@11:22, that would appear to be of some concern especially if your thumb were to accidentally depress the lock. The solution would be to drill a hole low enough in the thumb release and enable a small pin to be slid through to prevent the engagement.
I thought it was pretty funny seeing Mickey Rorke use one of these as a throwing knife in The Expendables. I love seeing a movie and knowing exactly what kind of blades that they're using even if they're only shown for a split second haha
Cut my left middle finger with the extra large Espada. Pert near bled to death. Still love it though. Just a knife to carefully fondle. Might be useful to slaughter an ox in the field, but havent' had that request yet. The G-10 version might be a good substitute for a machete if you are a sugar cane worker somewhere near the equator. Ain't knives grand?

@DeltaArcher7 No, i've been messin with knives since I was ten, I'm pretty much constantly flipping them. The only time I cut myself with a knife is whenever I was pushing on the knife from my leatherman and it closed on my finger. Lesson learned there.
@nutnfancy I'd recommend a lanyard with a thick fob on it for waving. That is, a monkey's fist or box/cylinder lanyard. I find it interesting you have that one so long...definitely agree with the sewing. Another possibility with a lanyard is it wrapping around your knife and keeping you from opening it (mostly with a small or medium-sized loop lanyard).
I have a friends espada now putting a lanyard on it for him, and holy crap there's no way i cant go pick one up! Just holding it feels so good and the polished look is just outstanding!
I just realized...If you watch the expendables Mickey Rourke pulls a large espada from his ankle holster when he does the knife throwing duel with Jason Stathem. Check it!

i've got the cold steel spartan g-10 handles. and i was wondering how i can get it to open one handed like you did in this vid. cuz it's really stiff, maybe cuz its a lockback but considering how you just opened that large espada one-handed, idk. any ideas on how to make it faster? besides loosening it, cuz that doesnt seem to work either
@richboy806 Cold steel spartan handles are Grivory not G-10
The only way is to open it and close it, a LOT of times. That will make you get better at deploying it, through practice, and will break it in better. (If after 250 opening and closings, its still really bad, you could disassemble it and de bend your spring some, but i wouldnt reccomend it.)
All due respect, but in the case of Ft Hood and other shooting rampages, no knife would have made any difference except the person who tried to be the hero with the knife would have wound up dead.
hey nutnfancy I have a big problem, I ordered an Espada XL and just received it today, but I realised the spring was TOO strong, and I have a hard time compressing it low enough before it disengages the lock. Any suggestions on how to fix this without opening the knife? i'll have a hard time reassembling
Knife looks nice, but i don't see it as very suitable for fighting. The handle is in my opinnion, and to my knowledge, not good for fighting. The risk of loosing this knife in a fight is more than likely. Also, one would defenately not want cord on a fighting knife. I'm not saying this to spread negative energy here. Love your reviews. The Cold Steel "steel tiger" is a exellent knife for fighting, for many reasons. Despite of it's odd looks it's great, and one will not loose it.

I disagree with the conquistador reference, now they may well have carried a similar dagger along with their long & short swords. This knife design looks more like the Sevillian Navaja carried by Spanish Gypsies of the 17th-20th centuries. Look up the Manual De Baratero for illustrations to see for yourself. James Loriega has done lots of work with Spanish blade arts & should provide more details.
@Machster10 AUS8 is a FANTASTIC steel. Depending on who you get it from, I've found the heat treat can be a huge player. I have a SOG Seal Pup Elite I use as a DIVE knife (yessir, AUS8!). My Rajah2 started showing some patina after being carried for the first week, which I attest to the bead blast finish. I soaked it in RemOil over night (as I usually do with most my blades), and haven't seen it since.
As far as STRENGTH... again, I beat the hell out my knives, AUS8 hasn't failed me.
He keeps on about using non-lethal means. Crap. If you are going into a serious fight then by prepared to kill. Don't hold back. You want to kill the perp as fast as possible and with as much violence as possible so that he is incapacitated quickly.

Cold steel made a new espada series, made of the same steel but not highly polished just bead blasted. The newer cheaper ones also come with plain g-10 and no aluminum bolsters or highly stylized g-10. The newer ones are all the same size and are just as durable but are not so "sexy" lookin'. The older models are stil produced but these are more affordable. So if you want this knife but dont have enough $ get the new version.

"Espada" means "sword" in spanish also the design looks like the traditional folding knifes of Toledo and spain, i have seen "navajas" with a blade like a forearm

yo nutn, my espada came today, and this thing is freakin wicked. i got the waved deployment down in 20 min. i did it so much i even pulled my jeans apart at the rivet =( its ok though, owning this blade is worth it. thanks for the review, keep em up, later
I really dig these higher end cold steel demko designs, but the polished look doesn't really do it for me. a black anodized frame, stonewashed/satin blade, with od or flat earth scales would be insane

The newer cheaper ones also come with plain g-10 and no aluminum bolsters or highly stylized g-10. The newer ones are all the same size and are just as durable but are not so "sexy" lookin'. The older models are stil produced but these are more affordable. So if you want this knife but dont have enough $ get the new version.

"Espada" means "sword" in spanish also the design looks like the traditional folding knifes of Toledo and spain, i have seen "navajas" with a blade like a forearm

I just got my espada xl today. Massive blade and fun to handle but the lock back it to damn strong. much harder then the rajah series. Im leaving it in a half open position to break in the lock back. I will probably give it a duracoat job. I love the knife design but its to shiny for me. I have a wicked paint job in mind. WAVE DEPLOYMENT IS THE BEST. auto knife need not apply .

I really dig these higher end cold steel demko designs, but the polished look doesn't really do it for me. a black anodized frame, stonewashed/satin blade, with od or flat earth scales would be insane
