I remember in the early 80s before NBC got this theme all they had was synthesizer noises and the G-E-C tones. When they played that "music" long enough for the closing credits you got a headache. And not every TV had a remote control back then. They'll never get a better theme than The Mission and with shrinking audience share it's no time to test audience loyalty with an unpopular change. It's here to stay because they had JW re-record it not too long ago. This clip is the original version.

The 80's synth sounds weren't so bad. At least compared to the late 70's high pitched "type-type-type-type-type g-c-d-g-c-d-g-c-d-g-c-d-g-c-d-­(overlaps G-E-C) g-c-d-g-c-d-g-c-d-g-c-d-g-c-d" Looping over. And over. And over. And over. The Seven Network of Australia requested that a composer make a fanfare for their new program and so the tune used by Seven Network is completely owned and remade by them.

The NBC News Theme was written by John Williams....the full length version is called "The Mission"....one of my favorites. I hope NBC keeps this theme for quite some time cause I can't see anything topping it.
