Great song, no question. And this video is cool too. This was a very un-typical Hollywood couple who not only actually stayed together but did some good as well. Clearly very rare in that world.
he really did get a raw deal from don kirsner and i agree with you all how beautiful this song really is . . . . . i havent heard this version for 30 years, i think i got some dust in my eyes when i was listening to it LOL !
@hornetsnest001 hear hear! i Second that Motion, send it to the Academy, found the chords for this many years ago and played it to some friends. everybody danced, their own way, even 2-step texas style hahaha. beautiful song, great work, Mr. Nesmith.

This is simply wonderful on the eyes and ears, thanks again for the upload, to You Tube thanks for the power and space and long live and God Save Michael Nesmith, A+
I keep returning to this tune. A truly well crafted song with meaningful lyrics. One of those type of songs that pop up from nowhere and stay in your mind forever.
@eanum Yes, yes, yes. That's exactly what I feel hearing this wonder of a song. This is my definition of beauty. Thanks for posting probably not only my thoughts, eanum. Thank you!
how on earth is this man not a GOD... his music has been haunting and original for over 50 years. In relation to what's around now posing as music, he deserved more than he received.
@0Meaty Not true. This song came out in the days when there were LOTS of hippie babes and their bearded boyfriends doing their hippie living all across the country. They lived in meadows and on mountains and near rivers and so on. So, you see, this gorgeous song is not about a bovine but, rather, a beautiful young woman and her man being themselves and living free while hurting no one.....
@jtcivilwar1863 Been one of my favs, learned to play/sing it in early 70s. In a Google query I got this for your info: Joanne:Michael Nesmith (Formerly of The Monkees.) This was a great song that made the Top 40 in 1970. #1. (Original key) G C Am7 G F G
@alexwritestube Thanks a lot! I love this song, and I tried to request it once to a radio station, but they said that it wasn't recorded in the 70s, so they wouldn't play it that day. I was upset, since I was pretty sure that it was recorded in either 1970 or 71. At least I know I was right...
I'd have to agree with guyNbluejeans. As a song it was typical of the hippy time. I was 15yrs old living in San Diego and remember hearing it for the first time on the radio, station KCBQ. Oddly, at the time I was hopelessly in love with a classmate named Joanne. Perhaps that's why I remember it 40+ years later.
coachrv31. I truly can feel your pain. My wife has battled cancer for 14 years and now we may be nearing the awful end of that battle. Jennifers time has been numbered.
Wow..this song used to play at the speedway when i was a kid...everytime i hear it now it takes me back to those speedway days! ...and im smiling:)..never new it was about this Joanne tho...
Michael has a beautiful voice. this video is awesome. Paul and Joanne very lucky and fortunate people. Touched by Angels. Mike has a Studio called Videoranch in Sand City Ca. hangs out with Johnny Rivers. I hear. another beautiful man and music.
lovely video thx very much. one guy wrote he didn't get lucky like Paul and meet his soul mate and sleeps with his dog, well me same, but sleep with cat. but my cat doesn't smell like you say your dog does.
I can't remember when I first heard this, but it touched me and immediately became one of my favorites. I also remember thinking how odd it was that Mike Nesmith would be doing a very country song. I found out many years later how The Monkees were formed, and it made a bit more sense. It also explained why Mickey Dolenz did 99% of the singing. It definitely wasn't for want of talent in the others; he was the only one of the group who had the singing style needed to make The Monkees work..
This really is a lovely creation. I honestly never though of Joanne as Joanne Newman. And I'm not sure it really makes sense to think of it as JN. Does any know if Nesmith really meant it to be about her? If the answer is no, it doesn't diminish this video.
@sandiegofishes I saw you write your crap before and now you're back doing it again. They lived in meadows and on mountains and near rivers and so on. So, you see, this gorgeous song is not about a bovine but, rather, a beautiful young woman and her man being themselves and living free while hurting no one.....
What a beautiful couple. An example of the perfect couple. There was no wedge that could breakdown what was true love between this couple. It's no secret what TRUE love can endure.

Michael Nesmith wrote this dreadfull tearjerking song about having his first experiance with a hermaferdite named Joanne Worley who he met on the set of the Laugh In TV show back in 1968 and Nesmith used to perform cunnilingas as well as felatio on Joanne Worleys dick, balls, anus as well as his/her Vagina.

That is so nice. My parents also were married for 48 years until death made them part this world. Talk about standing by your man. WOW. Great tribute!
@guyNbluejeans For me, the ability to transform one's good fortune, artistic gift, and basic compassion for others into "pitching in" to your community neighborhood near and far, IS immortality. Yes sir, thats what Mr. Newman and family were able to do. Loved most of his movie roles, but ultimately, I was just so daymmn proud that he transformed his worldly gains for making the world a little more humane. Thats why i help out too. Also, I buy his Foundation's products :) God Bless the Newmans!

How ironic this beautiful song really is. From the time I first heard it, I loved it. Then the real meaning and beautiful memories of its lyrics it came to be when I lost my wife to cancer 7 years ago. How alive these beautiful memories still are and how the love we shared continues to grow even though she is not here. Years pass, and time marches on, but the beautiful memories we shared together are just as alive today as they were 7 years ago. Honey I love you and always will.
@coachrv31 awwww, that is the sweetest thing I've read in a very long time. You have touched my heart. I'm so sorry for your lost but I'm grateful you shared those words with me. thanks
@coachrv31 what a sweetheart you are. she was a very lucky and much loved woman, couldn't ask for more than that. so sorry for your broken heart. don't know what I'll do if my husband goes before me.
@lazyishardwork Not true. When this song was written, the whole hippy movement was in full-swing and lots and lots of those folks were living the "back to nature" lifestyle, which included living by ponds and streams and meadows. I know this to be true because I was a kid back then watching it all happen.
The song is about a beautiful flower child and unrequited love.
a beautiful song made even more so by the moving tribute to the late, great Paul Newman and his wonderful wife of 50 years, Joanne....we love you, Butch !!!
I never heard this song until tonight. I was thinking of Mike and the Monkees and wanted to reconnect with simpler times when my brother used to lift me up. CS Lewis said "It was when I was happiest that I longed most...The sweetest thing in all my life has been the longing...to find the place where all the beauty came from." I can't help but wonder if this longing we have--to be with those we've loved--was actually planted within us by the One who made all things possible.
Produced By Felton Jarvis -Recorded February 20,1970-From the "Magnetic South" Album-Singer-Michael Smith and the First National Band-Written By Michael Nesmith. Thank You musicvideoswhd.
This is one of the best songs ever written and recorded about unrequited love. If you've ever loved and lost, Mike's accesible lyrics and spot-on lilting emotional tones here echo and reverberate. At least, they do for me.
I have always remembered and loved this song. And I certainly don't mind the pics of Paul and Joanne. Paul Newman is the emodiment of how an entertainer should be!!
I heard this again the other day. WOW! Really like this one. I remember many years ago when it came on the radio and I was taking care of my 4 year old niece - her name in Joanne and I said 'listen to the radio, this guy is singing a song about you', she stopped dead and was quite for the entire song and had the most wonderful smile on her face. One you will always remember. Thanks for posting.
a touching tribute to Paul Newman, and his Joanne certainly one of the classiest couples to grace our stage and screen..thanks for the beautifully composed video
The name that came to mind the first time I heard "Joanne" was Carlene. She was only in the eighth grade and I was a senior, but I was struck dumb by her beauty, like Natalie Wood, only softer. She reminded me of a porcelain doll.
when paul newman was asked the secret to the longevity of his hollywood marriage he simply said... hell, why would i go out for hamburger when i can go home for steak. what an incredible couple. all my respect to both.
I don't mean to be mean but the way I see (hear) it, the song is about fleeting unrequited love. The Newmans were lovingly married for the best part of half a century. Beutiful couple, beautiful song, but the two don't marry, as such.
Oh my god, this was so beautiful, I had remembered Michael Nesmith's song and had no idea I would find it along with this beautifully put together collage of pictures. I am so overcome with emotion from watching this.
just bueatiful this,a relationship to envy and die for,if anybody out there is lucky enough to have found your soul mate, there,s nothing better, not fame, not money or anything else , i see this and i see my girl and me,and in this dirty and sometimes ugly world, im on top of the world!!!! thanks for posting mate !!!!
It is so hard to believe that Paul Newman is dead--he was so much a part of late 20th century American culture--oh how we all miss him. I love this song from 1970--I remember the first time I heard it on a late fall morning-it took my breath away. Great work, Mike!
Oh how I love this song! Mike Nesmith is such a gifted talent. Truly one of the pioneers of folk-rock. And pretty dang funny with his deadpan schtick when part of "The Monkees". THANKS for sharing this delightful "blast from the past" with us! :)
I'm misty eyed. The song Joanne always put a lump in my throat but it even sadder with the passing of Paul Newman. Newman and Woodward had the right formula for a sucessful marrige. They got out of the Hollywood Babylon and lived like a normal married couple in Westport Connecticut.
If for no other reason than writing this classic gem and the criminally under rated "Silver Moon" former Monkee Mike shouod find himself ensconced in the R&R Hall Of Fame! Plus, whoever processed the accompanying visuals starring Paul Newman and THE Joanne Woodward is a By God Genius! I will never tire of listening to this tune, and well, Paul and Joanne's devotion to one another speaks for itself, what a pair! Thanks as always to You Tube for the space, Michael the MAN, and:ROCK ON SHINDIGGERS!
@9erfandex I agree. Personally, I believe Mike had the best voice out of The Monkees. I love everything through the Monkees that he sung. However, The Monkees fullstop should be included in the R&R Hall of Fame. The fact that they've proved themselves to play their own instruments during and after the Monkees is something that R&R Hall of Fame should recognize. If we can recognize the fact, why can't they?
They were an incredible match and a very strong couple. After losing my beloved husband 8 years ago, on September 11, 2001, I completely understand how it feels to be without a cherished spouse and companion. The pain, over time, becomes less severe, but it will never go away. You have created a beautiful tribute-nicely donel
@leadchick I have read your comment over and over. Sorry about your husband, companion. it never does go away. just gets easier to deal with in time...Beautiful song though, timeless..

This song is going out to my wife Joanne. Love you babe.

I don't get it.
When he mentions "The man" he is refering to P{aul. Not many seem to beable to figure this out or even accept this to be so.
All of us in the know, know that Paul was affectionately known as "the man"
MrSteveUtah 2 years ago
It is so hard to believe that Paul Newman is dead--he was so much a part of late 20th century American culture--oh how we all miss him. I love this song from 1970--I remember the first time I heard it on a late fall morning-it took my breath away. Great work, Mike!
chuckbuckbobuck 2 years ago

9erfandex 2 years ago 43
@9erfandex I agree. Personally, I believe Mike had the best voice out of The Monkees. I love everything through the Monkees that he sung. However, The Monkees fullstop should be included in the R&R Hall of Fame. The fact that they've proved themselves to play their own instruments during and after the Monkees is something that R&R Hall of Fame should recognize. If we can recognize the fact, why can't they?
MsDragon1968 1 year ago
@MsDragon1968 Michael Nesmith had the best everything out of The Monkees, most of all talent, especially, songwriting!

I responded to a cable show about Tom Cruise that said Tom can act with the best
of them and suggested that he may have outperformed Newman in the movie
"The color of money". Like you Steve, I was outraged by such a ridiculous comparison, thanks for your feedback.
