You hardly see a commentator in todays boxing game this enthusiastic and genuinely excited. There will NEVER be an era of boxing that can compare with the 70's/80's!
I do hope you're not using the Tyson comparison to support your argument, because it certainly doesn't.You can attempt to justify Duran quitting all you want, but insisting that his disgraceful quitting was simply due to not wanting to "share a ring with the bitch" makes you look like the apologist that I suspected you were.A bitch is a man who takes the easy way out, quits and makes excuses afterwards rather than attempting to overcome adversity.
@tapiaassasin - Duran stunk the joint out, that doesn't make Rays performance anymore inspiring. Leonard was an A-1 pick who wanted an immediate rematch but made Duran and Hearns wait 8 years for deserved fights. Your description of a bitch fits Ray to a tee, Quit against the legendary Camacho and then had the nerve to make excuses for it. Duran kicked Rays ass in the only one of their fights that mattered.
Considering Leonard was retired for virtually most of those 8 years based on an eye injury,he wasn't in a position to be forcing anybody to wait - not least a quitter who disgraced himself and didn't deserve a third fight at that point.Your idol is notorious for excuses,so I wouldnt bother criticizing leonard for making them. And no,apart from getting slapped around,Leonard did not quit against camacho - he never had a quitters mentality...unlike some.
And yes,we get it...any fight that duran loses doesnt matter as he was either not motivated, didnt train or had aids on the morning of the fight - its the usual stuff with the duran fanboys. And if we're limiting which fights are important and which one's are not,we can see that.against the best fighters he ever fought,Duran's record reads as an outstanding 1-5
@tapiaassasin - Duran fanboys huh? That shows what a novice you are, Duran doesn't need any fanboys, he's recognized by real boxing experts as a true atg. Leonard is also an atg but that doesn't make him any less an asshole.Leonards "retirements" were a farce, he thought he'd punish everybody by not fighting. If Rays lips were moving, he was lying.
Duran doesn't need them, but he certainly has them - as does any famous personality. You've criticized Leonard for being a bitch, for making excuses, now for being an asshole - you obviously fail(or simply refuse to acknowledge) to see the irony in that Duran is even more guilty of these accusations than Leonard
No,I'm not, because I can acknowledge and highlight flaws about those who I like; people like you,as this discussion has shown, are simply incapable of doing the same. It's your own time you've wasted, and you've done a superb job in exposing yourself along the way too.
@emiljose15 you are the fool.... fuck you ... how about duran versus iran barkley... barkley is about 6'2... and duran is about 5'7... is that makes sense...
Two great champions at their peak. In the second fight, Duran was out of shape (his own fault) while Leonard took it serious and displayed beautiful boxing skills.
pacman is a overhype shit that all believes that they destroyed future hall of famers, like mosley and dela hoya but the truth is he's always making excuse of the catchweights so that he's rivals could be weight drain and could be expose ... Pacman is great in his featherweight fights but in the welterweights his not that great as what you all think, he can't even face paul williams when williams called him many times in welterweight, arum even excused that it's a very big mis match,
@skyrider17 lol i agree but paul williams in all honesty should probably be a middleweight. if pacquiao fought him there would be over a six inch height differential. massive reach differential as well.
@skyrider17 pacman shld be considered as a featherweight, which is really is and its an achievement for such a small guy to move up weights like tht but he shld be considered one of the great featherweights
Easily the best fight of all time. 2 legends at peak power absolutely no running, dancing or excuses. Just a Brawl in Montreal. Never seen a fight since to beat this one although Hagler vs. Hearns was also an epic.
3rd fight...Watch the 6th round...Ray is getting sepration using his quick feet and nailing Duran......That's how the 8th round of the 2nd fight was beginning to look like
No excuse for age cause Duran beat Barkley.
WATCH round 8 before Duran quits....Ray aint running. His confidence is building and finding the range....Duran knew it and quit like a girl
Bottom line is...Ray beat Hearns while Duran Lost...Ray beat Benitez while Duran lost...Ray beat Hagler..Duran lost.
2nd fight when Duran did get close he got nailed with counterpunches off the ropes..
First fight Duran started strong and Ray finished strong...Check the scorecards. Also backing someone up doesnt mean you are landing. 2nd half of the first fight Ray is landing the more solid punches from round 8 thru 15
BODY SHOTS count and when Duran got Ray on the ropes Ray was coming back with body shots.
Its obvious you didnt watch the 8th round of the 2nd fight because just before Duran quit Ray was beginning to open up and find the range. Any fighter with great speed, quick feet, reflexes who fights chest to chest is a DUMB FIGHTER...Dont blame Ray for having speed. Thats like telling Michael Jorday...hey you got a 45 inch vertical...dont use it...Thats DUMB
First fight...Freddie Pachecko had it even after 14 rounds...Ray won the 15th...Also Judges only had Duran up 1 point
Its obvious some ppl did not watch prime Ray Leonard. His prime was not the Hagler fight. He was only about 50% of his former self in that fight and coming off a 5 year layoff.
147 pound Ray Leonard 1978-1982 fought majority of his fights flat footed and went for the knockout. Benitez, Ayub Kalule, Larry Bonds, Bruce Finch, Davey Boy Green, Andy Price, Pete Ramzay
Ray was the aggressor and looking for the KO. He tried to knock Benitez out EARLY
All Ray had to do was back up and use seperation and his reach and counter. He made the mistake fighting chest to chest. As a taller fighter with the reach you want to get proper seperation and counter when they charge in.
Watch the 8th round of the 2nd fight when Ray begins to settle down. He is in front of Duran but using his reach with the jab, keeping seperation so that he can get his shots off counterpunching. Ray worked on countering in training for the 2nd fight
@bscottdp- lmao... yeah, Ray really used "seperation" in the 2nd "fight". Like not coming within 10 ft. of Duran. He fought like a real coward and Duran quit rather than sharing a ring with a genuine clown. Anybody who thinks Leonards performance in the 2nd Duran fight was great boxing is delusional. A prime Leonard couldn't wipe a prime Durans ass, and Ray knows this.
When you're throwing around terms like "coward",make sure it isn't in relation to demeaning one of Duran's opponents, especially in regards to a fight in which Duran succeeded in shattering his image and drawing widespread criticism for his perceived "cowardice".
Duran quit because he knew he didn't have a hope in hell of winning and because he didnt want to risk getting hurt in doing so - his words, not mine.
@tapiaassasin - Let me guess... Tyson started eating Evander because he was getting head butted, right? Leonard fought like a bitch in the rematch. Duran refused to share a ring with the bitch. If you think Leonards performance was anything near great then you need to stick to being a hitman.
Ray Leonard was a hall of fame prick. One of the phoniest athletes ever, if Rays lips were moving, he was lying. A great fighter but not near as great as Duran.
I'll say one thing for SRL, he did have a helluva chin... I tell you, if he had fought like this all time..., he might not've beat hearns and hagler, but I would have respected him more. This is probably the only time I think you could really call SRL a "fighter" and not just a slick boxer with great speed and footwork. (and clearly SRL cares more about whether some noname asshole respects him, versus his record... hahahahaha) oh well, he does give me someone to hate on!!! hahaha, sorry SRL...
Its tough, cos its so subjective and all. Plus, quality of oppisition/did they fight the man in his prime, etc... but I think leonard got lucky a lot and he didn't really fight after 82, he was 4-2-1. After 82 and he shoulda been 3-3-1 hearns beat him in 89 and hagler drew w/ him in 87. That's why I think he's overrated, if hearns had a better chin, it wouldn't have been a contest between him and srl, it would've just been an ass drubbing (opinion... can u tell I don't like srl? Hahahaha)
im in mid 20's.. can i ask who is the top 4 welterweight of the 80's between duran, leonard, hearns and hagler.. who is (in your opinion) the no.1 , 2, 3, 4 and why?(brief reason).. comment please.. thank you
Duran and Leonard at their prime would murder Mayweather and Pacquiao with ease!
LOL! This two cherry picker (Maywether and Pacquiao) would never in their life step in the ring with Leonard or Duran.Infact they are such a cowards that they are afraid of Sergio Martinez and instead they will fight next a mediocre quitter like Ortiz and an old bloated welterweight like Marquez! Floyd and Pacquiao with their cherry picking are the reason why boxing is dying!
You fucking pussies who can't eat fucking doughnuts with your fat, keyboard warrior asses for 8 rounds need to shut the fuck up! You fucking homos would not make direct eye contact with Leonard or Duran yet you claim to be such tough guys. I am a pro boxer by the way you fucking cowards. You would never have the skills, balls, or courage to step foot in a boxing ring so stop fronting. Go back to eating doughnuts and beating it to she male porn at your mom's house pussies!
@IAmBoxing Oh come on. Im a fan of boxing but you can't say that. Boxing is only ONE form of fighting in MMA you have many forms you have to deal with, boxing is just 1.
@MMAtx214 inmma they are ok at everthing in boxing they do one thing eceptionaly. both are great but when people say mma fighters have more weapons its not that simple.
no ufc or mma figher could take that many punches to the face and not get knocked out or b bleeding all over the place....these guys are throwing bombs and fought to 15 rounds and barley any blood...true athletes
@IAmBoxing1 true dat, and man i just love seeing the smug leonard beaten, he got lucky twice in his career, he recieved a win over hagler in what should have been a draw, and he recieved a draw in the hearns rematch in what should have been a loss. sugar is 35-4-1.
@eriktito1975 yeah I mean, sugar had to have it all his way ring, gloves, rounds, waiting till 1987, when the fight should've been in 1984 or 85 at the latest. I don't know man, I just... Hagler still made some mistakes though, trying to box orthodox and all. when Sugar hit him w/ that bolo punch low... he should've taken that as his sign to start roughing him up, back alley style. (sorry you hit my balls, yr fair game). Again, Sugar is great, but he's my #4 of the great 80's middleweights.
@eriktito1975 also, the true test... Sugar didn't want a rematch. you know what I mean, if he'd won, and he knew he won, he'd have done it again, I gurantee if hagler won, and leonard lost a close decision, Hagler would've fought him again (o.k. I can't gurantee it, but i'm pretty damn sure about that, you know?)
I also forgot to mention. Duran gave him a gift in the second fight, he let Sugar off the hook in a fight he still could've won (or if leonard only wanted to dance) or at least drawn (and obviously retained the title w/ a draw), plus... 40k in his first fight (whats that 150k today? I wonder how much Israel Vasquez and Rafael Marquez made for their wars that entertained us so much or Castillo v. Corrales?) Hey, not to take away from Leonard, hes a hall of famer 100%, just not my kind of fighter
@IAmBoxing1 I am a fan of boxing to the end, but those guys in mma use 4 ounce gloves, even at heavyweight. it's basically a bare-knuckle fight and you will always see more cuts and knockouts when you cut the amount of padding in the gloves by half
@IAmBoxing1 I am a fan of boxing to the end, but those guys in mma use 4 ounce gloves, even at heavyweight. it's basically a bare-knuckle fight and you will always see more cuts and knockouts when you cut the amount of padding in the gloves by half
@IAmBoxing1 I like Boxing and MMA, but im not a fanboy enough to say something like that.
Seriously, you are way off the mark. You are basically saying that no other fighting style or sport can hold a candle to boxing because of the way boxing rules are set up.
@IAmBoxing1 fights like this and its magnitude happen rarely now...I love boxing, but if we keep getting fighters like Floyd, itll die...no problem with floyd just saying he isnt exciting like gatti, pacman, and all otehr fighters who step or stepped into the ring to entertain win or lose.
@Afro911Man Every sport is different so Boxers loses to MMA Fighters and Kickboxers in MMA and Kickboxing while the MMA Fighters and Kickboxers would of been brutally KTFO in a boxing match. Keywords: THEY ARE ALL DIFFERENT SPORTS and if you're an MMA fan PLEASE don't say a Kickboxer or an MMA fighter would beat a boxer in a boxing match because in one MMA match Tim Sylvia, a former UFC champion attempted to box with a Ray Mercer who's a B- level boxer and still got KO'd in less then 10 seconds.
@Afro911Man and by the way I think all combat sports are great just the way they are but IMO I love boxing more than any other combat sports because I grew up with it and it has the longest and richest histories and great sportsmans such as Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis and Sugar Ray Robinson. I think MMA is a great sport and all but IMO none of the MMA fighters came close to being as big as Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson or even Joe Louis.

you dont get this type of fight and endurance in ufc or mma....this is why no combat sport will ever reign supreme over boxing

@IAmBoxing1 I like Boxing and MMA, but im not a fanboy enough to say something like that.
Seriously, you are way off the mark. You are basically saying that no other fighting style or sport can hold a candle to boxing because of the way boxing rules are set up.
I.e. : You aren't making sense.

@IAmBoxing1 apparently u dont watch mma.. and put these guys in a ring with an mma fighter or even a kickboxer and they wont last 1 round.
