Fact is, fifty different cancer-causing chemicals are used to manufacture solar panels. Examples of these chemicals, include cadmium and arsenic. Without doubt, workers in the solar industry making and disposing solar panels are at highest risk for health issues.
“It’s the other side of this whole clean energy push. Even so-called clean manufacturing uses a lot of nasty chemicals.” – Liz Harriman, deputy director of Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction Institute at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell
Ha, solar panels are NOT green. If you knew the KW hours (which comes from a coal burning plant) it actually takes to produce a solar panle you would ban them!
It's kind of like saying I'm going to smoke a carton today, and not have any tomorrow?!
I really think ppl are just buying into an idea, to say "I am GREEN"
I'm sure in the future they will be able to produce more efficiently, but their is still a LONG way to go.
@JFizoust garbage. you state that the KW required to produce a panel is so outrageous they should be banned. That is out and out garbage. It is a non-argument. furthermore you willfully confuse the roles oil and solar should play in the energy portfolio. Oil is not going anywhere, we will always need liquid fuels for transportation. But to argue that typical right propaganda that solar is a boondoggle isn't just dishonest it is shameful
@SoFlaPatriot a panel once produced will generate power for 20 to 30 years. I am in the special metals business, we supply to every solar manufacturer you can name. We also sell material to the oil industry. Guess what? We employ alot more people on the solar side. Solar is supplemental. A one megawatt farm ( 5 ACRES) can produce enough energy to support HUNDREDS of homes. ALL the arguments against solar are non-arguments
@SoFlaPatriot Once Produced is the key word. Like an eco car, you think it comes straight from the earth the way it is? No, machines have to produce it, heavy machines, that run on Fossil Fuels. And tires (rubber), wires, steel frames, every thing must just come straight from the earth just as is.But then the second you sit down it's all the sudden ecot? See what you will. It's your perfect world I guess.
In just FIVE YEARS between 2004-2009 thick perennial arctic sea ice DROPPED 42%. This was discovered by NASA satellite measurements. Reported 7/7/09

Global Warming is changing our world NOW. CO2 is 35% above levels for 650,000 years. In just 30 years CO2 will be over 450ppm, enough to acidify oceans to the point of stopping the growth of many planktons and corals. They are at the base of the oceans' food chain.
Imagine, the energy needed to sequester/capture dirty emissions at coal power plants is produced by renewable alternatives that're clean... the incentive to build coal power plants will dramatically fall as their emissions are considered. This is probably why there's so much rhetoric and arm throwing. Coal cannot survive a REAL clean power initiative, and this is why many people fight the very fundamentals of AGW theories. It's also why people ignore the OTHER dirty emissions present in coal.
We either subsidize coal power plants so they can capture/sequester the dirty emissions, and henceforth remove the advantages coal has versus renewable alternatives, or we tax CO2 and bankrupt coal power plants. So... the only way to make coal power plants competitive and to keep it that way is to actively combat those who say that CO2 is a pollutant and should be regulated. The moment CO2 is a pollutant and must be regulated is the day coal starts its slow death.
Yes, we need to replace fossil fuel power with renewable power. But not by adding huge generators and transmission lines to the already ugly grid. We need distributed renewable generation, described by Amory Levins at the Rocky Mountain Institute. Just look at the monstrous images of huge wind rotors and solar arrays--it smacks of Big Brother. No, we need feed-in tariffs and distributed generation so that all of us can build small rooftop generators and get paid by the utilities.
There has never been such a thing as a free market--well at least since the very beginning of civilization. As soon as civilization began, the fat cats, the demagogues, and the oligarchs started using their wealth and political power to control markets for their own interests. The free market place is a propaganda fiction created by demagogues to fool dittoheads into voting for lackeys like George Bush, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and ... yes ... Barak Obama.
Just because the corrupt have undermined the free market doesn't mean we shouldn't keep striving for it. There has never been perfect liberty either, but the closer we get to the ideal the better off we are as a society.
Bingo! You got that right, sunfalcon. But not only has there been no perfect liberty, there has been no liberty period. Liberty and freedom are just fictions and abstractions to con the gullible. It's a Darwinian world, pure and simple. And free markets, such as they are, have nothing to do with liberty. Indeed, free markets, for the nanosecond they might actually exist, are the anathema of liberty. For very soon, the big fish eat all the little fish in this Darwinian world.
Liberty is being free from coercion by government, not being free of competition in a free market. Liberty is being free to exercise your natural rights; freedom to think, speak, act, etc, as you will, so long as you don't injure another person's liberty.
Let's take a close look at the present example--the Repower America Campaign and those who are benefiting from it and who and what will be hurt by it. It will hurt small people like me, whose land will be taken and used for purposes adverse to their interests. It will hurt ecosystems and habitats. Distributed generation would create even more jobs and greatly benefit small business. But RA is all about big corporations and materials produced off shore. Where's the liberty there?
Repower America will benefit corporations like GE, PG&E, SCE, Sempra, etc. Much of the labor will come from offshore, as will much of the materials used to build the projects. We make very few of the products used to build electrical projects in this country. These corporations wave the flag in their ads but sell us Americans out. Small distributed projects on rooftops would benefit small business and local workers. But we hear little about Distributed Generation. Where's the liberty?
If you'll look back at my previous posts you'll notice I identify the manipulation of the currency and interest rates as one of the problems. However, that problem is that Republican businessmen borrow money with no intention of paying it back, but rather that the government (federal reserve) has been flooding the market with easy money which fueled the distortions like the tech bubble and later the housing bubble. You need to get your history straight; running away won't help.
Pop quiz: how many solar panels would it take to power the US? The answer is 2% of the US, or an area about the size of Georgia.
In reality, energy and man-hours spent on renewable energy are resource not spent on other things, AIDS in Africa, building houses, farming, etc. If we had infinite money, maybe we could of a solar panel the size of Georgia. But we don't, and we need to instead prioritizing spending instead of signing on to everything.
We are not asking for it. This is a mandate superceding any precedented legal & policy guidelines which historically may have applied. Economic policy decisions WILL be driven entirely by benevolent sustainable development protocols. All economic machinery are to be validated only by these protocols and guidelines which conform therewith.

Yes, it is the passage to a civilization free of the dirty, disease producing, abusive of the environment and bloody hydrocarbons (oil and coal). Yes let us build a civilization based on energy sources that are renewable, clean, healthy to the human body, environmentally friendly, free of potential ecological disaster and dangerous waste. Solar & wind energy and a few others meet such fundamental standards. YES, it can be done! With clarity & determination.
@healtheplanetfirst "Huge amounts of fossil fuels are used in the manufacture of the cells and, just like many other electronics, the waste metals not used in production also present their own disposal problems, mercury and chromium being two of the top problem-makers. We've also reported before that the installation of solar panels also includes toxic materials like the PVC and glues used in the conduit."
You are clueless, but looks like you just choosing what you see.
"By looking at Asia, one of the leaders in solar applications, we see an area that is starting to have disposal problems from the use of all of the toxins during manufacture. In addition, the electronics industry generated 2.6 million tons of waste in 2005, most of which was ditched in landfills or incinerators, or shipped to developing nations for disposal. Meaning that either way it leached into groundwater, harmed the air or directly harmed people during the dismantling. "
CSP and EGS are the only two UNLIMITED sources of clean baseload power available with today's tech.
CSP can support an all electric world and can help reduce negative albedo by use of billions of mirrors after its decommissioning.
EGS can support thousands of such global populations!
Then, all countries will become part of a true space based race. Only then will there be evolutionary success past pretentious and greedy human nature...
Market capitalism has become corrupted because it is dominated by greed and not by responsibility. Live is not only about money, so don't let money rule. Money is the most common course of war, hate & fight around the world. Yet another argument to stop that one-issue thinking. Government is a part and of course each individual is a part of the solution. Social and Individual freedom have to be as important as Capitalism.
Human greed is a constant. Capitalism bends human greed to the common good by rewarding those who serve society economically. The systems we have now are corrupted, but not because of capitalism. Rather, the source of the corruption is government which interferes with capitalism by redistributing wealth, regulating excessively, and paying off special interests.
Human greed for me, emerges as a result of human frustration due to a lack of love, happinez and/or means of living. Capitalism to me is in essention just a form to regulate trade and spread goods around the world more easily. Capitalism now destroys billions of money, thousands of good firms and factory's. That is not rewarding, it's punishing people who serve society. Governements were erected because of the inhuman crises that modern capitalism creates. Don't be mislead, let Love guide you...
Capitalism is a politico-economic system based on private ownership of the means of production and in which the powers of the state are limited to the protection of the individuals rights against the initiation of physical force. There is, in other words, no capitalist system existing in this world right now. There hasn't been since the U.S. abandoned the system around the turn of the 20th century. Government intervention is what is causing the crisis to attribute to modern capitalism.
Mr. Sunfalcon, I prefer to stop this discussion, I see that you are not interacting at all with me. I hope you can with others. I don't like being bullied. It's painfull and not leading to understanding of one another. Goodbye and let love guide you
You're not being bullied here and to the extent we're talking past each other is a result of you not wishing to be candid about the nature of capitalism.
I agree, love should guide us, but the expression of love is liberty, not government control. If you want to love your fellow man then let him live free, uncoerced, and secure in the property he produces by his own efforts.
Within 10 years? Than you have to stimulate it more than the market can, have to give it a boost, like in Germany the feed-in tax does at the moment. And as a spin-off Germany is now the biggest exporter of sustainable stuff in the world! If Obama/America wants change, it better changes good and you better hurry up now! No time to wait, leave the oil-addiction, downscale, work together, live ecological, live social. We will walk beside you - Adri from Holland, land of wind and water.
The way Earthquake affected people afraid of their cracked walls & roofs to be falling on them are sitting under the open sky in the chilled cold, similarly the US investors afraid of declining economy are not investing any more in the collapsed US financial crisis scared of their investments to distort in the suicide economy, thus making the US economy balloon burst altogether. 3:54 And (the unbelievers) plotted and planned, and Allah too planned, and the best of planners is Allah.
This is an extraordinarily powerful and effective ad, very impressive. The combination of the music, which builds in poignancy and intensity throughout, the images and the words really is stunning and provocative. Well done, We Can Solve It campaign! The most important issue to ever face humankind deserves such a superlative ad campaign.
Because, you know, free market capitalism sure helped the stock market. Now we have the government bailing wall street out. I mean, as an economic system it works great.
What part of the market is capitalistic when you have the government pumping trillions of dollars into the economy and distorting whole markets like housing with multi-trillion dollar fiction entities like Frannie\Freddie? We need to return to capitalism to save our economy too; government has failed.
To RedDreadSky: I am not advocating communism, but there are alternatives.
sunfalcon: The reason we have the government pumping money into the economy right now is because the system failed. You can't say "Oh, the system failed; but, you know, it will self correct." The world doesn't work that way; just look at the great depression.
The Great Depression is a great example of the government causing the problem (federal reserve manipulations) and then making the problem worse (FDR lengthened and deepened the depression with his litney of government programs that sapped wealth from the real economy for make work projects). The "system" that failed is the government manipulated system. Free markets work everytime they're tried.
TheRaven7, thank you for posting the title and artist of the song in this ad! I've been trying to figure that out and haven't had any success on Google, so you've really solved a mystery for me. What a perfect, perfect song they chose for this ad--powerful!
Sadly yes, often it's argued that they are save by now, and though it is very unlikely that an event like Tschernobyl will happen again, the safety of the reactor itself was never the main problem.
The true problem is the waste they produce, whitch is hazardousa for millions to come.
And on the long run handling this waste, will cost us more energy and money, than they generate in their lifetime.
And as far as I know there's only enough uranium for 80 years or so left.
So your afraid of the potential to produce a few kilos of spent uranium? thats it? You do know that every nuclear plant instalation in the US is designed to house its nuclear fuel forever right? It never leaves, and is constantly surrounded by steel and concrete, as far as i can tell, nukes are the solution to the worlds problems, it'll light the world, make the Arabs poor again, and provide power reliably insted of just when the wind blows. Is it perfect? No, but name a power source that is.
Just to specify your "few kilos" are about 30 tons per year per reactor, and they are not kept at the plant permanently, once in a while they are transported via "spent nuclear fuel shipping casks", to deep geological repository's that have a lifetime of about 2000 years, while the isotopes will remain active for millions, and it also is highly unstable uranium, plotonium, and other products.
And the perfect power source is there yet, a multitrillion ton, fusion generator, right above you ^^.
You are wrong. In the united states of america it is required by law for all nuclear power plants to have in their design the depository for all fuel that it will ever produce. Sorry, your just wrong.
I hate to use the Linkhammer, but in your case it's obviously necessary. I suppose you are referencing, to the dry cask storage, I know them germany builds them, and we have similar laws, but they are only temporarily (some decades or so) And that is where 0.5bill$ Yucca Mountain comes in.
I am already looking forward to your informative evidence to your claims.Jan
I encourage people to go to their website - same globalists who have always wanted to destroy the Middle Class here. How in Congress involved in any of this? Your solutions are not capable of supplying the power we need - not even close. Nuclear would.
So, what is their angle? Why did they spend money producing this slick ad? Because they want MONEY. YOUR money. And like the AIG execs, once they get it they will lavish it on themselves. Government will not provide the solution...can't
Scott, I agree with you that Solar and Wind power are not going to 'repower America,' I like the WE campaign for getting this out. Oil is turning into a very dangerous source of power in that demand from India and China is growing exponentially bigger - if we don't get started with a whole new energy infrastructure, I can see economic collapse or energy wars on the horizon. It's serious stuff. This ad campaign is a start to letting our leaders know we can't/won't let big oil control us anymore.
I even used it in a presentation at school against offshore oil drilling. We as Americans need to focus on cleaner more efficient way of energy today.
Notice that this commercial is telling government to "free us". Why don't you do it? Why get nanny government to pay for power plants and regulate electricity generation? If you really care, buy solar panels from GE (you can really get them) and run your house and car on that. Do it yourself rather than force everyone else to do it for you.
likewise, where in the constitution does it say we have to spend tax money on illegal, undeclared wars based on lies to help implode the economy? i dont think it does either, so whats the point?
it's weird. I do too, and I don't even believe in man made global warming. I guess it's just the fact of seeing the American people finally standing up for themselves instead of continuing this "it'll never happen" rhetoric.
This is perfectly possible. If you are OK with tacking a zero onto your power bill we can have electricity without burning anything, sure. A dollar per kilowatt hour here we come, or is Al Gore just going to pay for all of this?
The only way to generate sufficient power to run this country without burning anything is NUCLEAR not solar or those ridiculous windmills. There is not a windmill generator today that has generated more dollars worth of power than it took to build and maintain, FACT.
I will pay a dollar per kilowatt hour if it means saving our environment, if it keeps the hole in the ozone layer from expanding any more than it already has, keeps countless people from dying from asthma and cancer and other pollutant-related diseases, and keeps our earth from becoming a smog-filled hotbox.
And besides, if you're not paying for gas, why would you care paying more for electricity if it meant that future generations could actually have a place to LIVE?
You give yourself way to much credit for the impact you have on this world. Humans are nasty insignificant apes in the terms of the world climate cycles, and you are an idiot sheep for buying "the sky is falling" horseshit the ecomentalists like to rant about.
Live your own life the way you want, but do not try to tell other people how they should life theirs, especially me.
Environmental groups claim to be liberal, that is a lie, they are fascist to the core, unbending even with new evidence
You need to chill right the hell out - never once did I a) tell you to live your life or b) say that I bought "the sky is falling" theories. I'm not aligning myself with any particular group. But the statistics I pointed out ARE legitimate, and they ARE true, and they WILL happen eventually. Simply because you may get your information from various and biased news channels or political parties does not mean the rest of us do; when you have a masters in environmental science, let's talk.
So you do think that the world is coming to an end then, and we and our cars are the cause?
You didn't make any statistics, but heres one, verified back millions of years from deep sea cores: THE AVERAGE CHANGE IN GLOBAL MEAN TEMPERATURE PER CENTURY, UP OR DOWN, HAS AVERAGED 2.1 DEGREES C. That means that every century in the last five million years the earth has had its temperature rise or fall on average 2 degrees C. This means that the 1.4 we experienced in the last 150 is nothing special.
I understand that perfectly well, but that entire paragraph you just spewed eliminates ONE word from my entire comment - hotbox. Carcinogens, toxins, and ODS' STILL cause asthma and cancer and ozone depletion. And besides, that is an AVERAGE - it's brought down by extreme norths and souths and equator-lying areas that have seen minimal climate change. I live somewhere where the summers used to be about 75 and now they're closing in on 100. Enough with the conspiracy theories.
Actually we saying that we need cleaner energy because clearly this polution is not good for the environment, if you don't think so then you're an idiot.
P.S. If you harbor such deep abhoration for human society in terms of the environmental crisis, then why do you participate in discussions about it, let alone have a virtual conniption based on your interpretation of someone else's somewhat vague comment, which is in turn taken out of context? Why do you bother to insult someone with different ideals than you, who was simply responding to your seemingly misinformed assertions, and asking you an easily answered question?
Your right. Humans have never had any impact on their world. The trees are cutting themselves down. The ozone layer is just a myth. There never really was a dodo bird. And this so called "pollution" is really just not-so-yummy candy.
Jimmy, can you honestly sit here and tell me that you are afraid that the world is coming to an end and we are the cause? Are you really afraid that your going to die of global warming? Please be honest, especially with yourself, because fear is the tool of environmental groups to get you to fork over money, nothing more.
Until we can put a age cap for the House and Senate nothing will be done. We have too many old people and the old ways. We need two or three terms limits for each. After that you are out and done.
Damn straight. Something needs to be done, not just for people, but for all life. Damn ideas keep being discussed but nothing is being done! That's as low as one can get.
When you make a comment here, please say which music you are referring to. There are at least two ads in discussion musicwise. The one for TO OUR LEADERS IS by Peter Howard Morris published by DeWolfe Music. It is called SERIOUS AND PURPOSEFUL STRING MOOD: AFFIRMATION. It is on DWCD 0340 track #8. Go to DeWolfe and check it out. That should end the discussion about the music's title. Now, does anyone know where to get the PRINTED MUSIC SCORE for this fabulous piece? Our string group wants it.

That's not the music. Those credits are for a different commercial. Did you hear William H. Macy in there anywhere? Someone else posted the music earlier.
This commercial is beautiful it embodies our desire to a better future and I truly believe its possible and we desperately need it. In the past people never thought that flying was possible or even cell phones and look how far weve come. We could go even further and provide a path of clean energy for generations to come.
Is actually sad, you are asking, ok demanding that these people take care of business? get off the computer and YOU do something. Get them all out of there Democrats and Republicans!
"WE" is an organization commited to doing just that. They are committed and are working to reduce our oil dependency. In any case, our leaders are our leaders for a reason. To get things like this fixed. Telling us to get off the computer and do something is like saying it's sad that we demand a flourishing economy and that we should get off our asses and do something about it.
All of us could have Wind Turbines, Solar Systems and Geothermal in our yards, which supplied all your energy and the extra you could sell for profit. For the greedy at heart think of the money we can make selling our extra electrical energy to the world, since most of the products that we produce can not be bought by most of the world, they cost too much. So why not export our extra energy! With Solar Satellites and Orbital Solar systems we will lead the world in energy. That's reason to do it!
Yes finally someone that gets it. Now why would anyone oppose to that? Oh yeah I know who would be against it, greedy filthy rich oil companies that don't want us free ourselves from our dependence on oil. Shame on them. We have to fight together to make this happen.
I know one thing is true you all wish you had a Turbine in your back yard right now, that supplied all your enegry and allow you to sell all the extra back to the govenment for a profit.
For all you jokers that say that it can't be done, think of the money we can make selling our extra electrical enegry to the world, since most of the products that we product can not be bought by most of the world, they cost too much. So why not export our extra enegry!
Not everyone lives in the desert where it's sunny almost all the time for solar cells, or in the Plains where it's windy most of the time for wind turbines, so what do you suggest for them? SOL?
Wind or solar energy will be carried to your town the same way traditional electricity is carried. The point is to lower our dependence on oil and in the meanwhile research for more sources of energy which will lead us to be completely free of oil dependence, I mean we'll eventually run out of it. Plus this will create thousands of very needed jobs.
It will also end thousands of jobs, and quite abruptly if done in only 10 years, which is never going to happen anyways. As for the evil oil companies, what corporation spend more money lobbying than all the oil corporations combined? Yes, GE, but that's OK, they are saving the planet, right? What are we going to use to make power when the sun isn't shining and the wind isn't blowing since Gore opposes nuclear and hydroelectric? Are we going to shut down the grid at night?
Good luck building all the extra power grids and long distance transmission lines in only 10 years. With the price of steel and copper to boot, it's gonna be more than a challenge.
There is always that little thing where if we mess up the Earth's ecosystem enough, it could kill us all through crazy hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis, flooding, drought, etc. But I guess not everyone believes it until their house is halfway underwater...which on a large scale, would bankrupt all the disaster insurance companies, forcing the government to bail them all out...thereby messing up an already damaged economy.
Keeping with convention is not the best energy plan IMO.
I thought the reason to use alternative energy was two-fold. Firstly, to allow for the U.S. to independently support its energy needs so that it isn't at the mercy of OPEC. And secondly, the Middle East has enough oil to last for the next 50 years. After that, we'll have to drill the north pole...not a good energy plan IMO. Hydro power tends to mess up ecosystems and cause crazy drought and flooding. Nuclear power tends to produce toxic waste, which mutates everything. (See the Simpsons)
Every time I hear "climate crisis" I want to puke. A 1C change over 140 years isn't a crisis. The real reason to use alternative energies (real ones like hydro and nuclear) is to reduce oil use and save money, not to halt a perfectly normal climate change.
Even if you don't believe in climate change energy security is important. Renewable energy is the best form IMO but we very well will need other sources before we move from fossil fuels to renewables.
This gives me goosebumps!

@JFizoust garbage. you state that the KW required to produce a panel is so outrageous they should be banned. That is out and out garbage.

It's also why people ignore the OTHER dirty emissions present in coal.
gukonni 2 years ago

SaveTheFoothills 2 years ago
Just because the corrupt have undermined the free market doesn't mean we shouldn't keep striving for it. There has never been perfect liberty either, but the closer we get to the ideal the better off we are as a society.
sunfalcon 2 years ago
SaveTheFoothills 2 years ago
Liberty is being free from coercion by government, not being free of competition in a free market. Liberty is being free to exercise your natural rights; freedom to think, speak, act, etc, as you will, so long as you don't injure another person's liberty.
sunfalcon 2 years ago 2
Let's take a close look at the present example--the Repower America Campaign and those who are benefiting from it and who and what will be hurt by it. It will hurt small people like me, whose land will be taken and used for purposes adverse to their interests. It will hurt ecosystems and habitats. Distributed generation would create even more jobs and greatly benefit small business. But RA is all about big corporations and materials produced off shore. Where's the liberty there?
SaveTheFoothills 2 years ago
Repower America will benefit corporations like GE, PG&E, SCE, Sempra, etc. Much of the labor will come from offshore, as will much of the materials used to build the projects. We make very few of the products used to build electrical projects in this country. These corporations wave the flag in their ads but sell us Americans out. Small distributed projects on rooftops would benefit small business and local workers. But we hear little about Distributed Generation. Where's the liberty?
SaveTheFoothills 2 years ago

Social and Individual freedom have to be as important as Capitalism.
rodecaban 3 years ago
Human greed is a constant. Capitalism bends human greed to the common good by rewarding those who serve society economically. The systems we have now are corrupted, but not because of capitalism. Rather, the source of the corruption is government which interferes with capitalism by redistributing wealth, regulating excessively, and paying off special interests.
sunfalcon 3 years ago
Human greed for me, emerges as a result of human frustration due to a lack of love, happinez and/or means of living. Capitalism to me is in essention just a form to regulate trade and spread goods around the world more easily. Capitalism now destroys billions of money, thousands of good firms and factory's. That is not rewarding, it's punishing people who serve society. Governements were erected because of the inhuman crises that modern capitalism creates. Don't be mislead, let Love guide you...
rodecaban 3 years ago
Capitalism is a politico-economic system based on private ownership of the means of production and in which the powers of the state are limited to the protection of the individuals rights against the initiation of physical force. There is, in other words, no capitalist system existing in this world right now. There hasn't been since the U.S. abandoned the system around the turn of the 20th century. Government intervention is what is causing the crisis to attribute to modern capitalism.

rodecaban 3 years ago

We will walk beside you - Adri from Holland, land of wind and water.
rodecaban 3 years ago
Germany's also buying up a bunch of solar panels, even though it's not the sunniest place on earth.

What part of the market is capitalistic when you have the government pumping trillions of dollars into the economy and distorting whole markets like housing with multi-trillion dollar fiction entities like Frannie\Freddie? We need to return to capitalism to save our economy too; government has failed.
sunfalcon 3 years ago 4
To RedDreadSky: I am not advocating communism, but there are alternatives.
sunfalcon: The reason we have the government pumping money into the economy right now is because the system failed. You can't say "Oh, the system failed; but, you know, it will self correct." The world doesn't work that way; just look at the great depression.
kree8peace 3 years ago
The Great Depression is a great example of the government causing the problem (federal reserve manipulations) and then making the problem worse (FDR lengthened and deepened the depression with his litney of government programs that sapped wealth from the real economy for make work projects). The "system" that failed is the government manipulated system. Free markets work everytime they're tried.

I am in favor of nuclear reactors. Anybody have a problem with nukes as a solution to using fossil fuels?
81broncoman 3 years ago
Sadly yes, often it's argued that they are save by now, and though it is very unlikely that an event like Tschernobyl will happen again, the safety of the reactor itself was never the main problem.
The true problem is the waste they produce, whitch is hazardousa for millions to come.
And on the long run handling this waste, will cost us more energy and money, than they generate in their lifetime.
And as far as I know there's only enough uranium for 80 years or so left.
Have a nice day.
tickingGear 3 years ago
So your afraid of the potential to produce a few kilos of spent uranium? thats it? You do know that every nuclear plant instalation in the US is designed to house its nuclear fuel forever right? It never leaves, and is constantly surrounded by steel and concrete, as far as i can tell, nukes are the solution to the worlds problems, it'll light the world, make the Arabs poor again, and provide power reliably insted of just when the wind blows. Is it perfect? No, but name a power source that is.
81broncoman 3 years ago
Just to specify your "few kilos" are about 30 tons per year per reactor, and they are not kept at the plant permanently, once in a while they are transported via "spent nuclear fuel shipping casks", to deep geological repository's that have a lifetime of about 2000 years, while the isotopes will remain active for millions, and it also is highly unstable uranium, plotonium, and other products.
And the perfect power source is there yet, a multitrillion ton, fusion generator, right above you ^^.
tickingGear 3 years ago
You are wrong. In the united states of america it is required by law for all nuclear power plants to have in their design the depository for all fuel that it will ever produce. Sorry, your just wrong.
81broncoman 3 years ago
I hate to use the Linkhammer, but in your case it's obviously necessary. I suppose you are referencing, to the dry cask storage, I know them germany builds them, and we have similar laws, but they are only temporarily (some decades or so) And that is where 0.5bill$ Yucca Mountain comes in.

ScottfromTexas 3 years ago
Scott, I agree with you that Solar and Wind power are not going to 'repower America,' I like the WE campaign for getting this out. Oil is turning into a very dangerous source of power in that demand from India and China is growing exponentially bigger - if we don't get started with a whole new energy infrastructure, I can see economic collapse or energy wars on the horizon. It's serious stuff. This ad campaign is a start to letting our leaders know we can't/won't let big oil control us anymore.

81broncoman 3 years ago
I will pay a dollar per kilowatt hour if it means saving our environment, if it keeps the hole in the ozone layer from expanding any more than it already has, keeps countless people from dying from asthma and cancer and other pollutant-related diseases, and keeps our earth from becoming a smog-filled hotbox.
And besides, if you're not paying for gas, why would you care paying more for electricity if it meant that future generations could actually have a place to LIVE?
MDSV47 3 years ago 4
You give yourself way to much credit for the impact you have on this world. Humans are nasty insignificant apes in the terms of the world climate cycles, and you are an idiot sheep for buying "the sky is falling" horseshit the ecomentalists like to rant about.
Live your own life the way you want, but do not try to tell other people how they should life theirs, especially me.
Environmental groups claim to be liberal, that is a lie, they are fascist to the core, unbending even with new evidence
81broncoman 3 years ago
You need to chill right the hell out - never once did I a) tell you to live your life or b) say that I bought "the sky is falling" theories. I'm not aligning myself with any particular group. But the statistics I pointed out ARE legitimate, and they ARE true, and they WILL happen eventually. Simply because you may get your information from various and biased news channels or political parties does not mean the rest of us do; when you have a masters in environmental science, let's talk.
MDSV47 3 years ago
So you do think that the world is coming to an end then, and we and our cars are the cause?
You didn't make any statistics, but heres one, verified back millions of years from deep sea cores: THE AVERAGE CHANGE IN GLOBAL MEAN TEMPERATURE PER CENTURY, UP OR DOWN, HAS AVERAGED 2.1 DEGREES C. That means that every century in the last five million years the earth has had its temperature rise or fall on average 2 degrees C. This means that the 1.4 we experienced in the last 150 is nothing special.
81broncoman 3 years ago
I understand that perfectly well, but that entire paragraph you just spewed eliminates ONE word from my entire comment - hotbox. Carcinogens, toxins, and ODS' STILL cause asthma and cancer and ozone depletion. And besides, that is an AVERAGE - it's brought down by extreme norths and souths and equator-lying areas that have seen minimal climate change. I live somewhere where the summers used to be about 75 and now they're closing in on 100. Enough with the conspiracy theories.
MDSV47 3 years ago
Actually we saying that we need cleaner energy because clearly this polution is not good for the environment, if you don't think so then you're an idiot.
xxx007xxxpk 3 years ago
MDSV47 3 years ago
Your right. Humans have never had any impact on their world. The trees are cutting themselves down. The ozone layer is just a myth. There never really was a dodo bird. And this so called "pollution" is really just not-so-yummy candy.

That is the reason we should do it!

Not everyone lives in the desert where it's sunny almost all the time for solar cells, or in the Plains where it's windy most of the time for wind turbines, so what do you suggest for them? SOL?
packrat76 3 years ago
Wind or solar energy will be carried to your town the same way traditional electricity is carried. The point is to lower our dependence on oil and in the meanwhile research for more sources of energy which will lead us to be completely free of oil dependence, I mean we'll eventually run out of it. Plus this will create thousands of very needed jobs.
thebdgirl 3 years ago
It will also end thousands of jobs, and quite abruptly if done in only 10 years, which is never going to happen anyways. As for the evil oil companies, what corporation spend more money lobbying than all the oil corporations combined? Yes, GE, but that's OK, they are saving the planet, right? What are we going to use to make power when the sun isn't shining and the wind isn't blowing since Gore opposes nuclear and hydroelectric? Are we going to shut down the grid at night?
packrat76 3 years ago
Power can be moved easier than Oil. Thats like saying everyone who doesnt live next to an oil pump is SOL. Seriously, use you brain.

Keeping with convention is not the best energy plan IMO.
recoton007 3 years ago
I thought the reason to use alternative energy was two-fold. Firstly, to allow for the U.S. to independently support its energy needs so that it isn't at the mercy of OPEC. And secondly, the Middle East has enough oil to last for the next 50 years. After that, we'll have to drill the north pole...not a good energy plan IMO. Hydro power tends to mess up ecosystems and cause crazy drought and flooding. Nuclear power tends to produce toxic waste, which mutates everything. (See the Simpsons)
recoton007 3 years ago
Every time I hear "climate crisis" I want to puke. A 1C change over 140 years isn't a crisis. The real reason to use alternative energies (real ones like hydro and nuclear) is to reduce oil use and save money, not to halt a perfectly normal climate change.

You have got to be the stupidest motherfucker I've seen all week.
zabrak999 3 years ago
Even if you don't believe in climate change energy security is important. Renewable energy is the best form IMO but we very well will need other sources before we move from fossil fuels to renewables.
