i thought dogs that did that were abused too until i adopted a dog that did that when i came home. never laid a finger on my dog and she smiles when i first walk in through the door.
Heya Bud, was wondering what breed your dog is? we have what is apparently a staffy x coolie with the same distinctive facial markings as yours. It would be interesting to know! thanks mate
My dog smiles too! She's so polite too, but we got her from a breeder when she was a few days old so we never trained her to do it! She must just be really happy and imitated our facial expressions.
Soooooooo cuuuute! My doggie smiles like this too, but I got her when she was 2 years old and she was already the politest, best-trained dog anyone could possibly ask for, so I don't even know if someone taught her to smile or if she's just always done it... and I have no way of contacting her previous humans to find out. :(
My dog also wags his tail from wherever he may be lying down and waits for you to come to him to pet him. He´s an old dog and getting up is not as easy as it used to be.
I do not believe what people are saying about Kingston cowering!
He must have Shiba Inu in him. Am I right? The "Smile" is a classic trait of the Shiba! They hold their ears back, squint their eyes, wag their tails, and "smile" with their mouths. It does NOT mean that they are being fearful/submissive/or cowering!
I have a Shiba mix and he does this whenever I come home from school. He runs over to me and "smiles". He is not cowardly, and he thinks he runs the house. I have NEVER hurt him.
People always have to jump in and tell someone what their dog is doing.... Believe it or not Devinpenhall knows more about his dog than any of the random people on you tube. Yes some dogs will cower in the corner and act submissive... But that doesn't mean every dog in the corner wagging their tail is fearing for their life... My dog would do this on occasion to solicit belly rubs :P People need to calm down and stop jumping to conclusions.
omg i love ur doggy my CAT is so boring he doesn't care all he cares about is food cause when he is hungry he tells us by............................................
biting my moms ELBOW yes her ELBOW LOL ur soo lucky :P
@MrsCrazyette Really?? My cat always fallows me around the house and stays with me when I'm working or watching tv, etc. When it's very early in the morning, he comes to sleep right next to me (this is a really nice way to wake up and start the day ^^) and everytime I come home, I'm not sure if he actually greets me like a dog, but he comes at the door and asks me to hold him (he gets up on his feet and try to reach my arms, so I guess he aks me to hold him). He's so loving and lovable ^^

That dog is cowering , its very fucking obvious and the way u seem to be talking or even reach to pet the dog , i gurantte you treat that dog like shit
It's a submissive posture, but clearly not cowering. He is not threatened, just showing that he is not challenging his higher-ranking owner. His squinting eyes/soft gaze towards his owner, lack of serious tension in his face, & gentle wagging tail do not indicate anxiety or fear, but appeasement if anything. My adopted dog has fear aggression issues and when she is scared she'll roll over, her entire body tense, licks lips repeatedly, looks away, face tense, tail flicks. Completely different.
Just so you all know I have never laid a hand on my dog. He lives the perfect life. He was properly kennel trained and is probably the most well adjusted dog ive ever seen.
That's not how a dog cowers. Some dogs get hip problems as they get older, and it's easier to just lie down instead of getting up and hopping around for their owners. Our dog is only nine and he has trouble standing up.
It's not factual information. I love how people call ANIMAL ABUSE whenever they can. It's starting to piss me off.

It does or has been in the passed. It could have been so bad in the past that this expression is habitual. When someone comes home he acts that way. A lot of times with abused dogs; the frustrated(&ignorant) owners beat it because it urinated, defecated or destroyed something. All because they were to cheap or stupid to kennel him.
Or the owner is bi-polar. The dog doesn't now what to think. lol
My dog smiles like that too. When she gets REALLY happy she looks kinda scary. She also gets up and finds whatever she can to pick up then wags her tail so hard it could probably break your legs. BUT IT IS AWESOME!
What kind of dog?
