These are not advanced hiking tips, this is a packlist (sorry Chris). For one thing, 'advanced' hikers don't need to be told that a shirt keeps your upper body warm.

What would have been more interesting i.m.o. is which trade-offs you make in choosing your gear for a particular type of trip (Do you want your hard shell to come with a thermal layer or do you have a separate garment?) and which items you keep on-hand as opposed to the deeper and harder to reach places in your outfit.

this was a decent video, but the author should have went into more detail and explained WHY it is important to carry certain items.

I assume that this video was leaning more toward a short day-hike and not a week long excursion into the mountains.

Some other essential gear that wasn't mentioned in the video:

 shelter such as a tent or bivvy ground cloth/ sleeping bag knife, hatchet, multi-tool Rope cooking supplies personal hygiene items Fire starters small cooking stove whistle

This 'informative' video was shear garbage and utterly useless for the first timer. Materials for clothes are of the utmost importance, especially for us weight concious folk. Water-PROOF outer shells are a must. A lightweight woolen inner layer is a must, the list goes on. There are just too many omissions and half-truths in this 'expert advise'. This guy is going to get someone killed. Remember that cotton kills. He didn't say why he used synthetics, wool is best but there are plenty of blends/synthetics now that are just as good. Bring a backup to your lighter, even if it's another lighter. Some water purification tabs would be a good addition..

I am sorry but Canada is not thinking of banning "Rambo" style knives- there are some jurisdictions that are thinking of trying it but in Canada a knife is a tool and there are no carry restrictions as long as it is not a prohibited item such as a Balisong/butterfly knife, switchblade/auto or a knuckle knife.

By the way where is his cutlery- if not a specific knife each hiker should have a multi-tool or swiss army style tool and some form of fire starter.

I have lived in areas where they have so called gun control what happens is the criminals have guns everywhere they go and law abiding folks have none. I don't live where they don't allow me to be armed b/c just the fact that I can protect myself keeps the criminals guessing. You have to be alert and keep a good head that alone will prevent most attacks. I apologise for point 5, I shouldn't have added an insult. I vehemently oppose the death penalty exept for leaders of state that engage in warfare for cynical reasons, but being able to vehemently oppose whilst remaining civil is a virtue that I let slip. People are always going to take drugs and many will succumb. Wise policy should be based on minimising the harm drugs do to individuals and society as hole. The 'war on drugs' is as misconceived and dangerous as the 'war on terror'.
