@niko60219 Yep. I didn't make any new one's this year because I'm broke from moving to the haunt. But I did build a new fence. I'll have those pics up this week.
@audradbee It's done the same way the Disney does it in their Pirates of the Caribbean ride. It's a mix of red and yellow lights shinning on a 1 mill think painter's tarp that a fan is blowing around. Disney uses a silver silk like cloth which is fairly expensive. The painter's tarp works just as good and it's cheap.
wow really nice setup, its almost time to get started on new things for this year! anyway, i really liked the burning garage, is there a tutorial or something that i could look at ?
I'm in the stages of getting ready to paint my tombstones. Right now I have about 13 pink insulation tombstones sitting in front of me. Are you sure the black latex paint is the right color to pull of that nice dark grey look you did on yours? I bought a can of black and a can of primer and I'm afraid to use it, just cause I'm hoping the black will kind of soak into the insulation, kinda drying out to a grey color instead of black. You're sure it's black you used?
@twindrivein Test it on one to see how you like it. When I do my fake wooden ones, I always put black on first, then dry brush the other colors.. If you are wanting a lighter grey almost white marble look, you could use a primer grey first then dry brush your whites. The point is, your darker colors should go on first so they can get into the ridges and lettering. It never hurts to take a piece of scrap and try your paint scheme on it first.
@twindrivein Ok, but did you use a roller to put the paint on or did you use a brush? I've primed one, just to test it. I used a brush putting it on, but the paint kinda fills the lettering holes. Isn't that a bad thing? If I did primer on first and then dry brush white for the marble look, they won't look anything like the ones you did in your video. Yours are like a dark grey color. And lastly, did you fill in the lettering with black marker or a darker grey? Could people read your stones?
@SIMPLEPLANROCKS22 I think it's a remix of Disney's Grim Grinning Ghosts. But, I'm not sure. I don't have my "yard haunt" cds anymore. They were lost in the move.
Wow.... Out of this world. Love the tombstones great job! Looks like alot of work? Really good work. The staging, techniques so professional, awesome job! Everything Halloween!
@bond2e2 I have had a lot of fog machines in the past and have never had much luck with any of them. But that year I was using the Chauvet F-1050 Hurricane 1050 Fog Machine. It put out so much fog that we had to turn it way down. My neighbor down the street said that at full power my house looked like a destroyer laying a smoke screen. I hope to use it again this year.
I love the eerie realistic approach you took!! It's a lot better than tons of manufactured statues and horror movie characters. It lets your imagination run wild!
@Trueghostgirl Thanks. we try to keep down to "Disney scary" so we don't terrify the little ones. One year I played the Headless Horseman, with a real horse and flaming pumpkin. I couldn't see anything in the get up. But I did hear one kid say,"Oh hell no" before he took off running.
any chance you would like to reveal your garage fire secrets? I compete in a small town against my EX for 1st place each halloween, this would put me over the top for sure!
@susan21869 Clear plastic painter's tarp from Home Depot hung loosely from ceiling. There's a fan underneath blowing up. For the color, I added red and yellow flood lights at the bottom (aimed up). The colored lights will reflect in the clear plastic as the fan blows waves up the plastic. It's basically hot the fire in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride is done, only they us light weight silk instead of clear plastic.
@rustyspurproductions Oh yeah, you need to put a little weight on the bottom of the plastic or it will fly all over the place. You have to play with it some to get the fan in the right spot too. You can hide the fan and lights by sticking empty gas cans or fake boxes of TNT in front.
CAUTION: A smoke machine will add even more realism unfortunately it's enough realism to get a visit from the fire department.
In Texas, it's hard to find 2" thick foam. So I was using 1" held together with liquid nails to get the thickness. If you are wanting 2'X3' stones you should be able to get 2 and a half of those from one sheet of 4'X8'X1". In other words, 5 pieces cut, that would make 2 and a half stones. It might be better to start with small stones. A mistake would ruin less material than on a big one. I like the pink or blue. They sand better. The white tends to flake or break into chunks when sanding.
That's a good idea, I'll do that exactly when I start practicing making them. Where did you get the measurements for your tombstones, they look just like real sized ones?
Is there some how I can get your template dimensions that you used for them from you?
@IpodAppsUniverse The dimensions vary depending on the size & thickness you want. I have some as tall as 3', as short as 1'. But the average height is 2' tall. The reason is that one sheet of foam could yield 16 2'X1'X1" stones OR 8 2'X1'X2" stones (one you have glue two together to get the thickness). Also, I use a piece of steel rebar to stake each one in the ground. To keep the rebar from tearing through foam in high wind, I place a piece of PVC inside. I'll try to find pics of that for you.
@rustyspurproductions Great, I needed to hear that. I went to Home Depot to price out some Insulation boards and most of the really long and wide ones cost about $20 each. You said to get pink insulation board, I saw some white ones as well. Are the pink ones better to use then the white do you think? I'm just wondering if the white boards break apart a lot easier along the edges compared to the pink. Also... in your experience, is gluing 2 boards and making them 2" thick more realistic or no?
@rustyspurproductions I made a visit to Home Depot to check out their insulation boards. Are the longest and widest ones the best to buy for this project? What's your opinion cost wise for these boards? What's the best way to go if I want to make as many tombstones as possible on my first board, but while still having a bunch of different sized ones on there. I prefer the 2' and 3' tall ones compared to the really short ones. Thank you!
Perfect, thank you. I'll try looking around for places around town that sell them, I still have a lot of time until next Halloween to find one. How long did it take you to make everything in your Halloween yard?
Also, how did you build your black fence in the video? Looks amazing, suits the tombstones perfectly
@IpodAppsUniverse It took me a couple of years because I would only make 10 or so every year. But now, I could make that many in just a few weekends. The key is to make an assembly line of it. Today I would cut out as many as I could and glue them together at one time. That way I would have several of them dried and ready for sanding the next day. It's the same with painting.
It's easier to do that than to create one at a time.
What type of store is Michael's MJ designs? I'm located in Canada, I don't think we have that store here. I'll try and find a similar type of store here as soon as I get a good description of where to go. Thank you
@IpodAppsUniverse It's an arts and craft store. If you search on google, I found several places in Canada that sell them online. I'm not sure what they would cost in Canada but If memory serves I paid around $12 for mine.
I tried to copy and paste the web address here but Youtube isn't letting me do that for some reason.
@IpodAppsUniverseUnfortunately, my wood burner fell apart this year after years of abuse. But, I believe I got it at Michael's MJ designs. It looks like a writing pen with a small shield to protect the fingers from the heat.
You did a really great job on your yard this year, I love what you did. What kind of wood burner did you use for the epitaphs, can you give me an example photo so I know what to look for in stores? Thank you so much
Great job on the props and video too! My favorites: Fire in the garage and cross tombstones with moss on them. Happy Halloween, keep up the good work, looks great!
@IpodAppsUniverse I use the thickest pink foam insulation from Home Depot, cut out the patterns, and liquid nails 2 pieces together (for added thickness). Then I sand the edges smooth. For the epitaphs, I use a wood burner. It's not as pretty as a router but a lot quicker then paint.
for the fake wooden ones, it's the same process except use the wood burner and sand paper to make the wood grain, paint the whole stone with black latex paint, then dry brush 2 or 3 shades of brown.
@rustyspurproductions I just bought some insulation board, cut them to size, and now I'm in the sanding process. How rough is the sanding supposed to be on the edges? Should I go out and buy a light sand paper or rough? What did you do?
@twindrivein It depends on the effect I want as to which sand paper I use. If I'm making a fake marble, I use fine sandpaper. If I'm making the fake wood look, I use a rougher paper and actually try to create a wood grain with it. It just takes some experimenting. If you have a piece of scrap, practice on that. You'll find that foam is easier to sand than wood. That makes it easier to make mistakes.
