Don't forget to check for wind tabs. This technique will not work if they are present. Also, don't expect slats to slide out so easily on a door that has been there for a few decades. This all goes back to knowing your area.
A friend had to deal with one of these at a grocery store fire a couple of years ago. They had a fork lift behind the store and so he drove that into the door, ramming the tines of the fork into the door and then lifted. That popped the security locks.
you dont want to take out the whole section like that cuz then the door could slide down. then you will find yoour self trapped if it happins. so only do half of one side that way half of the door is on the ground. be like a door on 1 side. so cut just one side or cut an (a) pattern in the middle of the door.
Brilliant - I had no idea that each section of the roll up is able to slide out from the others.. Great idea, especially since it CUTS (no pun intended) down on time. Great work...
im a professional door service tech this vid is good i love seeing more work for me, be sure to stay off to the side of the door way when pulling slats if the door has no operator the loss of weight on the spring tube will cause the door to go up unwind and possibly come back down rapidly
As you stated before, we don't have the luxury of having the door raised so the angle-iron can be cut, but you answered that in a previous post.
The "triangle" only opens a fraction of what this cut or the "Curtain Cut" will open. I am not a fan of the "triangle".
My only concern with this gate is if there are clips on either side holding the slats together, as found in my area. Those pins will not allow you to pull the slats to enlarge the opening. Those pins are why I use the Curtain Cut.
Try burying the pike of the halligan first and let it hang there, then go ahead and make your saw cuts. If you take your halligan swing after making your saw cuts there is less resistance in the gate and it is harder to penetrate the pike.
my only problem with doing it this way is; the door can still roll down on top of persons, or hoses...i prefer the triangle cut on roll-ups like these
rebelsoldier3,i don't know if your LAFD or not but we tend to steer away from what is also known as the "tee-pee" cut, due to the fact that the height of the triangle cut is the heighth of the average man, which in this case only allows for one man in or one man out. This cut, or the traditional "square cut" is what is preferred. The door generally rolls up do to the weight loss. This was taught to us by the late, great, forcible entry GURU,
the door cant roll down more im an installer of these and if you remove wieght the door is gonna go up even with a motor the limit switch are gonna stop it...!
my captian was trying to explian this technique to me earlier this week and i dint really understand what the hell he was saying... this video was very helpfull..cant wait to use it on scene...
No it doesn't. Actually this was one of the last doors at this site that we cut and the T-bar (bottom base bar) was removed. Just cut it as you see casey cut it in the video and when you get to the bottom you'll hit the T-bar. You can clear the slats above the bar and then go back and cut the T-bar out and remove it. You''ll have gained access but the T-bar is a tripping hazard.
Remember What the goal is? To gain access! Safely. So If you can't remove the T-bar it is still ok! you'll still have a nice big hole for access with one cut. You'll just have to step over the bar. Just be careful of sharp edges when advancing the hose. like breaking a window if you can clear it do it. Be safe and Thanks for the question.
Fuck you door!

also the door can roll down or fall down after enough heat. thats why you should just cut the (A) pattern in the middle of door

I prefer to use the triangle method cause it would be pretty safer than square, the pieces may fall out and hurt you

How come these no spark when cutting tat gate ?
I always got abit of this problem when handle a power saw to metal .
kinkdu 4 years ago
The sparks are there it is just film in bright sun light so you don't see them. Stand to the side but they are hard to avoid. Watch you eyes.
MarcLucero 4 years ago
I noticed the bottom of the door is raised on this film and on the fire film, does the bottom have to be raised inorder for this to work?
