I guess we are on opposite poles... You recover data and we destroy it :-)) One thing is for sure, after the shredder... there is no possibility to recover any data.
Formating is not a proper data security method. Formatting will not destroy customer data. We have a data security overwriting software called EBAN that we use on customer accounts that allow us to remarket their equipment. EBAN has been approved by the Government of Canada for their internal wiping software. If the hard drives are obsolete/defective or the customer account does not allow remarketing, all hard drives get shredded. The goal is to protect the customer's data at all costs.
I thought all the hard drives were sent to Asian and African countries. I was watching a PBS special on this. People in those countries then steal all the information on them.
Unfortunately, there are still companies that pose as being green and promiss to recycle what they receive, but just end up filling containers and shipping overseas because of the monetary return, not thinking about the health and safety of the people receiving the e-waste in the other countries, not to mention the environmental issues e-waste dumping causes. At GEEP, we recycle all e-waste received at our recycling plants down the the raw materials.
At GEEP, we put all efforts into reusing technologies whenever possible, obviously data security is the most important factor to be considered. If our client accounts allow us to credit them remarketing values and their equipment still has value, we will not shred the hard drives but rather use our Government approved data cleansing software, EBAN, to wipe the data clean and allow the equipment to be safely sold back into the secondary markets, or donated to their selected charity.
what's the sense of shredding the hard drive if they all ready took out the disk. You can tell that there is no disk in those empty hard drive case. And you can hear it, empty sound.
Right so if I wanted to get my hardrive destroyed and i came to you would you be able to guarantee nobody would be able to get my creditcard no.s, sortcode, i.e cache, cp folder ect.
Absolutely, we actually have two options: 1) where we will wipe the information clean using our data security software EBAN to guarantee that all data is removed and credit you the remarketable value, or 2) shred the hard drive which will also guarantee 100% data security... Peace of Mind.
Actually, DBAN is the shareware version of EBAN which is what we use to wipe our client account drives that require data security services. GEEP has the right to EBAN, the enterprise version of DBAN. We use EBAN on all drives that are not obsolete, and only use the shredder option for those that require it.
At my old job at a Data Destruction Warehouse I would get to use one of these in conjunction with a drill press or, as a last resort, a 5 lb hammer. I miss it :(
No, all these drives come from Fortune 500+ accounts, and they do not want their data to find its way back into the secondary markets. Our responsibility is to make sure that their data never seen again by anyone else.... 100% peace of mind.
The shredding is but just the first process, GEEP separates all of this material into 99.9% + pure raw materials which then get sold to international recycling markets.
We agree with you 100%, however ultimately it is the client that decides. If the client decides that we must shred, then we shred. If not, then we always encourage reuse and credit the reuse value back to the clients or suggest donation as a method of reusing their equipment.
I can't look away. I don't know why this video is so entertaining. 5 stars; glad to read that these aren't headed to a dump. Recycling is the future, today!
What a waste. There are DoD-approved standards for erasing hard drives using software which makes previous data unrecoverable. This practice of "shredding" hard drives is draconian and wasteful, even if you market it to be "environmentally friendly".
Please see responses to other questions/comments... but to answer, yes we do encourage data wiping using our EBAN software in order to make reuse a possibility.
Yes, 100% true. In fact on the CBC video, after the news clip showing how apparent recyclers were sending their e-waste to Chine, the news clip then showed a company who did it right... GEEP.
We offer 3 levels of data security services (single pass, triple pass and seven times pass) for those customers that return assets with remarketing value and that ultimately agree to such services. For those that specifically do not want their data bearing assets returned onto the secondary markets, we provide 100% assured data destruction via our shredding services. The end result shred is then 100% recycled.
Unfortunately, we do not operate a processing center in Portland, Maine at this point.
Our processing centers are located in CANADA: MONTREAL,QC; MISSISSAUGA,ON; BARRIE,ON; CALGARY,AB; EDMONTON,AB; VANCOUVER,BC; in USA: RALEIGH-DURHAM,NC; DETROIT,MI; DALLAS,TX; in CENTRAL AMERICA: COSTA RICA.
We also have a program in Canada where 30 Sony stores and repair centers are used as collection points where customers can drop off products.
Does your software erase the P and G lists which contain addresses to dead sectors/tracks? As these are not readable and therefore the data would still be retained in that sector and the head would simply miss them.
Our data security software, EBAN, will report on all bad sectors of a drive that it is overwriting. All drives that have bad sectors reported get shredded. EBAN is a Government approved wiping software.
Once the hard drives are shredded at one of our facilities, they are put through a further shredding and sorting process to separate the ferrous from the non-ferrous components resulting in a program that is not only 100% data security oriented but also 100% ecologically oriented.
Actually, at GEEP, every single bit of shredded hard drive is recycled and the raw commodities (mainly Al and some PM) are all recycled).

Got a better way to deal with old drives. Check the video titled "Data Cleansing." I'd post a link but I guess that's not allowed.

The best way to recycle hard drives is by sending them back and reuse the casings for new drives IMO. They call it 'refurbished'.
