a pretty nondescript tag for music in general. It doesn't describe the sound at all. I find it pretty useless as a genre...

  • haha, why do people think this is 'indie'? animal colletive is undefined, but it is pure genious!

  • Because they've historically only been signed to independent record labels and released their music independently and "indie" as a stylistic term has always encompassed avant-garde popular music. Idiot...

  • Waaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

  • yeah, im an idiot for having a opnion. niiiiice.

  • no, he's saying idiot because you said something dumb.

  • AC are such a superb band.

  • I don´t know...

  • My favorite band.

  • why?

  • This is good..

  • 4AD rulez:)

  • Such a great band!!

  • Animal Collective-Leaf House "live at Midi festival " Fr 2

  • we all know that movies are SO realistic

  • the word "indie" is the lamest excuse of a genre i have ever heard.

  • so true. i hate it when people expect things to sound a certain way because they think that it's "indie" and it has all of these boundaries that it's supposed to follow
