Hmm wonder why there isn't an official version of this somewhere. Non the less, great blast from the past. Wonderful song, my fav Dirt Band tune by far. Love the 80's garb!! Wow did we really dress like that? Guess we did. HA!!
we all need to remember noone ever said life was gonna be easy, yet it seems those of us with no piles of money and living the simple life know the important things in life...the love of family and friends and the importance of standing behind your promises, this song says it all thanks for sharing
Seeing all the comments of what this songs means daddy was born in 1936 in West VIrginia and loved this song and always talked about how this made him think of his homeplace, he passed away in 2007 thanks very much for posting this
I have to admit, the version on my iPod and CDs are 10x better, but regardless, this is without a doubt my favorite Nitty Gritty Dirt Band song. Thanks for the upload. Love this song.
@Weebler00 Yes, the audio is pretty grim isn't it. My only excuse is that It was awful when I first recorded it ................ but I dont have the experise to do anything about that. Pleased you liked the posting though.
@david245 This is the first time I heard the ending! I didn't hear the ending part when I last heard it on the radio before the next song came on the air, and I remember it was Alabama singing "Tennessee River" right after the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band sang their hits, "The Long Hard Road". I love this video! Well done!
Yes I did edwoodtwo. He's pretty awesome hard country and very underrated unfortunately...everyones loss.
And how about the NGDB boys with the trio albums "Will The Circle Be Unbroken", bringing country back together before Garth could do it!
God bless George Strait, Randy Travis, Clint Black, Alan Jackson, Rodney Crowell, Garth Brooks, and NGDB...along with Bob Wills, Ernest Tubb, Bill Monroe, Porter Waggoner, and for good measure...Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Two.
To me this is real Country Music.Coal Miners, share croppers and the depression. the tridition and the foundation.
Nashville you have lost every bit of tridition. you have forgot where Country Music began look at the hard calased hand of the man, do you see the coat of many colors on the child or the dress she made for herself or the hand me downs?
@taariqq not on u tube but i have one of the original performances on dvd and it is absoluttly brilliant taped about thirty years ago its wonderful version
@IcKeYsGhOsT I hate to break it to but work is all that matters... Easy or hard... It doesn't matter as long as it makes a dollar... The dollar is what makes life grand... Not God... God just created the universe and set it free to do whatever... I spent many years praying and getting nothing from it... When I decided to better myself and quit praying... Life got better for me... I acknowledge God but I do not worship anything... Including him... That's my life and I don't regret it...
@mirk1500 Good for you, but I believe that your prayers were answered. You just had to your part. Just my opinion not trying to offend you. Good luck and keep doing what you are doing it seems to be working.
now this is music i grew up listening to this song.... every time we jumped in the truck we cranked this up and sang it loud. every song on this record if you listen has a story or meaning
I saw them in Dublin about 15 years ago and met the band afterwards. It turns out that most of them have ancestors from Co.Antrim N Ireland and they were very interested in knowing where certain towns and villages were. Randalstown, Ahoghill and Doagh in particular.
Talk about bring back memories! I remember the old 8 track tapes listening to them. Am I wrong, but didnt they have a song titled something like "Mother Of Love"? Where can I find it? Thanks all! USA! USA!
This is the first song that I learned to play by memory. Now when I perform, I always play at least 1 or 2 Dirt Band tunes. They are my favorite band of all time. I have been listening to them since '70 and their music has helped me through some dark times. My dream is to someday meet them.
My parents used to play NGDB on long road trips when I was a kid. This was always one of my favs...it's always had a place in my heart and a ton of meaning for me. Thanks for posting it!
NGDB was in Norway last year, so nice to see them! I missed Jimmy Ibbotson though, in my opinion he is (was) much of NGDB's vice and spirit. John McEuen had a workshop, and I was of course there. Wow, that man can play. It was really fun to see him. Videotaped it all.
The NGDB used to do concerts at the high school gym in Alamosa CO, such great memories. I'll never forget being introduced to Jeff Hannah and not being able to breathe ...youthful folly. He was so cute.
when my grandma and grandpa were alive we never went hungry, they came thru 2 world wars, korea and how many other kinds of hell, and all their sons came home, but once they died and my brother and i were left alone with our mother, we were hungry all the time, go fucking figure...
The NGDB version of the Rodney Crowell classic, "It's A Long Hard Road". Great performances, reminds me of my childhood in the hills of West Virginia, although it was stripping tobacco, not cotton balls we did, and they are both awful, mind-numbing, back-breaking work.
I'm going to their concert in October in Missouri. Wildwood Springs Lodge has them most every year. You can get tickets on the Lodge's website. It's like they're playing in your living room!
Mowing yards, racking leaves, hauled hay, worked cattle, left home at 18, 5 yrs of college but didn't get along with big business! 34 yrs later and 6 trades, still working with my hands, back aches somedays but it sure feels good to lie down tired! Worked my way around the country twice, 600k miles worth since then. It was a long hard road!
