@AdelaideBogan yeah but wasn't that early Scott you're talkin about, when him and Rick teared up Japan, cause he's kind of a bulging drunk guy who can't promo anymore.
Eric you bring up world of sport being technical, im british, use to watch on fight network and ive caught stuff on youtube and im a huge technical fan and it made me sad that the biggest star in the promotions were guys like Big Daddy and giant haystacks were there stars and had near no technical ability like a great khali/mark henry thing in effect.
check out sammy lee in WoS if you havent and you'll see the poor guy being overlooked by fans for big daddy, which makes my heart sink
Not to mention whenever you bring up ECW people automatically think of blood/violence and yet alot of their guys were VERY technical like Perry Saturn, Lance Storm, Jerry Lynn, Shane Douglas and so on.
i felt Dynamite Kid was a phenomenal technical wrestler, but always felt the time in Japan added a strong style approach later in his career. not a bad thing, it did make him a more rounded wrestler in terms of working with different styles
Top 10 Technical Wrestlers Have To Be 1.Kurt Angle 2.AJ Styles 3.Dean Malenko 4.Curt Henning 5.Brett Hart 6.Owen Hart 7.Ricky Steamboat 8.Randy Savage 9.Arn Anderson 10.Tully Blanchard
Is that Daniel Bryan, you know that "nobody" that spent a decade working bingo halls while the "real superstars" were getting training and experience on MTV? (I kid, it's one of those things that make it so easy to hate Michael Cole)
Honestly of the last three or four years worth of indie guys coming to WWE and TNA, Danielson has been my favorite. I don't get much indie stuff here in AR, so seeing them in WWE or TNA is like seeing them for the first time.
Saw a show in the UK a couple of years ago and saw a match between Rob Brookside and Billy Kidman which was done under World of Sport rules. I have to say after watching it that Kidman is a very underated technical wrestler.
What about "Oh yeah" the Macho Man Randy Savage? Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat? "Mr. Wonderful" Paul Orndorff?
I'm sure ya can't stand the guy....but just what are your thoughts on the Ultimate Warrior? the guy sold tickets, merchandise, ppv's, had charisma, an entertaining gimmick, and perhaps the worst wrestling skills, but could build a match.
I don't know how many times, if any, this has been mentioned, but I must say that you guys did a great disservice by not mentioning Curt Hennig. Maybe it was because he wasn't a full on groud and stretch kind of wrestler, but that man was just so incredibly smooth in the ring that his technique really does deserve a special mention. In the ring, he really was Perfect.
Also, another guy who's overlooked is Scott Steiner. Even before he became Big Poppa Pump he was ridiculously strong, but also pretty agile and technically sound.
Chris Benoit was my favourite technical wrestler ever. I remember, as an 8-year-old, watching him and Booker T go at it every week for that third-tier TV Championship on Nitro, and the way their two contrasting styles of wrestling complemented each other in the ring made for some damn-good watching. Right to talk about Ric Flair when you want to talk about wrestlers that have awesome micc skill and tecnical wrestling skill...but what about The Rock?

No one talked about the women wrestlers-Vivian Vachon, Wendi Richter, Mildred Burke, Penny Banner, Madusa, Reggie Bennett, Jackie Sato, Jaguar Yokota, Devil Masami, Bull Nakano, Aja Kong, Lola Gonzalez, etc--to the stars of today like McChif, Sara Del Rey, Daisy Haze, Beth Phoenix--and the list goes on--too bad more wrestling fans do not appreciate how good many women are in the ring--more exciting and of course more attractive than the guys.
I don't really get what they mean by "strong style."
Would they consider RINGs, the various UWF incarnations, Battlarts and such to be "strong style"? Those organizations featured some serious technical wizardry.
@BloodwolfAssassin i agree with you there. i think him, cody rhodes and shelton benjamin are the only ones with amateur backgrounds in wwe so they're among the best technical wrestlers there
Most of the guys in the WWF have amateur wrestling experience in high school or college because WWF actively scouts the top high school and college tournaments for developmental talent. Amateur wrestling does not equate to being a good professional wrestler as few great amateurs have become great professionals because professional wrestling is all about selling, bumping, and doing the job, which top amateurs find hard to do. Most boring technical wrestler was AWA's Steve Regal (NOT WWF's Regal)
where does "pre-maniac"/"pre-(purple) haze" mark lewin?...if any1'seen his earlier matches...i saw a match of his from austrailia in 'the 60s...&...IT ...WAS...AWESOME!!!!!
Soliewrestling is a great channel thats got alot of old school NWA stuff among other 80's classics. And Biscoffamania covers late 80's early 90's WCW extensively and uploads very frequently. I recomend them both.
CM Punk and Eddie Guerrero had a pretty good feud in IWA Mid-South for a bit, some crazy technical skills on display every time they fought. The one with Punk vs Guerrero vs (unmasked) Rey Mysterio in particular is one of the best things I've ever seen, has everything you love about all 3 guys and nothing you usually hate about IWA: MS.
best technical wrestlers for me would be the men at UWFi. there's other greats in the states like the harts, he who must not be named n such. but for truelly technical skill UWFi was unmatched. In particular the IQ Wrestlers Kazushi Sakuraba aka The Gracie Hunter.
lou thez, stu hart, and even nick bockwinkle were great in their day...but, according to classie freddie blassie in his book, he states that he was sure in a shoot, chris benoit would have taken 90 percent of them...and made it a lot less boring to sit thru...its a hard thing to make a comparison of generations..
best technical wrestler is dynamite kid and the two hart brothers chris benoit is good despite what he did i have all the respect for his skills and kurt angle is good too
Ya'll forgot about Ricky The Dragon Steamboat. Ricky's 1992 Bash Blast Iron Man w/ Rick Rude is one the best matches I've seen and does not get the credit it deserves. Its not a spotfeast and every move makes sense. No stale moments and great timing. Check out that match.
best techinical wrestlers ? bret and owen hart chris benoit chris jericho dynamite kid and kurt angle id say william regal is up there at the top also aj styles is a good techinical wrestler man you guys talk crap dean malenko and saturn were great? you guys talk so much shit
A British wrestler particularly worth mentioning is George Kidd. He was two time Lightweight World Champion and held the title for 20 years in 49 defences and retired undefeated. His style was geared towards matt-based wrestling and submission/counter style and he influenced all that followed him.
I'd also put a mention in for Johnny Saint, Jim Breaks, Les Kellet, Mick McManus, Danny-Boy Collins, Jon Cortez, Dynamite Kid and Tony St. Clair.
Thanks! As for the Japanese wrestlers, when I think of those names I rend to think more of 'strong style' than technical, but either way, we WILL be talking about those sort of names on an upcoming show when we talk Puroresu, so stay tuned for that
2 Cold Scorpio is a definitely great technician as well. Though, I thought his high-flying abilities were more to meet the eye. For a guy his size and build, the guy does 450s (Kronus did too, but Scorpio invented it) and twisting 450 legdrops (The Tumbleweed, look it up), Shooting Stars and various top-rope splashes. Then, top it off with great technical wrestling moves and counters. What more could you ask for?
I know I'm going to get a hit for this but HBK was a great wrestler, not just for the high top rope stuff but also for when he went to the mat. Don't get me wrong there are better on the mat guys but for me the best technical wrestler should be one that is a great all round, skill, showmanship as well as off the top rope stuff. After all everything takes an amount of skill to do and I find HBK has a lot of skill in every area.
You're right, he was competent on the mat, but like you said, there are wrestlers better skilled in that area and more proficient at it, hence why he was no mentioned, heh, but thanks for the perspective!
I don't believe technical competency is enough to get by in any display of art. I respect the Hell out of Paul Gilbert, but as a guitarist his tunes don't make me nod my head or give me joy as much as the opening riff from Where Is My Mind?, you know?
Same with wrestlers. I LOVED the Benoit/Angle matches, a lot of R.O.H. guys and ECW Taz, but has it ever been as exciting as some of Taker's matches with him diving over the ropes? I dunno.
I totally agree. Look at 2002 : For all the Benoit/Angle matches, all the TNA X Division matches, all the ROH main events when they were first starting, the match that I was the most emotionally invested in and enjoyed the most? Rock/Hogan. I totally understand where you come from & it just goes to illustrate that there's not one set list of criteria for 1. what gets you over 2. what makes you a good 'worker'
And this is why I'm so glad I fell upon this channel, bringing up the likes of Johnny Saint and Billy Robinson just makes me so happy there is a real non "mark" show on youtube. Keep up the great work guys....You have a loyal fan now.
Chris Jericho....a lot of people see him as just a high flyer but he is very solid in the ring. he wrestled in germany so the catch as catch can style was exposed to him.
As far as one of the worst technical wrestlers I pick Triple H. This guy claims to be the best wrestler today and all the people pop for is his entrance. He hasn't had a great wrestling match in 5 years.
To be fair I've never really thought of Triple H as a true technical wrestler, especially as someone who has consciously modeled so much of his character and in-ring style after a brawler like Harley Race.
More to the point WWE has killed technical wrestling for its audience. WCW had excellent technical matches, but TNA is the only national company where that style is featured even semi-prominently.
@theinfamouscamXXII Hes been calling himself King of Kings since when he won KOTR. Its a nickname the same as Jericho saying hes the best in the world at what he does or Danielson being called the best wrestler in the world. They may be better technical wrestlers but they are still nicknames.
@Sneezlebob What?? He won King Of The Ring in 1997, he didn't start calling himself the 'King Of Kings' until 2007, TEN YEARS LATER. And it was because he was wrestling King Booker at SummerSlam on his comeback match.
@WrestlingRoundtable He did his first King of Kings entrance in 2006 at WM 22. If you just looked at wikipedia it'll say 2007-2009 which I'm assuming is what you did. HHH was calling himself the King of Kings during his time in Evolution because he was the King of the group who kept the world title.
@Sneezlebob Alright, to be fair, I made the mistake of asking a friend & that's what he said. Sounded believable, ha, but he's always fucking wrong so I should learn my lesson sometime ;) I had thought it was towards the end of the Evolution thing but I went on his word(dumb me, ha), but either way my point was it was a long time after the King Of The Ring 1997, heh.
Exactly. Curt Hennig, Yuji Nagata, Dean Malenko, Chris Candido, Rick Martel, or hell even Alex Wright were great technical wrestlers. MY all-time favorites are/were Dynamite Kid, Steamboat, Guerrero, Malenko, Liger , Akiyama, Benoit, McGuinness, Danielson and JOHNNY SAINT (straight chain style)!!!
These guys are all great...2 of my favorites were Kurt Angle and Tazz. Kurt for his NCAA championships, Olympic medals and awesome inring performers. Tazz, great judo and amatuer wrestling backgrounds and a total badass in the ring
Most definitely. Taz (had) and Kurt both has that mat-wrestling technician skill that makes the flow of the match look so realistic. They both perform their matches with great emphasis on suplexes and submissions. I love Taz the most because of the way he incorporated the technical style in the ECW hardcore environment so well. Kurt has a great all-round technical style with his ability to wrestle, brawl and fly with that neat moonsault on some occasions. Great picks!
You hit the nail on the head. It's funny of similar they are in that Tazz's career ended because of his neck problems. Kurt's neck problems will in all likelihood see him retire in another few years. Both Guys if they were younger and healthier could've been great MMA fighters with the legit bases they came from.
i think that some of the best technical and chain wrestling came from eddy and dean in ecw those were classics and that hogan vs muta match in 1993 was like hogan's best match ever
I personally think someone like KENTA (Not Kobashi) or Danielson are the best.
But i guess to be amazing technical wrestler, your opponent has to be a good technical wrestler, all depends on chemistry, hense why the radicalz wrestling eachother in Japan, WCW & ECW was always entertaining, or Kurt v Benoit, Benoit v Guerrero in WWE.
Awesome to hear British wrestling get a big mention. The general standard was so high, even the young guys were amazing at what they did. These guys got over without all of the high-flying too. Other than the Dynamite Kid, only heels usually went for top rope moves as they were illegal.
I agree about Taylor, I don't think I ever saw him do anything noteworthy during his time on SmackDown, he was just... there.
I just finish watching malenko vs. jericho malenko is just incredible add that to the 1004 holds heel gimmick jericho had during the fued the match showed off both of their technical ability without having to end the match with run in or jericho using a weapon it was great
Malenko was great. I saw his match against Eddie Guerrero in their last night in ECW. While not really that technical, the Super J cup was also a showcase of technical/ high flying action.
and sorry i didnt really add much on to return comment, i think your maybe right with kindve ruthless, but maybe not much chain wrestling, i also thought it was intelligent that you guys took the best and worst tecnichal wrestler as good and boring, because if it was just bad wrestlers it would just be like good and bad wrestlers, so thats great! and i thought payne vs mguiness was great, only match ive seen of payne but great!
Thanks for writing back, ill need to check that out about cruiserweights and light heavyweights! i think you guys always have great shows but these last 2 parts have been my fav, you can tell that theres a lot of work that goes into this! i just want to ask what wrestling promotion is the best to watch at the moment? ive been going for tna but sometimes i think its just because deep down i want wcw back! will tna ever be wcw? maybe i should just watch ROH!
Thanks a lot, a lot more work than you know! As for what promotion is the best to watch, I'd say UFC but that's not wrestling ;) ha. Really, nothing appeals to me, but I keep hearing nothing but good things about Smackdown recently. Everyone seems to enjoy the fact that 1. They give TV matches time 2. It features newer main eventers. TNA SHOULD have been the successor to the GOOD WCW years ago, but unfortunately it's been nothing but the opposite.
This show should really suck, the idea of 4 wrestling fans giving their opinion on Wrestling doesn't sound too good and yet the show is always entertaining, funny and compelling and so I want to thank you guys for making such a quality programme. Kudos.
ha, that's the most incredible backhanded compliment we've ever gotten, ha, but thanks very much, I'm glad you enjoy the show. Certainly if you went on the trackrecord of, well, pretty much any other show here on YouTube I guess I could see why you'd assume that, but we work hard to make a quality show, and I'm glad you think so too!
Hey guys, another great show, and a very interesting topic you chose, you named some great technical wrestlers there but i dont think i heard dynamyte kid named? were they any particuler reason? its just when i hear the term technical wrestlers used i usually hear dynamyte kid popping up in my head, just wondring what your thoughts on him were, and again thanks for the show, you guys are awesome cheers!
Thank you very much, and yes, there's a very simple answer for why Dynamite Kid wasn't mentioned, as many commenting have brought up his name(We did mention him in our talk about Cruiserweights/Light Heavyweight Wrestlers, however) ; I consider him more known for his 'strong-style' hybrid style than specifically for technical wrestling. Perhaps that's a wrong assumption and he should have been mentioned, but that was my thinking. He was incredible, for sure. Thank you very much!
Unlike Lesnar, I didn't see Lashley ever utilize his amateur background though. Lashley would do a couple planchas once in a while as well, but generally he seemed more of the typical "big man" powermoves WWE wrestler whereas Lesnar was much more versatile, and better. I wouldn't even put them in the same league in terms of match quality
I don't have much to say about the show, though I did enjoy it. I just wanted to say that it's pretty cool how much time you seem to take to respond to comments and stuff on here. I like to see that.
Thanks you very much. Part of the idea of the show when we started was to make it interactive with the audience ; we wanted to make the audience part of the show too via these means of leaving comments, so we could have a dialog any time. And I also think that if someone's kind enough to not only take the time to watch the show, but take the time to say they enjoyed it, that they at least deserve a thank you. So here's yours :)
Ive gotta say the Greatest technical wrestler without a doubt is The Great Khali, everything he does is just so crisp and well done.......I just came down from my high
Anyway, I think you guys covered it with Hart, Benoit, Angle, Malenko,Shelly (who next to Angle is prolly the best wrestler in TNA), Danielson, Regal, etc.
I havent seen alot of the European wrestlers U mentioned, so I gotta catch up. Great show again guys

Would they consider RINGs, the various UWF incarnations, Battlarts and such to be "strong style"? Those organizations featured some serious technical wizardry.

@BloodwolfAssassin i agree with you there. i think him, cody rhodes and shelton benjamin are the only ones with amateur backgrounds in wwe so they're among the best technical wrestlers there
SCD999 2 years ago
Most of the guys in the WWF have amateur wrestling experience in high school or college because WWF actively scouts the top high school and college tournaments for developmental talent. Amateur wrestling does not equate to being a good professional wrestler as few great amateurs have become great professionals because professional wrestling is all about selling, bumping, and doing the job, which top amateurs find hard to do. Most boring technical wrestler was AWA's Steve Regal (NOT WWF's Regal)

Clair.

2 Cold Scorpio. Good technical wrestler with great highflying skills too.
Very Underrated.
ten410 2 years ago

RavenDarkShade 2 years ago
You're right, he was competent on the mat, but like you said, there are wrestlers better skilled in that area and more proficient at it, hence why he was no mentioned, heh, but thanks for the perspective!

WrestlingRoundtable 2 years ago
I don't believe technical competency is enough to get by in any display of art. I respect the Hell out of Paul Gilbert, but as a guitarist his tunes don't make me nod my head or give me joy as much as the opening riff from Where Is My Mind?, you know?
Same with wrestlers. I LOVED the Benoit/Angle matches, a lot of R.O.H. guys and ECW Taz, but has it ever been as exciting as some of Taker's matches with him diving over the ropes? I dunno.
Great show guys, thanks for the friend invite.
PaidYouOff 2 years ago 2
I totally agree. Look at 2002 : For all the Benoit/Angle matches, all the TNA X Division matches, all the ROH main events when they were first starting, the match that I was the most emotionally invested in and enjoyed the most? Rock/Hogan. I totally understand where you come from & it just goes to illustrate that there's not one set list of criteria for 1. what gets you over 2. what makes you a good 'worker'
Thanks a lot!

As far as one of the worst technical wrestlers I pick Triple H. This guy claims to be the best wrestler today and all the people pop for is his entrance. He hasn't had a great wrestling match in 5 years.
-Rodney, Wrestling Roundtable
leconter 2 years ago 9
To be fair I've never really thought of Triple H as a true technical wrestler, especially as someone who has consciously modeled so much of his character and in-ring style after a brawler like Harley Race.
More to the point WWE has killed technical wrestling for its audience. WCW had excellent technical matches, but TNA is the only national company where that style is featured even semi-prominently.

Sneezlebob 1 year ago
@Sneezlebob What?? He won King Of The Ring in 1997, he didn't start calling himself the 'King Of Kings' until 2007, TEN YEARS LATER. And it was because he was wrestling King Booker at SummerSlam on his comeback match.
-E, Wrestling Roundtable
WrestlingRoundtable 1 year ago
@WrestlingRoundtable He did his first King of Kings entrance in 2006 at WM 22. If you just looked at wikipedia it'll say 2007-2009 which I'm assuming is what you did. HHH was calling himself the King of Kings during his time in Evolution because he was the King of the group who kept the world title.

Another great technical wrestler: Curt Hennig
RoderickStrong 2 years ago 3
Exactly. Curt Hennig, Yuji Nagata, Dean Malenko, Chris Candido, Rick Martel, or hell even Alex Wright were great technical wrestlers. MY all-time favorites are/were Dynamite Kid, Steamboat, Guerrero, Malenko, Liger , Akiyama, Benoit, McGuinness, Danielson and JOHNNY SAINT (straight chain style)!!!
dagreatcapri82 2 years ago
These guys are all great...2 of my favorites were Kurt Angle and Tazz. Kurt for his NCAA championships, Olympic medals and awesome inring performers. Tazz, great judo and amatuer wrestling backgrounds and a total badass in the ring
STEALTH872003 2 years ago
Most definitely. Taz (had) and Kurt both has that mat-wrestling technician skill that makes the flow of the match look so realistic. They both perform their matches with great emphasis on suplexes and submissions. I love Taz the most because of the way he incorporated the technical style in the ECW hardcore environment so well. Kurt has a great all-round technical style with his ability to wrestle, brawl and fly with that neat moonsault on some occasions. Great picks!
dagreatcapri82 2 years ago
You hit the nail on the head. It's funny of similar they are in that Tazz's career ended because of his neck problems. Kurt's neck problems will in all likelihood see him retire in another few years. Both Guys if they were younger and healthier could've been great MMA fighters with the legit bases they came from.
STEALTH872003 2 years ago
i think that some of the best technical and chain wrestling came from eddy and dean in ecw those were classics and that hogan vs muta match in 1993 was like hogan's best match ever

karenwill13 2 years ago
I personally think someone like KENTA (Not Kobashi) or Danielson are the best.
But i guess to be amazing technical wrestler, your opponent has to be a good technical wrestler, all depends on chemistry, hense why the radicalz wrestling eachother in Japan, WCW & ECW was always entertaining, or Kurt v Benoit, Benoit v Guerrero in WWE.
effectsofraven 2 years ago
Awesome to hear British wrestling get a big mention. The general standard was so high, even the young guys were amazing at what they did. These guys got over without all of the high-flying too. Other than the Dynamite Kid, only heels usually went for top rope moves as they were illegal.
I agree about Taylor, I don't think I ever saw him do anything noteworthy during his time on SmackDown, he was just... there.

tgraham25 2 years ago
Thanks a lot, a lot more work than you know! As for what promotion is the best to watch, I'd say UFC but that's not wrestling ;) ha. Really, nothing appeals to me, but I keep hearing nothing but good things about Smackdown recently. Everyone seems to enjoy the fact that 1. They give TV matches time 2. It features newer main eventers. TNA SHOULD have been the successor to the GOOD WCW years ago, but unfortunately it's been nothing but the opposite.

tgraham25 2 years ago
Thank you very much, and yes, there's a very simple answer for why Dynamite Kid wasn't mentioned, as many commenting have brought up his name(We did mention him in our talk about Cruiserweights/Light Heavyweight Wrestlers, however) ; I consider him more known for his 'strong-style' hybrid style than specifically for technical wrestling. Perhaps that's a wrong assumption and he should have been mentioned, but that was my thinking. He was incredible, for sure. Thank you very much!

JukoDDT 2 years ago
Unlike Lesnar, I didn't see Lashley ever utilize his amateur background though. Lashley would do a couple planchas once in a while as well, but generally he seemed more of the typical "big man" powermoves WWE wrestler whereas Lesnar was much more versatile, and better. I wouldn't even put them in the same league in terms of match quality
