I think this is an incredibly dangerous way to rough out a segmented turning . Cutting the outside of the segments round on a bandsaw does not take that long. I often turn segmented pieces of wood up to 5 foot diameter and ALWAYS cut them round where they will be turned. Large turnings can be dangerous at the best of times without the added danger of a chainsaw at face level
Love the work. I cannot stop thinking about the segments and how I will be building them. I am going to be turning much smaller pieces but it is fantastic to know that I don't have to find a bigger stump to make a bigger piece.
Wow, how proud any one would be to have work like this. I have several small pieces that an elderly gentleman made years ago. Such skill and thank you for posting this one.
don't get me wrong I love the finished product its really really incredible. but the steps you take to get to it are incredibly dangerous and I think its irresponsible to post this and not provide a warning. uninformed people don't realize the dangers of merely turning wood that big much less using a chainsaw to rough it out. hope all goes well with your endeavors.
this is really cool... i think about the only other thing you could do to make it any better is to figure out a way to support the turning without the tailstock so you can hollow it out and thin the walls. that would be truely remarkable if you could solve that little engineering problem.
perhaps a multi-point roller setup, like the rests for metal lathes when working with long, thin pieces. hmm... i got myself thinking now. haha.
Very creative. Would have been nice to see how you cut the door
