you guys gotta be out of your mind thinking an auto slapshift whether it be paddles or toggle is anything less than a manual, do you know how fast new auto tranny's pop gears?, gone are the days of the oldschool shifts that take literally 2to3 seconds. i never would have sided with it till i owned a CVT split shift 4sp auto. why do you think ferrari audi porsche bmw vw lamborghini maserati honda toyota rolls benz bugatti alfa romeo volvo and every other manufacturer known to man offers it?
fuck anybody who thinks this is a stupid idea when its not. i have a srt jeep thats an auto and i bet ill bust any of your bithces with a 800 hp jeep thats and automatic but it you did beat me i won't complain and say i missed a gear like all you other fags do when i bust there ass ha go suck on that
Hardcore drivers like myself may hate this idea but this is a GOOD idea. Autos appeal to people who don't want to spend their time shifting. Subaru autos are damn near indestructible. There are more people in the world who drive automatic than people who drive stick. Subaru has had a habit of profiting during the right moments & it will undoubtedly profit heavily with this car.
THE WORST idea EVER!! I own a 2008 STi and i'm embarrassed by subaru's lack of thought presented here. Learn to drive a stick or get a goddamn mustang.
THE WORST idea EVER!! I own a 2008 STi and i'm embarrassed by subaru's lack of thought presented here. Learn to drive a stick or get a goddamn mustang.
ha. if u think all automatics suck look up the DSG system. two cars with it? GTI and Bugatti Veyron. 2 clutches. ones engaged, and one sets up ready to shift.
when i went to buy my 2010 camaro the dealer didnt have a single stick car on the lot..out of like 8 camaros and 10 corvettes...all automatic.i can see why tho automatics kick ass on a daily driving basis
This isn't true. An Automatic transmission was always available as an option when you bought an STI, but over 95% of all STI owners ordered their car with the manual transmission.
@SauceCaptain actually NO. It was never an OPTION except on the 04 WRX. The ONLY trim the STi came in was manual. And if you want a high performance automatic sports car because you can't handle the heat of a stick...I say go get a Mitsu Gay-vo X.
why does it matter its all about the person behind the wheel...what about all the high priced super cars...the gtr is auto...the lexus LFA is auto with the paddle shifters, shit the evo is auto to i think the mr version
@bmeyers1102 GTR is auto ONLY in the U.S. because it won't pass emissions otherwise. But there are still high end super cars that are manual...the CCX for one, R8, Maclaren...almost all the porches...you can't take two an use it in context.
I have been driving a stick for over 20 years, so I can drive any car out there.. but maybe some people want a DD with some power that is fun to drive, and don't want a stick shift in stop and go traffic. I drive 30 miles each way to work, and a stick for me would be brutal as a DD.. so calling people out as girls, or assuming they don't know how to drive a stick is ridiculous... The regular subaru Impreza hatch is a little bland looking..
@Highjak86 i am not a suby fan but if you've ever watched pro stock racing you'll see that they favor automatics for good reason. Nothing to do with being a pussy but they take the abuse and are more consistent for launching.
@NitroGadvRules whoa... I don't remember ever saying that automatics were "pussy". However, I did state that an automatic STI would be lame. Yes, automatic transmission cars are more consistent on a track... a drag track. I don't believe I have ever seen a STI in a "pro stock race", but I don't watch that much racing. Throughout the lifetime production of the STI I don't believe it has ever been sold with an automatic tranny. It has stuck true to the rally car style that STI fans enjoy.
I am a salesman for a Subaru Dealer. An automatic STI WON"T sell. People who want these cars need the 6-speed. Subaru had an automatic WRX at one point and they sat on our lot for years. This better not come to America.
As much as I absolutely HATE autos (I drive one & it's hell), this car is going to sell. Especially to all of the people who don't feel like shifting anymore or those who have health issues but money to blow. Honestly, an auto STi will make a more brutal launch than just about any 6 spd manual STi out there. It's probably going to be heavier though (handling WILL suffer). 6spd manual>auto STi IMO.
Eveyone here who is giving facts on how automatic is better , probbaly has an auto right in their garage. heres the facts. Who cares about the strip really? ooooo automatics are faster with non street legel cars o wow so fuckign amazing. Secondly you will get no respect on the street with an auto or at any enthusiast gathering. Automatics are fine for a dd but if your honestly into cars and race, your a poser driving a auto sorry just stating the truth
Well guys I tried the Subaru Legacy with automatic gear box (Sequential) and let me tell you that is another kind of experience this gear box is more much faster then the regular gear box (Mechanical giar box with the stick) so I think is gonna be the same in the STi.
Although there are Paddles on the new Legacy Auto trans, it is not Sequential, its a manual mode, regular auto. DSG SMG DCT PDK F1 are Sequentials, and very expensive , very special hi tech gearboxes and are more like manual than autos but shift incredibly fast. mechanically.
I got a automatic subaru and its great, the best part is after beating someone I just tell them its a AUTO and they just get embarrassed and burn there cars .
@ebeshlebe i live in big megapolis. i use clutch for 9999999 times a second because of VERY overloaded traffic. i'm fed up of pushing gearbox, clutch etc... am i gay??
i learned about this in school. the new GTI's have the auto which is faster than manual. the dual clutch is faster, when your pulling it outa gear while racing, the auto is already engaging the next gear and the advantage of them is that youll never miss a gear. but fuck auto, its sooo SHIT!! i want to feel the vibrations threw my hand, not be just flooring the gas, that's no fun.
Not all automatics are created equal. People seem to have real problems understand the difference between a conventional automatic, versus an SMG or DSG type setup.
@ethosflux I agree. I drove a 2007 VW R32 when I used to work at Volkswagen and the transmission performance is a blast. The thing is that no mater how well a Manual Gearbox outperforms a manual trans, A manual trans is more fun to drive and give's the driver a sense of engagement. So this is probably why so many people bash on a manual gearbox setup.
You guys do know some of the fastest cars are paddle shifters just look at the new gtr anyways who cares it's not like they're making you buy the automatics.
Auto vs manual? The debate continues! It really is a matter of PERSONAL PREFERENCE, but the choices nowadays boggle the mind! 2010 is right around the corner...is it really surprising? The 5 speed (short throw) manual in my 2003 Subaru WRX, imho, represents the most real driving experience and most fun, whether stuck in traffic or the open road.
It's all preference between drivers... The automatic car would be nice for daily driving and basic track days, but the M/T is still the obvious choice for many of us. The paddle shifters may be quick to shift, but launch times are horrifically slower compared to the M/T cars due to Subaru not incorporating any launch control into the automatic cars. For a true track or racing situation the M/T is still the obvious choice. Doesn't matter for us U.S guys anyways, its a JDM only option.
Forgive the double post, however I made a typo. Automated manual (which it should be, never again Auto on ANY performance car) ought to beat out a Manual straight line, being able to switch gears faster than human.
I know, I know, "But, n0boD kn b34t MY SH1FTinnnnnnnG!" ...Stop it.
Also, the plus is on the wrong side of the manual-mode.
lol i'd love to see a stock 6spd sti beat an stock auto sti on a road track... face it, the paddle shifters are more efficient so stop bashing on it keyboard warriors.
the subau clubb is a club strictly for those willing to do battle with any and everything on the road. The auto is like going into battle with a gun with no rounds when it comes to a subaru, its just plain unsavery
There is nothing wrong with subaru offering the sti with auto, i dont have anything against autos, autos are more comfortable but slower, manuals are less comfortable but faster and more controllable. I wouldnt mind driving an automatic car, but it wouldnt be an Sti, if you are buying an Sti it MUST be bought manual. The Sti is a pure racer, if you are a fan of automatic transmissions buy another automatic car, not the sti
It's good to know that people relate paddle shifting with rich people. I can think of plenty of other cars that rich spoiled kids would rather get (and could get).
Formula One is Automatic....manual transmissions are on the way out. Porsche has an all new PDK 7 speed auto that is faster than any human leg/arm combo, and you get to keep both hands on the wheel. Anyone that thinks you can have more control of the car with a manual is living in the 20th century. Transmissions like this are already making their way to the masses...you just keep on replacing clutches Emo
The tiptronic mode for the +/- gate is forward to upshift and pull back to downshift?? They could have at least done it the correct and more natural way. Forward to DOWNSHIFT and pull back to UPSHIFT. Not the other way around.
Ok the way I described is a more natural way to many other drivers. The forward/downshift, back/upshift seems more logical to me, and it's counterintuitive to be the other way. However everyone has their own opinion on the preferred movement of the shifter. And not all sequential transmissions are like that. This is not to be confused with a sequential manual, it just duplicates the shift lever motion. It's still an auto, it still has a torque converter, therefore doesn't shift as quickly.
Oh but I forgot, you know "everything" about cars. And you want to call someone a retard when you have a Lil Wayne video as one of your favorites.... ha ha ha!
The Evo sst is faster than the manual. Also if auto's are shit then why do all the top performance cars have autos? I am talking about paddle shifting Ferrari's, Lambo's, Audi's, Mercedes etc... Most drag racers use auto's as well. A human is inconsistent when shifting but an auto is perfect every time.
theres different types of "automatic" transmissions out there. some are slow, some are very quick. you run into problems over heating some of the auto trannies on the track too. drag races are fine because its a few seconds at a time. if you take it on a track, it gets HOT. and yes, the SST in the Evo does overheat on the track.
i know a guy who was looking forward to this, not becos he's lousy and not good at manual. but its becos he's slightly disabled in the legs and cant use it for the clutch. there are guys out there who loves cars and cant drive em cos of the manual, altho its a small percentage, i believe we shouldnt flame this car just becos it has an auto...
thats true. just because you can drive a stick doesnt mean you only deserve to get the car. STi is a hot car. so people less fortunate should get a chance to drive it as well
Per cent? It's one word. You mean 90 percent. Good effort, you steped up to the plate and missed. It's ok though, your mom will always be proud of you.
Calm down dude. In Britain "per cent" is often used instead of "percent". After all, it IS a compound word "per" meaning for every, and "cent" meaning hundredth. It's too bad your mom doesn't feel the same way.
People who think the ONLY way to TRULY appreciate a car is if you drive a manual; they thumb their noses at "slushboxes," and think that driving an automatic is somehow emasculating. So basically 90 per cent of the automotive press and people who follow car culture!
? well manuals if you want to race are better then automatics because the ability to downshift. which is why when you push the gas of a automatic the option for the car to go quicker would be to downshift but...you cant because its an auto. my first car was a 07 impreza auto. i loved it but if you want an easier more better way then get a stick
what a shitty idea, ive seen many automatice wrx's on ebay and they go for buttons, for the folk that cant drive a manual how on earth are they going to handle a motor way 300bhp
there was a white turbo uk down my way that was only up for £300,an automatic non turbo or an auto wrx is a good idea, but the sti is a racer and your spoiling it
Yes it a good IDEA and i do agree that the car should be more branched out because it is a GREAT car. However to me it is one of the last of the best. I believe that if they do put auto into production that it defeats the purpose of the car being a TRUE rally car. I was disappointed when the EVO X was "AUTO-IZED" so i think that the STi will keep a true racing edge over the EVO and other cars if it remains manual. Plus it gives 16 year-old posers a chance to never learn to drive a real rally car
Im not agree with you. In busy streets (especially rushours) automatic rulz. Mechanic is good just for streetracers who are by the way shitty racers he;)
For some odd reason, this thing reminds me of an idea from a buddy of mine to stick a older GC8 Impreza turbo drivetrain onto an old EG6 civic...one of the most time consuming projects I have seen anyone attempt, but the results were pretty good, AWD, turbo power, combined with a reinforced lightweight chassis from a civic. It performed quite well at willowsprings.
auto transmissions ARE used in races. drag to scca. if its a good transmission it should be able to launch pretty well, faster than alot of people can shift out of low gears.
you just loose alot of that control over your rpms. but with the right computer (like my buddies automatic camaro that runs low 10's) you dont have to worry about that in some cases either.
NOT ALWAYS. so dont bitch at me, there are races that require a manual trans for more control.
i agree that a manual gear box is way better in race driving and you should be real good to master it (fast shifting before corners and balancing the car through corners by "playing" with the gas and clutch pedals) but if it is a double-clutch gear box and it is as good as the one BMW uses on the new M3 the driving could be better and fun and exciting should stay as they are
Blame it on drivers of today. Some people just refuse to learn manual. A lot of supercars are made with automatic/paddles because the rich people who buy them don't even know what a clutch is. They just want to show off.
no it's dead cause it's as pretty as a 50 year old's bottom and.... yea, pretty much everything. but yea, it's all business they don't care about killing it for ppl that demand it only come in manual as long as they make more money selling it to people who don't care

ReaKtionary 2 years ago
lol i'd love to see a stock 6spd sti beat an stock auto sti on a road track... face it, the paddle shifters are more efficient so stop bashing on it keyboard warriors.

the subau clubb is a club strictly for those willing to do battle with any and everything on the road. The auto is like going into battle with a gun with no rounds when it comes to a subaru, its just plain unsavery
buddyboyzarapper 2 years ago
There is nothing wrong with subaru offering the sti with auto, i dont have anything against autos, autos are more comfortable but slower, manuals are less comfortable but faster and more controllable. I wouldnt mind driving an automatic car, but it wouldnt be an Sti, if you are buying an Sti it MUST be bought manual. The Sti is a pure racer, if you are a fan of automatic transmissions buy another automatic car, not the sti

what is this world coming to!!!! no no no no if they do this it just means that a bunch of rich spoiled kids are going to be driving these now! FUCK
infinitgang 2 years ago
It's good to know that people relate paddle shifting with rich people. I can think of plenty of other cars that rich spoiled kids would rather get (and could get).

hope this isnt coming to the us please dont ship them here send them to mexico or just push them off the ship and just bring the manuals

God, please don't let it come to the U.S. market.

Transmissions like this are already making their way to the masses...you just keep on replacing clutches Emo
run371 2 years ago 3
dumbass formula one isnt automatic, its a hydraulically shifted sequential manual transmission. research before you comment
hammondsplains 2 years ago
why for first time ever? there are automatic STI's already (earlier models)

those are wrx's the older wrxs come with auto and manual but STI's always come manual
rustler001 2 years ago
that makes me mad, cause ill see a bunch of stupid fuckers who dont know how to drive, driving these beautiful machines
hammondsplains 2 years ago
The tiptronic mode for the +/- gate is forward to upshift and pull back to downshift?? They could have at least done it the correct and more natural way. Forward to DOWNSHIFT and pull back to UPSHIFT. Not the other way around.
adogg619 2 years ago
your an idiot that is how a true sequential trans is , forward to go up a gear and back to go down a gear, your just a retard
hammondsplains 2 years ago
Ok the way I described is a more natural way to many other drivers. The forward/downshift, back/upshift seems more logical to me, and it's counterintuitive to be the other way. However everyone has their own opinion on the preferred movement of the shifter. And not all sequential transmissions are like that. This is not to be confused with a sequential manual, it just duplicates the shift lever motion. It's still an auto, it still has a torque converter, therefore doesn't shift as quickly.
adogg619 2 years ago
Oh but I forgot, you know "everything" about cars. And you want to call someone a retard when you have a Lil Wayne video as one of your favorites.... ha ha ha!

The Evo sst is faster than the manual. Also if auto's are shit then why do all the top performance cars have autos? I am talking about paddle shifting Ferrari's, Lambo's, Audi's, Mercedes etc... Most drag racers use auto's as well. A human is inconsistent when shifting but an auto is perfect every time.
smercer1000 2 years ago
theres different types of "automatic" transmissions out there. some are slow, some are very quick. you run into problems over heating some of the auto trannies on the track too. drag races are fine because its a few seconds at a time. if you take it on a track, it gets HOT. and yes, the SST in the Evo does overheat on the track.
Evo2nr90 2 years ago
true but you'd have more control with a maunal.(power sliding or 180s)
damnyou1888 2 years ago
id get the auto, shifting gears gets anoying after a while but wit a auto or dual clutch yu can do both and have faster shifts

i know a guy who was looking forward to this, not becos he's lousy and not good at manual. but its becos he's slightly disabled in the legs and cant use it for the clutch. there are guys out there who loves cars and cant drive em cos of the manual, altho its a small percentage, i believe we shouldnt flame this car just becos it has an auto...
violancers 2 years ago
thats true. just because you can drive a stick doesnt mean you only deserve to get the car. STi is a hot car. so people less fortunate should get a chance to drive it as well
ScoobyImpreza17 2 years ago
wtf, how can they give the sti an auto transmission, hope they dont bring them to the states.
subarufreak555 2 years ago
Per cent? It's one word. You mean 90 percent. Good effort, you steped up to the plate and missed. It's ok though, your mom will always be proud of you.
GirSolo 2 years ago
Calm down dude. In Britain "per cent" is often used instead of "percent". After all, it IS a compound word "per" meaning for every, and "cent" meaning hundredth. It's too bad your mom doesn't feel the same way.
eclipsetmz 2 years ago
If this is not a dual clutch transmission then this is a joke. Wouldn't be so bad if it was dual clutch though. I have a GTI w/ DSG and I love it.

Freaking manual snobs bother me.
greenblueprints 2 years ago
manual snobs? what does that mean?
PiercingTruth 2 years ago
People who think the ONLY way to TRULY appreciate a car is if you drive a manual; they thumb their noses at "slushboxes," and think that driving an automatic is somehow emasculating. So basically 90 per cent of the automotive press and people who follow car culture!
greenblueprints 2 years ago
? well manuals if you want to race are better then automatics because the ability to downshift. which is why when you push the gas of a automatic the option for the car to go quicker would be to downshift but...you cant because its an auto. my first car was a 07 impreza auto. i loved it but if you want an easier more better way then get a stick
ScoobyImpreza17 2 years ago
you also loose 20% bhp with a automatic
CVRealMan 2 years ago
oh i didnt know that. but i see how it cud make sense
ScoobyImpreza17 2 years ago
its 15 to 20 percent when the torque converter is not locked
CVRealMan 2 years ago
but driving a manual IS more fun and yes we are manual "snobs" when comes to pure enjoyment of actually driving a car... not the CAR driving YOU.
so fuck off and go buy an automatic hummer or some bllshit.

this is almost as dissapointing as the evo wagon...:(
MixtapeSkippy 2 years ago 2
what a shitty idea, ive seen many automatice wrx's on ebay and they go for buttons, for the folk that cant drive a manual how on earth are they going to handle a motor way 300bhp
there was a white turbo uk down my way that was only up for £300,an automatic non turbo or an auto wrx is a good idea, but the sti is a racer and your spoiling it
:(
v2scoobystiwagon 2 years ago
Yes it a good IDEA and i do agree that the car should be more branched out because it is a GREAT car. However to me it is one of the last of the best. I believe that if they do put auto into production that it defeats the purpose of the car being a TRUE rally car. I was disappointed when the EVO X was "AUTO-IZED" so i think that the STi will keep a true racing edge over the EVO and other cars if it remains manual. Plus it gives 16 year-old posers a chance to never learn to drive a real rally car
Esags21 2 years ago
simple automatic transmission? ....it`s a shame comparing to EVO`s SST-TC

Im not agree with you. In busy streets (especially rushours) automatic rulz. Mechanic is good just for streetracers who are by the way shitty racers he;)
YMastersWRC 2 years ago
that STi is weird because the brake on the car doesn't look like Brembo or STi signature 4 piston brake, it's look like a normal WRX brake.
tldkny 2 years ago
For some odd reason, this thing reminds me of an idea from a buddy of mine to stick a older GC8 Impreza turbo drivetrain onto an old EG6 civic...one of the most time consuming projects I have seen anyone attempt, but the results were pretty good, AWD, turbo power, combined with a reinforced lightweight chassis from a civic. It performed quite well at willowsprings.

fast shifting tranny for US,Canada
GTRnev8820 2 years ago
auto transmissions ARE used in races. drag to scca. if its a good transmission it should be able to launch pretty well, faster than alot of people can shift out of low gears.
you just loose alot of that control over your rpms. but with the right computer (like my buddies automatic camaro that runs low 10's) you dont have to worry about that in some cases either.
NOT ALWAYS. so dont bitch at me, there are races that require a manual trans for more control.
lepexi 2 years ago 4
eg: VW R32 or any DSG for that matter
CHICAGOnigg 2 years ago
i agree that a manual gear box is way better in race driving and you should be real good to master it (fast shifting before corners and balancing the car through corners by "playing" with the gas and clutch pedals) but if it is a double-clutch gear box and it is as good as the one BMW uses on the new M3 the driving could be better and fun and exciting should stay as they are

HatenSuffering 2 years ago
Blame it on drivers of today. Some people just refuse to learn manual. A lot of supercars are made with automatic/paddles because the rich people who buy them don't even know what a clutch is. They just want to show off.
limebread 2 years ago
Its dead because they have a SINGLE STi model with an automatic transmission in ONE country???
Wow.
xt6wagon 2 years ago
no it's dead cause it's as pretty as a 50 year old's bottom and.... yea, pretty much everything. but yea, it's all business they don't care about killing it for ppl that demand it only come in manual as long as they make more money selling it to people who don't care

i love stick. but on traffic its a killer. maybe paddle shifter is not that bad. but still prefer a manual.
