Oh no, you did what I feared most, you only reproduced the voice part for the aria even though the interest is the fugue it forms with the string parts, back to the camera to get the other parts, and better yet an open score!
@b0ttomzone I don't see any connection. The phrygian cadence is usually associated with question marks, and with expressions of uncertainty. I would say that in this particular passage, it has no special significance; it's just another form of half cadence.
@Timrath Well the word painting in the recitative is pretty obvious. Every cadence seems to be associated with something. Maybe the phrygian cadence seriously questions (doubts) the sinner's entry into Heaven.
Personally, I prefer Glenn Gould's version. I think the tempo is too fast to deliver all the richness and deepness of Bach's music. Especially in the recitative part - I loved how well Gould used the continuo to illustrate the "sharpened sword that pierces our body", and the major chord of "pure gold". I think they did that part not so well in this version, but that's only my opinion, I realise that's a matter of taste.

Notice the word painting on "Gottes Reich" at around 0:53. Was it common to associate God and Heaven with phrygian cadences?

@b0ttomzone You won't find many Phrygian cadences in the Baroque outside of Bach. He was the Stravinsky of his time.
