One day i'm going to go to brighton and just walk around in a 30s fashioned suit with a little wooden ukulele in one hand and breifcase in the other :D
George Formby was absolutely brilliant and entertained a nation, with his innuendo, which was, and still is excellent. I am amazed that no-one has has taken on the challenge of bringing this Great Man and his life story to film. Perhaps they can`t find anybody to replace him. That`s understandable. What a talent.
Thanks for posting this great song and nice footage from a 1930s U.S. film with Buster Keaton. Wonderful artist too. Buster never smiled in his films but wound up in all kinds of situations. (His most well known film was "The General" which portrayed him as a steam locomotive engineer and was set during the U.S. civil war).
Are there any experts out there....I think there is something wrong with my ukelele - if i take it in hand , and polish it nice and hard, it turms into a double bass???
Don't slam classic Blues music, fella! Besides, I think Formby's as fun, enjoyable and inventive as Django or Big Bill Broonzy! If you mean MODERN Hip Hop, Rap and such, then yes...hands down...
don't know which film its in but, watch all goerges films, all loverly seewt natured and funny, and the lyrics dirty as a your old mums coal scuttle, i think goerge would have liked that line, if your watchin the films start with tt races, its the funniest from meomory
I remember Joe's version of that, brilliant. I think he changed one word, instead of saying he had his ukelele in his hand, I think he said a ukelele in his hand, I may be wrong. Even so it didn't please the stuffy BBC who also banned a Kinks song that had bum in it - oh the depravity.
I have a baritone

It's "Steamboat Bill, Jr." by Buster Keaton in 1928

Indeed it is. I'm not sure whether Buster was ever famous for his Uke skills though...

he wasn't famous for his ukulele skills - but he still played the ukulele. Which is good enough for me!

When Joe Brown recorded this song in the so-called "Swinging Sixties" The BBC banned it, even though he merely copied George's version word for word!
