Thank you for posting an excellent video. Our dog was diagnosed yesterday with FCE. It was as devastating for us, as it is for our dog. Obviously in the immediate hours following the incident we imagine the worse, but yours, and others, videos has given us bucket loads of hope. Thank you
On July 19th, 2011 after a series of grand mal seizures, we had to say goodbye to Max. Max will be greatly missed.
His seizures progressed from monthly, to weekly, to daily, to just 10 hours apart over the course of several months. His first seizures were triggered by Propalin, an incontinence drug, and the theory is that an underlying neurological issue was to blame.
Our vet made a donation to the Ontario Veterinary College Pet Trust (pettrust.ca) at the University of Guelph in his honor.
My dog Shadow collapsed last evening, while chasing a ball, and had a severe dog FCE. After a sleepless night, I was so down today. Seeing my beloved very active baby (Shadow is only two years old) can’t lift himself and so helpless brought tears to my eyes.
Watching the video you uploaded really gave me hope and lifted my spirit. Thanks for sharing your experience and the process of Max heeling.
Max is now 12 years old, and doing well. He gets his heart meds (Norvasc + Fortekor) every morning, urine pH altering pills (Vitamin B6 + Potassium Citrate) 2x per day, and the usual shots, checkups, etc. regularly. He was briefly on a drug for incontinence this year, but that triggered two grand-mal seizures within 8hrs and we took him off that after a stay in the ER. No more FCE type episodes, but the seizures were something new that we're keeping an eye on. Still plays like a puppy!
Max didn't have an MRI, the vets told us it could only rule out other possibilities and not confirm FCE (only an autopsy can 100% confirm FCE). He's doing well, slightly weaker in the hind legs but he gets around without tipping over too much - just the occasional wobble on hardwood or other slick surfaces.
Thanks for the question, happy to answer whatever we can.
This gives me so much hope. I came home yesterday to find my dog greeting me at the door & dragging his back legs behind him. I rushed him to Med Vet & they are pretty certain that he had an FCE. I'm waiting to see a neurologist next week... I'm so terrified that my bubby is not going to be able to walk again. Or roll around in the grass, joyously like Max! That jacket looks very helpful- I may get one!! Did Max have any treatment???
Remarkable recovery. Max looks great. Thanks for sharing. My Lab had an FCE two years ago. This is a tough experience to go through, but how wonderful when the outcome is good.
