  • Oh WOW, twelve dollars?!? Tofutti is maybe 5 dollars here.

  • Oh yeah, vegan "normal food" replacements like veggie burgers and toffuti are all a lot more expensive that "normal food" in America too. It sucks. If a lot more people were vegan and buying it, it would be cheaper.

  • You have to except your family and friends are meattards, and they don't care about or respect your beliefs! They want to see you eat a dead animal so they can feel better about themselves. This makes them feel a victory over you. Good for you for not giving in.

  • YA POR FAVOR PONTE A TRABAJAR CON TU MARIDO EN LA RECONSTRUCCION DE TU PAIS Y DEJATE DE TONTERIAS GUATEMALTECA!!!! VEGANO!!!

  • The cream cheese is usually $3 USD and the Tofurky is about the same. It's expensive over there! But our vegetables are more expensive, too. $10 will get me just a day or two worth of fruit and veggies

  • Try the tofurkey roast, it is amazing. I think the prices are expensive where you live because there aren't as many vegans there.

  • Hey there I like your video blog =^) Where do you live? I am going vegan myself. I've been vegan on and off for a few years but I am going to go 100% vegan by the end of 2010.

You said you want to make shorter video blogs--have you thought of making yourself a script? that would probably do it. It helps me with public speaking events, if i have index cards with the points I want to mention. That way I don't go on and on.

Keep up the good work, and Happy New Year!

  • You don't have to watch if you don't want to. Stop whining.

  • Some people happen to like her videos.. Please don't stop making them porolita :D

  • Your getting married!?!? Congrats Ihavent been following your videos!!!

Wow! Were u live is actually pretty vegan friendly compared to Australia where I live. I cant believe u have tofurky, its supposed to be really good. I think I have actually seen toffutti in a health store.

  • Ohh by the way, $10 or above is definately a rip off for a few slices of articficial turkey or a small container of cream cheese.

  • tofutti!! <3

$11?! geez, yeah, thats way too high, it's like maybe 3 bux in california.

it's sooo good though, enjoy it :)

  • Sad world that we live in..... so many people are ignorant. :(

  • Anyway Porolita as a meat substitute have you try to make seitan at home? It's really cheep and easy! It just takes a little time to do (1hour + 45 minutes coocking) but you just need 3 kg of flour (wich kind or brand it's up to you) and water! ;-) And it's sooo good! I love it

  • I have never tried seitan :) send me the recipe please! :)

  • @porolita22 see if you can find vital wheat gluten at the store! Check out everydaydish.tv for some good seitan recipes using that

  • well you're lucky because here in Italy they don't even sell vegan cream cheese! If we want some we have to make it by our own...and this happens for almost every vegan product... so sad! :-( That's why I'm really looking forward to go to America! 12$ is pretty insane though...

  • Hopefully if more people start buying the Tofutti cream cheese and other vegan products the price will go down...that's ridiculously priced right now!!

  • Tofurkey here is 2.99 a package, LOL! Don't spend 10 bucks on that stuff!!

  • I've been buying the fake-o meats n chz once in a while, but lately I have been learning how to make it all myself. Learning how to make my own vegan soy chz has been awesome. I make pizza for friends now, and most of them can't even tell the difference! Peace, Poro! cya around!

  • Where I live in the U.S., with the Tofurky roast (not the slices), the price varies a little; at Whole Foods, a roast (no gravy) costs $14, but at Trader Joe's, a roast complete with gravy is $10. The Tofurky slices are about $5 anywhere I've seen them, and the Tofutti's Better Than Cream Cheese is around $3. I can't believe how much you're having to pay for that -- and I thought the prices here could be steep at times. It doesn't seem like shipping would add that much.

  • Yeah it sucks they're so expensive, cause they taste good. I'm not gonna be buying them much often. Lucky for me, here in my country, fresh fruits and vegetables are so cheap... I really don't need fake meats or cheeses :)

  • Yeah, I could live without the processed vegan alternatives. Partly the reason I buy them is to show my non-vegan family the vegan options. I try to cook vegan versions of food my family is familiar with, even though I'm happy with stir-fries and curries. I'd love to have my own garden some day & grow my own food. We do have a local Farmers' Market in the summer, so that's good. Nothing better than locally-grown tomatoes instead of the store-bought ones that have virtually no flavor! :)

  • I stay away from pre-made vegan foods like tofurky. It's expensive and can be easily and inexpesively made from scratch. But yeah, you're paying way too much for that. :( Probably about 4 USD here.

  • Hey thanks for all your comments man :)

I actually liked the tofurky, but it kinda gave me a nauseous feeling after I ate it. Maybe it was the spices.

And yeah, it is too much. I won't be buying those stuff any time soon.

  • Yeah, it tastes good, especially when fried with spices and garlic, but cost wise, not so good, lol.

A vegans best friends are pasta, beans, nuts, vegetables and seasonings. Theyre cheap and extremely good for you. And there are so many different ways of cooking them. I eat something different everyday. :-)

An excellent book you should check out is:

Veganomicon: The Ultimate Vegan Cookbook . Works wonders.

  • it is expensive to be a vegan... i will check out how much that is locally... thanks again for your videos!!

    S

  • hm, from where I am, I avoid Tofutti since they have a line of animal-by products, despite the other vegan stuff. Yes, I am strict. hahah

I go for Sheese. When it's on sale, 2 bucks for 255g. Usually 4 bucks.

If going for the hard sheese, it's like 7 bucks.

Ah, good ol' unraw vegan days.

  • For me the Tofutti is around 3-4 and the tofurkey is just a little bit more. That is so expensive out there!!! Wow!!! I got a new camera and my videos are all around 500-600mb and then if I try to compress them the audio disappears...it takes me like 5 hours to upload to youtube even on a "fast" connection. Yikes!!! Also, your holiday experience is much like mine. Everyone is always like "but why not shrimp? eat the fish!" haha, "noooo i dont want to eat it!" ;)

  • Hi,

Here in New Zealand vegan cream cheese costs NZ$4 ,which is about US$6.

  • I pay around 2.50 USD for both of those

  • Tofutti costs me a few bucks. I can't remember exactly how much, but not 11 dollars! Wow.

  • I love the Quinoa pasta! That's the brand I use when I make spaghetti, and it tastes so much more flavorful than white pasta. I'm glad you found some new vegan treats. =) You're right, though; they're usually very expensive compared to whole fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans.

I've had many holiday meals where I've gone hungry, so I feel your pain. Hopefully you ate lots of yummy vegan food when you came home!

  • i believe there are websites online that sell vegan food. i'm not sure about the fridge stuff, but they do have stuff you can keep out of the fridge. you should search online! :D

  • 100 plus megabyte videos? Urgh, I know what you mean... you have a MAC right?

Download a program (its free) called "iSquint"

you can compress any movie file to make it smaller. I use it occasionally, but it makes the video and audio quality decrease a bit...

    well i hope it helps! ^^;

    Great vid!

  • mmmm food :) you paid how much? :-o I've never bought things like tofurkey, I'm guessing they'd be over priced here as well.

  • yeah i'd probably pay $3 or $4 for each of those items you show.... so it seems that they're charging you like... tripple the prices we pay here... suckage.

  • even though i saw it the other night, i'm still impressed by your cell phone lol

  • You are a great person I an a veggie but I know how difficult it is to cope when everyone else eats meat.

  • Holy crap! You spent the amount of half a weeks shopping on some faux deli slices? I'm not suprised tho, I only get my omni substitutes on special occassions (unless I am on a mega junkfood binge) because they are a little overpriced here too, particularly the cheese. Then again, I get three meals (not alone, with other ingredients of course LOL) and a snack out of that packet of cheese, so it is good value :-)

  • porolitaa (suspirooooooo)

  • glad you found your vegan food, i'm hoping to eat more healthy this year myself. :)

  • family akwardness... lol. I brought an apple salad to my husband's family christmas dinner.. which I ate almost the half of it lol.Luckily somebody made a "mole" and rice dish.. so I could eat something besides the salad.. and bread.. and punch.. with wine.. lol

I haven't found tofurkey or toffutti cheese here in Mexico :(, the only thing I found was a yellow-american cheese substitute by boulder, and that's it..

    Anyway, Happy new year Porolita!!

  • Happy New Year to you as well! I can completely relate to the family awkwardness. When I first became a vegetarian, my Mom looked at me like I had six heads. Planning ahead seems to help a lot.

  • do you compress the files? Mac or PC? I might be able to help ya!

Vegan specialty foods are incredibly expensive everywhere! But I try to stay away from them due to how processed they are.

    Tofurky is REALLY GOOD

    Best wishes for '09.

    And the video wasn't too long, don't worry . . .

  • What country are you in?

  • Guatemala, is in Central America.

  • Give it a few years... then they'll get used to it.

  • Yeah we have it different, however I am fortunate that vegetables here are way cheaper than in the U.S.

Cream cheese I can live without, vegetables, not in a million years :)

  • I would be regarded as a Vegan wimp. Altogether between eating out with my wife, or with relatives, its about 28 meals a year. If you count 3 meals a day, I think it comes to 1095 meals. On those 28 meals I eat whatever is put before me and enjoy it. This leaves me performing as a Vegan about 98% of the time. I wish I did this well in other areas of my life. This way, I do not draw attention to myself. :-)

  • Vegan wimp? LOL

I understand what you mean, well everyone goes along the way it best suits them. God bless you Harry!

  • I think the cream cheese is $3 US? Maybe less. All I know that if it was $12, I would nevvvver get that haha.

  • Hey Paola. I totally didn't go to my family get together on christmas. I stayed home and gave up food as sacrifice to the lord for sending his son to die for our sins. So yeah I fasted on christmas day and boxing day.

I was happy I decided not to go either because I am never comfortable anymore seeing people eating meat and in such large amount laying all over the place.

About the food. They look so good, they don't sell any of those in my country (to 2 my knowledge anyway). The cheese looks gd

  • You fasted! Oh well you are right, we should be grateful on this day and remember the true meaning of it :)

    Happy new year Swan! xx

  • Hey Porolita, Happy New Year!!!

Tofurky rocks! It goes for around $3 here in NY but there are other brands that make the same product for a little less.

I know what it's like to deal with the endless "try some of this..." comments at holiday dinners. It's kind of funny when they repeat the question 3 times in a row.

  • I hear you! It sure is annoying, but at least nobody was a jerk about it. Just the ocasional "oh no wonder you're so thin, you don't eat anything" LOL but I have always been this thin, even when I ate whatever junk I found!

  • You paid too much for that stuff girl, lol.

Sorry you didn't get much to eat for christmas. Vegans have to make a lot of sacrifices but it's worth it.

  • You are so right Zonya... it was still ok. I love grapes LOL

  • Morningstar Farms is decent. I think vegetables and fruits are probably more expensive in the USA.

For example, I bought snowpeas for a stirfry the other day which were a lot of money. Since they came from Gautemala, I'm guessing they're much cheaper there. But, in general, veggies seem to cost a lot here. $4 for a small container of raspberries!

  • OMG I pay about US$1.30 for 2 pounds of raspberries :-0

  • Happy New year!

    Good to see you again!:)

  • OMG Paige you're alive :D happy new year!

  • I think the cream cheese is $3 US? Maybe less. All I know that if it was $12, I would nevvvver get that haha.

  • Yeah I don't think I'll be getting it anytime soon lol... it's too much.

  • My holiday was ok, but my daughter and I managed to get a huge cold.

About the food, around here its about half that price, maybe a bit less. We dont have that brand per say where I live in the province of Quebec, but in general, the vegan food I buy is about a third the price you paid for those items. But it varies from one product to the next.

    Happy New Year Porolita!!!

  • Thank you Sandra, I hope you feel better soon! Happy new year to you as well!

  • You are more than welcome sweety. Have a great new year.

  • woa! 10 and 12 dollars..i think those will be maybe 4 or 5 dollars here, i got that kind of fake meat before it was almost 4 dollars

  • I knew I was robbed! LOL

  • lol i love the sound effects
