As a man, how do you make sure that you don't injure the crotch area (jewels) when you put the hip power move and the bar is right at the crotch level? For myself, I've noticed that I hesitate and deliver a very weak hip thrust because I fear slamming the crotch. Any advice? Should I thrust the hip when the bar is still at the height of the thigh and below the crotch? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.
Well checkout where the bar is when your standing and it's at a dead hang. For me, the bar sits high on the thigh, below my crotch area. Doubt your going to hit yourself haha.
@nico3641 You should wear some compression underwear to keep your "stuff" close to your body and you have to just get your technique solid. Good technique will mean you really have no chance of smashing your stuff, although if you hip thrust too hard and too hight up on your thighs you could possible hit the bar with your junk.
question: so when you reintroduced the hips at the end of the video, do you still need to pull up on the bar (as if doing a heavily loaded "scarecrow") or does the explosive hip movement take away the need to fully recruit the scarecrow?
I ask because the scarecrow looks similar to an upright row movement, which I try to avoid like the plague.
just learnt I have osteoathritis on my knee, obviously I shudnt be doing anything to higher impact, do u think I should sack these as I was gona incorporate them into my workout,or maybe if I just kept my feet on the floor when I did em?
i personally feel that most people's weak spot on the clean is the actually lift, rather than the racking portion. As such i like to drill people using weight heavy enough that forces them to 1. engage their core, and 2. move quickly and drop their hips under the bar.
What a sexist. He improvises male characteristics in all workouts. He's a bad, terrible excuse of a human being. Working out applies to both sexes, not just one you society fail.
Bad tutorial. Too much emphasis on arm movement. Its a jump not a pull so why are you teaching it like the arms do any work in the explosive part. Crap trainer.
@bangbongbong This was obviously a skill work day where they drilled some of the small points of the clean. Good trainers won't just let you do full movements all the time. You have to break down mechanics and address certain areas that people tend to slop on. Since you're such a expert, why don't you post a video and show us all how to drill Olympic lifts?

Hey, Ive never lifted before and I cant afford a trainer...Im starting a program monday from a book i bought (Mens Health Power Training). Any advice would be appreciated.
@neemguy81 Don't push yourself too hard at first. Listen to your body and give it a few days to tell you how it feels after the first workouts. Look over the various videos here on proper form. Look into some other books at the library. Get some feedback from others who seem to have good form at the gym. Diet and rest are equally important. Don't skimp on them. That's all I've got.
If you perform a clean and jerk. You can not let the grip go around the bar. Also power cleaning a barbell. I would think that letting the grip go to allow it rack on the shoulders. Does not make sense. In weight lifting they do not let the grip go like that. I think that in the video its taught wrong. With out the hook grip with a lot of weight it can be unstable
Not letting the grip go will not let the barbell rest on your shoulders. If you don't let the grip go, the weight will end up resting on your wrists and you could injure yourself that way
@wootage92 You should be able to keep a full grip of the bar in the rack position, if not then your wrist flexibility isn't good enough! If you are preparing to jerk the bar, you dont want just your finger tips touching the bar....
Interesting way of breaking it down - I typically see it presented with the power shrug first from the hang, then the high pull added and so on... You make a great case for teaching it the other way around - it really seems to make sense that way. I'll give that a try next time. Great vid, thanks for posting!

@wtbh2666 The reverse curl being demonstrated in this video is not a small point of the clean.

@wootage92 just need to increase tricep flexibility, when adding the jerk to the clean its better if u can get jerk with full grip
JRubin86 9 months ago
@wootage92 nah someone has enough flexibility on the wrists to avoid that
mrquadzillah 2 months ago
@wootage92 no you won't. The bar should be firmly in the hand at the catch position.
