Gold and silver won't be worth keeping but it will still have a place. It will be the least needed but highly portable and near unconsumable. In situations where one has an abundance of something that is perishable or is a burdon to carry and there is nothing else to trade a deal will be made in gold or silver. It will be worth little but will find it's way back to those that have plenty. With it's low melting point and lack of tarnish it will have some use in smelting. Silver/lead solder.

Nevertheless, the value those commodities hold is just within a monetary system. They are valuable because they're rare, just like the precious stones (well, diamonds actually have some industrial application, silver too). A valuable good is the one that produces other goods, like land. Only 10% of the gold is industrially used.

Manufacturing know how is something important to bring back the economy. You want the machine tooling in place. You also want people that have the mental know to use that tooling. Start learning on small machines. You can get a set up for $3000. Make gun parts. Make part to make bullets. Make some rockets. Make some equipment to make explosives. Look at how thing are made in production plants. Develop a technical know how. Look at everything and ask how is it produced n can I make it.

@datzfast It all depends on how bad things get. People are dependant on energy/fuel and food, when times get tough these things will get expensive. Self sufficiency on land would be one solution but if things get real bad the masses are what you need to be afraid of, therefore being remote from the plague of pillage is best. A like minded supportive community would be ideal as you can't do all yourself. Some gold and silver may be handy in small amounts to barter for the things you need.

Gardening skills and dealing with pests without modern chemicals, the skills of preserving, canning and drying need to be learnt. This is along my line of thinking as well. I bought an acre of land on the edge of town. It's hiking distance to a fishable lake and a river. The land I own is farmable. I've got fishing and hunting supplies. There are wild deer here and varmint. I got into bow hunting as ammo may eventually run out? Who knows. I have a 6 mth supply of food on hand. Lots of bleach and enough multivitamins to last me 3 years. If you plan to farm, be sure to buy heirloom seeds only. Good luck everyone. God bless.

The Chinese and Indian and Russian need for electronics is growing very fast. Gold is used as cable ends and other components is what I was told. Gold and silver won't be worth keeping but it will still have a place. It will be the least needed but highly portable and near unconsumable. In situations where one has an abundance of something that is perishable or is a burdon to carry and there is nothing else to trade a deal will be made in gold or silver. It will be worth little but will find it's way back to those that have plenty. With it's low melting point and lack of tarnish it will have some use in smelting. Silver/lead solder.

Nevertheless, the value those commodities hold is just within a monetary system. They are valuable because they're rare, just like the precious stones (well, diamonds actually have some industrial application, silver too). A valuable good is the one that produces other goods, like land. Only 10% of the gold is industrially used.

This is along my line of thinking as well. I bought an acre of land on the edge of town. It's hiking distance to a fishable lake and a river. The land I own is farmable. I've got fishing and hunting supplies. There are wild deer here and varmint. I got into bow hunting as ammo may eventually run out? Who knows. I have a 6 mth supply of food on hand. i completely agree with you that farmland is the best investment, even if you look at stocks in farm land it surpasses gold and silver by hundreds of percentage points and the most important fact of all it can save your life and your families life as well. The Chinese and Indian and Russian need for electronics is growing very fast. Gold is used as cable ends and other components is what I was told. So it will for sure stabelize for a while until Gold is no longer considered a need in electronics. then it will probably drop to what it was 10 years ago.

i think when things fall, history will repeat itself. perfect example is Europe after the fall of western roman empire. bands of 'warlords' fighting for land, families caught in the crossfires while trying to farm and harvest to survive. famine, diseases, crime on massive scales, possibly even an invasion from another country, like the Muslims invasion or the invasion of the vikings, all just examples of what happened to Europe in the dark ages.

One more thing, Gold is the only thing which has truly crossed cultural boundaries and continents while still being able to be a form of exchange. Well, that is without government mandates of our fiat Dollar Bill. As such gold can be used as a form of exchange almost anywhere you go. The more rare it is in any given area the more value it has as well.

Either way the idea that because there are no jobs does not mean that people will not work and need a viable currency to pay in exchange for that labor. I agree with you except about gold and silver not keeping value. Here is why, because even though the jobs will go there will always be a need for economic exchange. For instance, I need help with my fence my neighbor wants potatoes and I have rice to exchange. With a form of exchange (chiefly it has been gold for several thousands of years) I can get his help with my fence and he can get his potatoes.
