Both Pat and Dinah were sponsored by Chevrolet at the time [he was on Thursdays starring in the "CHEVY SHOWROOM" on ABC; Dinah, of course, with her Sunday night "CHEVY SHOW" over NBC]. This "summit" of two hosts pitching for the same sponsor was not uncommon; Garry Moore and Bob Cummings both starred in a Winston cigarette commercial around 1957 {Garry's "I'VE GOT A SECRET" and "THE BOB CUMMINGS SHOW" shared the same sponsor as well}.
Those fifties and early sixties cars had style. But they were not very reliable. They required a lot of maintenance, constant tune-ups, brake realignments, and something always needed repair. Plus they rusted out if you lived in a northern climate where they put salt down to save lives--a worthwile tradeoff. Cars are much better today--they are just not as striking and only the more expensive ones have any real personality or looks.
i wont i will not be using American cars my whole life ... i dont care if we lose job ,, just look for yourself buddy which makes you feel better ....spending money for car is big money !! then why to buy trash !! like american cars...
American cars are once again high quality. If you have never driven one how can you say that. Plus, if enough people keep with your attitude, there will be no America. God Bless America!! Go McCain. Country First
hondas are a little bit more reliable, although the quality gap is getting smaller, but looking at a honda makes me want to shoot myself, they lack the slightest bit of personality. o btw the only reason gm is failing is the economy. gm was in the process of fixing its losses from the 80's and 90's, but it was catching up to japanese automakers.
My Dad bought a 1959 Biscayne(the cheapest model)2-door sedan for $1,800.00. It had the High Thrift 6(230 cubic inch)engine, and "3 on the tree", with electric overdrive. That 2 ton space ship was smooth as silk at 100 mph, and got 24 mpg on the highway, with bias ply tires. My Mom got it in the divorce. I'd love to have it now.
We had the '59 Brookwood ,2 door wagon,3-on-tree, 6 passenger, without overdrive. Got it used in 1967, and it served our family of 9 for 10 years- faithfully! What I wouldn't give to have it now. Oh, our tires? All(brand, not size) mismatched- whatever we could get used from the auto salvage yard!
le 1959 est un modèle extraordinaire, qui se démarque nettement de ce qui s'est fait avant ou après. Malheureusement on ne voit presque pas le véhicule.
Dinah Shore did "The See The USA in A Chevrolet" in which she altered the lyrics to "See Ellis Brooks Today for your Chevrolet". Jingle still plays in San Francisco after all these years. Also where are Pat Boone's White Buck shoes?
We look back with nostalgia. It was a special time, we were fat, dumb & happy. My dad had a '59 Impala. What a POS. Rusted like crazy. Years later a friend a friend had a '64 Impala. You had to place an order weeks ahead to let the brakes know your intention. Don't get me wrong, I love these cars, but compared to what we drive today, no comparison.
There is no way any one will care about a Honda in 50 years time. Old american cars will always have a following. The styling was outrageous and they were built to last. Modern cars have bland styling (with a few exceptions) and are only made to last a few years.
I love love American cars of the 50s 60s. While they were built well... I don't think they were built to last. For one, they rusted in just a few years. I think the thinking back was then was to have them last a few years so people would trade them in for new models. I think the cars today are more reliable and don't break down as much.

That is no way to advertise, no indication of how safe the car was, no background of it's capabilities, they simply say "Oh, it's a good car, and it's pretty, just buy it" GM must of payed a hell of a lot to get pat boone and dinah shore on this commercial. To be honest, I'm not materialistic about cars, and I'm not swayed by style, plus I'd prefer anything but an American car anyway, probably a Toyota Hybrid
Subliminal advertising my tailbone, This is all about how women of the 1950's could hop around a soundstage while wearing about 80 yards of nylon petticoats, and keep up with their partners, while all the not being able to see their feet!!!
You people do your homework! Buyers apparently DID think it was beautiful, the styling was NOT a flop, as GM sold nearly 1.5 MILLION full-size Chevrolets in 1959.
"Subliminal" messages can be seen, heard and smelled. Seeing a celebrity you admire using a product, even if that product's name is never mentioned, is a subliminal message. That's why companies make sure that new products get into the hands of as many celebrities as possible -- so they're SEEN. Hearing a certain song in a commercial is a subliminal message. Restaurants venting the yummy smells from their kitchens out to the street to get people to come in? Subliminal again.
Very charming woman. And she looks tremendous in that gown!!

is there supposed to say a subliminal message in this

Why is it that in the 50s they believed that every commercial had to have a jingle to go along with it?

i would never buy a non-american car(even though most ameican cars are made in canada and mexico today)
i would take a pile of shit 71 chevy vega wagon over a 91 honda civic with out even thinking about it and im only 18
fuck those rice burners
MakeLoveNotWar617 3 years ago 5
Why the Vega, the worst American car ever built? A Pinto was way better.

This is 1958 because they mention October 16 and by that time in 1959, 1960 models would be what's wanted.
Carmaker1 3 years ago
If you look at the first "subliminal picture", they showed a 1959 (tear-drop tail lamps), so it had to have been a 1958 commercial.

The '59 Chevy was one of the ugliest ever built. They finally cleaned up the styling by '61.

For the love of pete, it was 1959! Nobody cared nearly as much about safety...even the seat belts were and add-on option! :)

Yeah I had one back in '62. Great car, great styling. It was the last of 'finned' cars, much sleeker in appearance than it's rocketship predecessors.
