Disarming veterans is more than 'the nose of the camel' entering the tent.
Vets have first-hand knowledge of military tactics and strategy, and are experts in weapons use.
Vets also know the truth behind US military intervention overseas, and are more likely to be involved in resistance against encroachment of their liberty (since they may be angry about 'fighting for democracy' only to find that we violated the rights of the people we invaded).

I think disarming vets is a bullseye shot.
