  • FROM THE HEART! YES YES YES

  • lol thats my name :)

  • Great song, no question. And this video is cool too. This was a very un-typical Hollywood couple who not only actually stayed together but did some good as well. Clearly very rare in that world.

  • This was, is and always will be a classic. Just beautiful!

  • Absolutely beautiful ballad

  • he really did get a raw deal from don kirsner and i agree with you all how beautiful this song really is . . . . . i havent heard this version for 30 years, i think i got some dust in my eyes when i was listening to it LOL !

  • This beautiful song has been running through my mind for weeks now. So glad I found it here.

  • Incredubly poignant-touches your heart

  • Who could possibly dislike this song?

  • This song reminds me so much of my beautiful Scottish Friend, Carol Ann.

  • One of those difficult songs to find anywhere....Why? It's absoutely beautiful. Thanks.

  • An Oscar and an Emmy for this video! BRAVO!!!

  • @hornetsnest001 hear hear! i Second that Motion, send it to the Academy, found the chords for this many years ago and played it to some friends. everybody danced, their own way, even 2-step texas style hahaha. beautiful song, great work, Mr. Nesmith.

  • I remember it when I was a child in the sixties. I love it.

  • A haunting song, and Mike Nesmith, a wonderful voice that found his way into our hearts!

  • A gorgeous song and a gorgeous and sweet couple; perfect match!

  • mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. that's all.

  • musicvideoswhd I could hit this site daily ad infinitum and never grow weary of the tuneage or your incomparable slide show dedicated to Paul Newman and the Joanne Woodward just excellent work by all concerned! "Joanne" just may well be the finest love song ever composed, and Former Monkee Mike absolutely sang his ass off on it! This is simply wonderful on the eyes and ears, thanks again for the upload, to You Tube thanks for the power and space and long live and God Save Michael Nesmith, A+

  • Great song! and wonderful couple Paul Newman and his lovely wife Joanne Woodward..

  • I keep returning to this tune. A truly well crafted song with meaningful lyrics. One of those type of songs that pop up from nowhere and stay in your mind forever.

  • This wasn't about a cow.. listen to the lyrics. You folks who think so are ridiculous!

  • Yeah this sounds like Mike.

  • ...driven on to desperation.....yeah I know that tune!

  • JUST ONE of the Most Haunting Songs of ALL TIME ! We ALL Have a "Joanne"sometime in our life & it`s just like THIS !

  • this song is truly, absolutely and most incontrovertibly one of THE most beautiful--and beautifully sung--songs of all time

  • @eanum Yes, yes, yes. That's exactly what I feel hearing this wonder of a song. This is my definition of beauty. Thanks for posting probably not only my thoughts, eanum. Thank you!

  • how on earth is this man not a GOD... his music has been haunting and original for over 50 years. In relation to what's around now posing as music, he deserved more than he received.

  • Hahaha, you're right, it is about a cow! That is so great! Must've been some cow.

  • You do know that this song is about a cow don't you?

  • I remember hearing it too somewhere between 1970 and 71.I am glad to have finally found it.

  • What year was this song originally recorded?

  • @jtcivilwar1863 Been one of my favs, learned to play/sing it in early 70s. In a Google query I got this for your info: Joanne:Michael Nesmith (Formerly of The Monkees.) This was a great song that made the Top 40 in 1970. #1. (Original key) G C Am7 G F G

  • @alexwritestube Thanks a lot! I love this song, and I tried to request it once to a radio station, but they said that it wasn't recorded in the 70s, so they wouldn't play it that day. I was upset, since I was pretty sure that it was recorded in either 1970 or 71. At least I know I was right...

  • What a fitting tribute to one of the great love stories of our times. A beautiful song for a beautiful couple. Thanks Mike. RIP Paul.

  • This track was always beautiful.

Finally, when the memories of radio overkill have finally faded, a pleasure to hear it again.

    Thank you.

  • Ive always loved this beautiful song. Thank you for posting it ....

  • sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet as good as lennon , mccarthy, dylan ; don mcclean

hell the list is so long of rocks beautiful songs this stands tall with them all,of them

god how i wish mike would have writtren and sang more but , thanks mike and peace

    and love

  • Dave here. Were they soul-mates, or what? Blessed are they who find eachother instead of passing like ships in the night.

  • Michael greatest achievement. So so very beautiful.

  • I'd have to agree with guyNbluejeans. As a song it was typical of the hippy time. I was 15yrs old living in San Diego and remember hearing it for the first time on the radio, station KCBQ. Oddly, at the time I was hopelessly in love with a classmate named Joanne. Perhaps that's why I remember it 40+ years later.

    kevin

  • coachrv31. I truly can feel your pain. My wife has battled cancer for 14 years and now we may be nearing the awful end of that battle. Jennifers time has been numbered.

  • Joanno kocham Cie <3

  • Wow..this song used to play at the speedway when i was a kid...everytime i hear it now it takes me back to those speedway days! ...and im smiling:)..never new it was about this Joanne tho...

  • очень красиво

  • lol, my name is Joanne to.. =D

  • would never have thought of her for this song ..good match

  • Oh man...love to you...

  • hezký ale znam i lepší

  • hezký

  • First time I've heard this GREAT song in 40 years!

  • I've always liked this song. Thanks for the great pics.

  • This song always touched me deep, has a haunting beauty about it

  • i had this record in high school. i spent quiet time with this. lonely planet boy that i was.

  • Truly great...thanks for this brilliant posting!

  • Wonderful song, beautiful woman. What more do you want?

  • It's apparently about a cow going to slaughter. Really.

  • It's obvious how much he loved her. It's all over the pics.

  • Michael has a beautiful voice. this video is awesome. Paul and Joanne very lucky and fortunate people. Touched by Angels. Mike has a Studio called Videoranch in Sand City Ca. hangs out with Johnny Rivers. I hear. another beautiful man and music.

lovely video thx very much. one guy wrote he didn't get lucky like Paul and meet his soul mate and sleeps with his dog, well me same, but sleep with cat. but my cat doesn't smell like you say your dog does.

  • I can't remember when I first heard this, but it touched me and immediately became one of my favorites. I also remember thinking how odd it was that Mike Nesmith would be doing a very country song. I found out many years later how The Monkees were formed, and it made a bit more sense. It also explained why Mickey Dolenz did 99% of the singing. It definitely wasn't for want of talent in the others; he was the only one of the group who had the singing style needed to make The Monkees work..

  • this song makes me cry, and sigh

  • This really is a lovely creation. I honestly never though of Joanne as Joanne Newman. And I'm not sure it really makes sense to think of it as JN. Does any know if Nesmith really meant it to be about her? If the answer is no, it doesn't diminish this video.

  • this song is timeless!

  • Luv this song and always will.

  • Miichael Nesmith has said on more than one occasion that this song was about a cow.

"She lived in a meadow by a pon>'

    A cow.

  • @sandiegofishes I saw you write your crap before and now you're back doing it again. Two things: 1) Cite your source. 2) In the days when this song was written, there were LOTS of hippie babes and their bearded boyfriends doing their hippie living all across the country. They lived in meadows and on mountains and near rivers and so on. So, you see, this gorgeous song is not about a bovine but, rather, a beautiful young woman and her man being themselves and living free while hurting no one.....

  • @sandiegofishes No, I beg to differ. If you actually listen to the lyrics, he sings, "...she lived NEAR the meadow by a pond.

  • What a beautiful couple. An example of the perfect couple. There was no wedge that could breakdown what was true love between this couple. It's no secret what TRUE love can endure.

  • @yourdickis2limp If my spelling and grammar were as deplorable as yours, there's no way I would be putting comments on youtube and letting the world know how much of an idiot I was.

  • I have loved this song since it came on the radio in 1970!

I was only 12 yr's old and did not know who Michael was singing about.

I am 52 now and have a friend Joanne who is 78 yr's young.

I introduced her to the song and to YOU TUBE. She loves it!

I will NEVER tire of hearing "Joanne". It is beautiful and so are you Michael Nesmith. Thanks for lighting up my life!

  • I was on Foothill Blvd in West Covina the first time I heard this..it always takes me back there.

  • That is so nice. My parents also were married for 48 years until death made them part this world. Talk about standing by your man. WOW. Great tribute!

  • @guyNbluejeans For me, the ability to transform one's good fortune, artistic gift, and basic compassion for others into "pitching in" to your community neighborhood near and far, IS immortality. Yes sir, thats what Mr. Newman and family were able to do. Loved most of his movie roles, but ultimately, I was just so daymmn proud that he transformed his worldly gains for making the world a little more humane. Thats why i help out too. Also, I buy his Foundation's products :) God Bless the Newmans!

  • were they in any movies 2gether? im sure they were just cant recall! :(

  • @goofywilly They were in a movie decades ago. Just can't remember the title. Sorry.

  • This vid is just rad!

  • Im glad no one has covered this one..simply beautiful as it is....

  • Thank god no one has ever covered it...simply beautiful as it is..

  • Thanks for making the video and keeping this beautiful song alive.

  • why when i think of paul newman ,i always thought of steve mcqueen. they just remind me of each other.

  • Never liked this song when it first released 40-odd years ago, but have been listening to it again & again the past day or two, and find it much more intellectually & emotionally deep and comforting, now that I'm 50-odd years old.

  • too many pics, should have slowed them down a bit. great song though.

  • Its weird.... This song has some strange trance inducing quality. I dont know

if its the chord structure, his voice, or what IDK O.o

  • How ironic this beautiful song really is. From the time I first heard it, I loved it. Then the real meaning and beautiful memories of its lyrics it came to be when I lost my wife to cancer 7 years ago. How alive these beautiful memories still are and how the love we shared continues to grow even though she is not here. Years pass, and time marches on, but the beautiful memories we shared together are just as alive today as they were 7 years ago. Honey I love you and always will.

  • @coachrv31 listened to this song hundreds of times and never noticed your comment..sorry to hear..but its great what you had..keep on smiling

  • @coachrv31 awwww, that is the sweetest thing I've read in a very long time. You have touched my heart. I'm so sorry for your lost but I'm grateful you shared those words with me. thanks

  • @coachrv31 what a sweetheart you are. she was a very lucky and much loved woman, couldn't ask for more than that. so sorry for your broken heart. don't know what I'll do if my husband goes before me.

  • @coachrv31 its not about a woman it was inspired by a cow

  • @lazyishardwork yeah i've heard that too

  • @lazyishardwork Not true. When this song was written, the whole hippy movement was in full-swing and lots and lots of those folks were living the "back to nature" lifestyle, which included living by ponds and streams and meadows. I know this to be true because I was a kid back then watching it all happen.

The song is about a beautiful flower child and unrequited love.

  • this was a GREAT song cant believe someone else hasnt covered it?

  • @Greenhornet270 Maybe because its perfect the way it is and doesn't need tampering with :)

  • Nice.Very nice. The song and Paul and Joanne.

  • He was such a great guy!

  • a beautiful song made even more so by the moving tribute to the late, great Paul Newman and his wonderful wife of 50 years, Joanne....we love you, Butch !!!

  • I never heard this song until tonight. I was thinking of Mike and the Monkees and wanted to reconnect with simpler times when my brother used to lift me up. CS Lewis said "It was when I was happiest that I longed most...The sweetest thing in all my life has been the longing...to find the place where all the beauty came from." I can't help but wonder if this longing we have--to be with those we've loved--was actually planted within us by the One who made all things possible.

  • Produced By Felton Jarvis -Recorded February 20,1970-From the "Magnetic South" Album-Singer-Michael Smith and the First National Band-Written By Michael Nesmith. Thank You musicvideoswhd.

  • Great video! I like the way you put it together.

  • Great song.. It is my mom's favorite of all time.

  • Paul Newman was quite literally "the man".!!

  • Paul Newman was quite literally the "man".

  • Mike Nesmith was SO under-rated, what a genuine classic !!!

  • so very poignant. to be put on a par with Layla and Something.

  • great video.never heard this song before.i like it.

  • Beautiful.

  • This is one of the best songs ever written and recorded about unrequited love. If you've ever loved and lost, Mike's accesible lyrics and spot-on lilting emotional tones here echo and reverberate. At least, they do for me.

  • I have always remembered and loved this song. And I certainly don't mind the pics of Paul and Joanne. Paul Newman is the emodiment of how an entertainer should be!!

  • WHAT A GREAT SONG!!!!

Also great photos of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward

  • I can't say for certain but I bet I was the only black girl on the planet who adored that song....it's so beautiful.

    ~~GTL2010~~

  • @GetTheLook2010 thats why music is so great there is no colour barriers and thats the way it should be

  • @Kenebutch So true! I wish everyone could realize that.

    Take care, Kenebutch;

    ~~GTL2010~~

  • @Kenebutch . Absolutely dead right.

  • A wonderful song. Always has been one of my favorites. Mike has that ability to write great songs.

  • wow a great song..a beautiful couple..very much a tear jerker..thanks to musicvideoswhd

  • goodlokking man paul... RIP

  • actually they also owned property in California & New York including a fifth avenue penthouse apartment and the song fit great with the pictures

  • I heard this again the other day. WOW! Really like this one. I remember many years ago when it came on the radio and I was taking care of my 4 year old niece - her name in Joanne and I said 'listen to the radio, this guy is singing a song about you', she stopped dead and was quite for the entire song and had the most wonderful smile on her face. One you will always remember. Thanks for posting.

  • @z650Steve That's a wonderful little account. Thanks for sharing it.:-)

  • i wish Slim Whitman would have recorded a version of this song

  • Man, that is so pretty.

  • Beautiful song by Nesmith.. Awesome tribute Video, thanks for sharing and posting..

    GGG 59

  • Perfect in every way...Thank you for sharing...stay gold

  • a touching tribute to Paul Newman, and his Joanne certainly one of the classiest couples to grace our stage and screen..thanks for the beautifully composed video

  • The name that came to mind the first time I heard "Joanne" was Carlene. She was only in the eighth grade and I was a senior, but I was struck dumb by her beauty, like Natalie Wood, only softer. She reminded me of a porcelain doll.

  • The sad part about getting older, is alot of the great actors are know longer with us .

    ( sad , but that's life )

  • no, that's death. no one is getting out of here alive :)

  • Beautiful song beautiful video! What a great tribute to such wonderful people as the late great Newman & Woodward. Cheers

  • Thank you for sharing such beautiful video. I have always loved this song....

  • Such a beautiful song.

  • when paul newman was asked the secret to the longevity of his hollywood marriage he simply said... hell, why would i go out for hamburger when i can go home for steak. what an incredible couple. all my respect to both.

  • This song is going out to my wife Joanne. Love you babe.

  • I don't mean to be mean but the way I see (hear) it, the song is about fleeting unrequited love. The Newmans were lovingly married for the best part of half a century. Beutiful couple, beautiful song, but the two don't marry, as such.

  • Oh my god, this was so beautiful, I had remembered Michael Nesmith's song and had no idea I would find it along with this beautifully put together collage of pictures. I am so overcome with emotion from watching this.

    MOLLYryaiMOON's mom.

  • I love this song and have since i first heard it when i was younger.

Thanks for posting it budddy, your No 1

  • sounds like frank ifeild.

  • Thank you so much for bring Franf Ifield to mind.

Some people slip thru the cracks in my mind.

    Ifield stuck.

  • just bueatiful this,a relationship to envy and die for,if anybody out there is lucky enough to have found your soul mate, there,s nothing better, not fame, not money or anything else , i see this and i see my girl and me,and in this dirty and sometimes ugly world, im on top of the world!!!! thanks for posting mate !!!!

  • This kinda sounds like Slim Whitman.

  • yes or frank ifeild.

  • I haven't hearrd this beautiful song in years. A nice homage to this couple.

  • I don't get it.

When he mentions "The man" he is refering to P{aul. Not many seem to beable to figure this out or even accept this to be so.

All of us in the know, know that Paul was affectionately known as "the man"

  • It is so hard to believe that Paul Newman is dead--he was so much a part of late 20th century American culture--oh how we all miss him. I love this song from 1970--I remember the first time I heard it on a late fall morning-it took my breath away. Great work, Mike!

  • Oh how I love this song! Mike Nesmith is such a gifted talent. Truly one of the pioneers of folk-rock. And pretty dang funny with his deadpan schtick when part of "The Monkees". THANKS for sharing this delightful "blast from the past" with us! :)

  • beautiful song by a gifed man, and the pictures in the vid are tribute to a great couple, great actor and a beautiful man

  • Brilliant song by a master, showcasing another master. A great tribute, very nicely done collage, good work man thank you.

  • Now THAT'S what I'm talkin' about! : )

  • I'm misty eyed. The song Joanne always put a lump in my throat but it even sadder with the passing of Paul Newman. Newman and Woodward had the right formula for a sucessful marrige. They got out of the Hollywood Babylon and lived like a normal married couple in Westport Connecticut.

  • Beautiful couple, beautiful song, beautiful photo collage.

  • Quite agree... nice work

  • This silver surfer rediscovered this track when researching "Rio." What an excellent musical song with good and for me, nostalgic lyrics.

BTW consequently downloaded "The Newer stuff" featuring these and other discovered song heard first time....

This old insomniac is listening now......

  • If for no other reason than writing this classic gem and the criminally under rated "Silver Moon" former Monkee Mike shouod find himself ensconced in the R&R Hall Of Fame! Plus, whoever processed the accompanying visuals starring Paul Newman and THE Joanne Woodward is a By God Genius! I will never tire of listening to this tune, and well, Paul and Joanne's devotion to one another speaks for itself, what a pair! Thanks as always to You Tube for the space, Michael the MAN, and:ROCK ON SHINDIGGERS!

  • @9erfandex I agree. Personally, I believe Mike had the best voice out of The Monkees. I love everything through the Monkees that he sung. However, The Monkees fullstop should be included in the R&R Hall of Fame. The fact that they've proved themselves to play their own instruments during and after the Monkees is something that R&R Hall of Fame should recognize. If we can recognize the fact, why can't they?

  • @MsDragon1968 Michael Nesmith had the best everything out of The Monkees, most of all talent, especially, songwriting!

  • @9erfandex excellent comments, thanks for saying it for the rest of us

  • Very nicely done!

  • I always come back to this video. The music and the pictures capture the simplicity of love. Really beautiful!

  • Great Video indeed...Tom Cruise cannot

hold a candle to this late great actor

    and philanthropist.

  • Not even Close,Where in Gods name did you even come up with such an insulting compare

  • I responded to a cable show about Tom Cruise that said Tom can act with the best

of them and suggested that he may have outperformed Newman in the movie

"The color of money". Like you Steve, I was outraged by such a ridiculous comparison, thanks for your feedback.

  • ya know, Mike has a dang voice....

  • They were an incredible match and a very strong couple. After losing my beloved husband 8 years ago, on September 11, 2001, I completely understand how it feels to be without a cherished spouse and companion. The pain, over time, becomes less severe, but it will never go away. You have created a beautiful tribute-nicely donel

  • @leadchick GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND.

  • @leadchick I have read your comment over and over. Sorry about your husband, companion. it never does go away. just gets easier to deal with in time...Beautiful song though, timeless..

  • They were so in love ....so in love this handsome couple........He was so gorgeous......and a great talent......Thank you Paul.......

  • Wonderful life.

  • how high did this get on the charts.i know it came out in sept 1970.

  • This song made it to #21, and it was on the charts for 21 weeks.

  • This is a beautiful song, and I'd never heard it before.

Well, now I'm off to listen to "Rodan."

  • this couple gave everyone in american some pride of how some of our celebrites can have a life of class and respect

  • Very moving. I sent this to a friend of mine that was good friend of Mr. Newmans. Thank you for posting.

  • This vid and song really warmed my heart. Thanks...
