Earlier this summer I was in the backyard and this wild juvenile European starling was sitting on the fence just looking around. I decided to see how close I could get and walked slowly up to it. I was expecting it to fly away as soon as it saw me moving towards it, but it didn't. I ventured closer and it still didn't fly away. When I was literally right next to it, I slowly put my hand up and when it jumped onto my finger, I was shocked.
First of all, I love your starlings. Also I have a small question, with names like Neelix, Damar, and Dukot are you a Star Trek fan? I just thought it was amusing, and I would probably name my pets similar names. x3
I have 4 starlings total. Malutka was my first, she will be 5 years old in April as will Damar and Dukot (in July). I feed them a specific dog food based diet found on Starling Talk . com as well as Mazuri Insectivore Diet I order online. They have to have a specific diet to ensure a full and happy life.
Wow, what a drama! Poor Pom-Pom--seems like she's suffering from unrequited love! That was scary, when she attacked Dukot. if "she" were a male, I don't think she'd be attacking, but wing-waving and trying to impress Dukot with her gorgeous nest. Is she still all alone in the other room? Thanks for sending this video to me--I loved it, and my cats were fascinated by all the starling sounds--all they ever hear at home is Beakie speaking English!
We are going to get Pommy DNA sexed so we know for sure what sex she is. People tell me male because the hackle feathers are long and she is building a nest, but the base of her yellow beak is pink and she has a ligh grey ring around her eye, indicating female. But no, Pommy is NEVER alone. When we leave home, Pommy stays in the bedroom with Malutka, our first starling, Scooter the duck, Coco the duck, Walela the duck and Que, the rooster. Now poor Pommy spends most days sleeping.
I never bothered getting Beakie sexed. She started that wing-waving thing male starlings do, then made a nest by stripping my grape ivy and putting the leaves in the back of a drawer. She asked me to marry her by flying repeatedly into my hair and back to the "nest."! We think "she" is a boy! We got used to saying "she" and it was too late to change.
Is Pommy okay? Beak slept all day when she had citticosis, but recovered with a series of shots. You might want to get blood tests done.
Love the video! A few very familiar scenes! We have not used a nest box but the birds have gotten possessive of certain "spots" before (usually shelves with pretty things on them). Loved the time-out too because that's exactly what we do with Kiddo when he's mean to Buddy! Hope they worked it out, thanks for the video response!
Oh yes, mine are possessive as well. We have a fake fikus tree in the bedroom that all 4 of them would sleep in. Now Malutka took over the tree and the other three better not get anywhere NEAR that tree or they get it. I swear, it's a WHOLE TREE, she doesn't need the whole thing to herself. LOL
Not Pommy, she has had this problem since she was a baby. She has neurological problems and almost died at 3 weeks old. She couldn't even stand up. Our vet thought for sure she would die and she must have hit her head hard when she fell out of the nest.
Some people suggested Pom-Pom is actually a male and is trying to gain Dukots attention. So I'm going to have her DNA sexed to find out once and for all. Stay tuned...

Fighting over a nest box, how many starlings to do have? And what do you feed them in rotation?
