You may be OK with first couple of flights. One trick is to setup the plane with a slight left rudder and down elevator. That way if you get out of range it will tend to circle back down.
I rememeber that I could get around 3 - 4 flights out of one charge (the last 2 flights at lower altitudes).
My rule of thumb is that the higher you go the more reliable equipment you should have.
Well done, can't wait to upgrade my WD4 to brushless! Did you reach 2000 feet with the stock Tx? I didn't know the range was that good

I wouldn't go that high with the stock radio. The AA batteries lose power quickly therefore reducing your range.
I use a Hitec Optic 6 with a high capacity battery. I get about 5 hours of flying time with one charge.
