The previous hero from Oblivion still lives in Skyrim. It's kinda revealed in one side quest where you meet Sheogorath who implies that he is the Champion of Cyrodiil. Small quote "The title is passed down from me to me." He also speaks about butterflies, a Fox, severed head and cheese. I would think most of peeps who have played Oblivion get what those things refer to.
