  • This is very good performance no doubt but Osaka sensei's kata is more mature and technically more complete due to greater experience.

  • as always; the battle between traditional and sport-karatekas. Please, shut up about demanding to see videos of each other's katas! no matter from what school someone comes from, traditional or sports, he/she still have the right to speak. Funakoshi talked about good spirit, show some, please.

that said, i'm from the traditional school and have to say that this kata is much better than both Valdesi's and Milon's versions.

  • Why? Sport-katas (Valdesi & Milon) are less organic and fluid; it's more of a perfected show than a kata with spirit. Let me explain: the kata itself is its own basic level of bunkai and therefore relies more on spirit, kime and fluid movements. what sport-kata does is removing the bunkai (and so the spirit of fighting) from the katas and turning it into a polished scenography where it's all about contrast of movement.

  • but that doesn't mean that Tsuchiya's heels should lift during punches, as 'MMilon' pointed out. going into the other things that 'MMilon' pointed out.

    1. legs like spaghetti is harsh, there's tons of kime. but i agree that they' aren't as rooted as they could due to the heels.

    2. this is purely a sport-vs-tradition difference: if you look at the traditional use of fudo-dachi, his stance is perfect.

    3. once again, sport-vs-traditional difference.

  • 4. utilizing the hip is key in every movement in karate. to execute a empi in fudo-dachi and fully using the hip is extremely hard due to the hips being partly fixated. so you have to choose to either push more kime into the technique OR to concentrate on a totally fixed dachi ....

  • ... he simply chose to focus on the empi and if you freeze the frame just before the empi lands you'll see that he's using zenkutso-dachi to push the hips and then lands nicely back in fudo-dachi, thus dragging the back foot a bit. both dynamic and fluid.

  • 5. arguably - yes.

    6. sochin isn't fast or 'snappy' like empi/enpi or kanku sho. it's a heavy kata (even more so than hangetsu in some ways) utilizing more weight and kime than speed. And other than the double-tsukis it's sort of a medium paced kata. very heavy and rooted, especially the last part of it.

  • now, i'm not implying that he's doing a perfect and flawless sochin. firstly: i'm just trying to say that you're rating it the same way you would do with a Valdesi or a Milon even though it's two different ideas behind them - traditional and sports. And for example, the “lack of hikite” is ridiculous cus I’m pretty sure both Valdesi and Milon have done so too in katas they’ve preformed, you know, like every ones else.

  • secondly: it all comes down to what you want to obtain from training a kata; scenographic perfection or spirit.

All that said – I think this is a monster sochin. One of the better once I’ve seen.

  • Wow. Having read all the criticisms to Tsuchiya's Sochin, I can only think that there are a huge number of finely tuned karateka surfing YouTube looking to correct some crappy efforts like the one shown here. Great job people!

  • He is the voice.. behind "FUS RO DAH" !!

  • Amazing performance!

  • correction to the last comment: " but his performance is still cleaner and more dynamic than Tsuchiya's."

  • I know traditionalists like this way of performing a kata, but just look at how many mistakes he makes. How can a kata with so many mistakes be considered a good kata? Yes, Valdesi cheats a lot, but he's performance is still cleaner and more dynamic than Tsuchiya's.

If you want a role model for your katas, Milon is the man. Light years ahead of Tsuchiya in every aspect!

Try to keep a clear mind and don't idolize someone just because he's Japanese. The Japanese are no longer No.1 in karate.

  • Also, check his other katas (particularily Unsu) and notice they're not nearly as sharp as his Sochin. That means there are some techniques in Sochin that just suit him and he's able to execute them explosively, but he's not able to execute every technique like that.

In conclusion, this is far from being an excellent performance. With this Sochin, he lost to Valdesi's Gojushiho Sho (Gojushiho-Sho being Valdesi's quater final kata, so not even his best kata).

  • 3. His kokutsu-dachi is incorrect: too high, incorrect weight distribution.

    4. When he does the youko geri' - empi uchi, his back foot is sliding towards the direction of the movement. Also when he does the left yoko geri, he looses the hikite.

    5. His mikazuki geri is rather slow.

    6. The last part of the kata almost completely lacks kime and speed. Also, the movements (the transition between stances) are very slow.

  • Kata doesn't just mean an imaginary fight. A simulated fight with boxing techniques is not a kata. "Living" the kata is not the only thing. A kata means technique, power, speed and kime. Let's analyse this kata and see how many flaws he has:

    1. For all the double gyaku-zuki's, his legs are like spagetti and he lifts his heels.

    2. His fudo dachi is incorrect: his front leg is leaning towards inside and it's also not aggressive enough (it should be more bended). His back foot is also too open.

  • Just amazing!!!

  • I never heared about Tsuchiya nor Valdesi before, just checked their katas, and I have to say Tsuchiya far more better than the other guy...in this kata has power, focus, tradition. Fact! Noone can perform a traditional shotokan kata better than a japanese does. We (none japanese) just watching agape in the shadow of Japan.

  • Excellent performance! One of the best Sochin's ive seen! :D

  • Very good. But Sochin is in Fudo Dachi, not Zenkutsu.

    Oss!

  • @FeddePerez

    He is doing fudo dachi.

  • @juliem59 ok, but it's like a zenkutsu. Thats what i can see

    (sorry for my english.)

  • I just started back training after 14 years absence, and re-learnt Sochin the other night. I thought I would use youtube to find a video to help me with certain parts of the kata where I needed extra work and WOW what a video to stumble across ... this is by far the best Sochin i have ever seen anywhere live or video, my hat off to you Tsuchiya. Much respect and appreciation for your karate.

  • Kagawa's influence is clear here, and to good effect.

  • Brilliant.

  • I can't believe what I just saw. This is the best Sochin i've ever seen

  • 神だけど、要所要所で栗原先生のほうがうまいところもある

  • Excelente, nota 10...... alain guimarães, Catanduva , SP/BR

  • i like his "NI TSUKI"...

  • He is so god damn amazing!!!

  • Awesome!!!

  • amazing performance fast strong good stance & kime congratulation

  • Comment removed

  • Shotojojo: We are comparing competitors from different arenas. I'm from a traditional background where kime stems from the hara (center), not just from the extremities. The WKF has different criteria from traditional Shotokan karate. To each his own.

  • awesome !!!

  • kime in shuto is embarassing!!!!

  • Ecsellent.Oss.

  • OH MY GOD !! EARTHQUAKE IN EVERY STOMP??

  • ossu ^:)^

  • wow. the best version i have ever seen of this kata. been around along time aswell.

  • IMPRESIVE!

  • great! you are awesome!

  • This is totally awesome!!! It's very amazing. I hope I can do this kata just like him.

  • he's not chambering does side kicks which means there going to be weak

  • @badkidd77 : maybe you can do it better? please post a video of what you mean.

  • @badkidd77 wrote: "he's not chambering does side kicks which means there going to be weak "

you speak as if you can do it better, please post your video.

  • @aquariaman3 Its ridiculous to dismiss constructive criticism just because someone can't do better themselves, or because they don't have their own video, The comments might very well be legitimate, why are YOU so threatened by them? That said, I think this guy's kata is magnificent, personally.

  • @Taggard123 what is more ridiculous is people who sit on their couches nitpicking what is a masterful performance. of course no one's kata is perfect, that is the paradox of doing it, seeking what is unattainable. but if you open your mouth and criticize someone's performance, you must back it up with a better performance to show us what you mean. otherwise your criticism has no merit. you must see the kata for what it is, not what it is not.

  • @aquariaman3 I'm not going to say what I think about your IQ, I'm just asking you this: if your favourite football team has a bad match, aren't you allowed to criticize the players just because you can't play better? Or if you hear someone sing badly, aren't you allowed to express your opinion just because you can't sing better? If a computer software is poor, aren't you allowed to say it just because you can't write a better one yourself? The examples can continue, I hope you got the point.

  • @aquariaman3 I say amen to that....

  • Esto es SHOTOKAN!!! El hecho de que el karate-do sea un deporte hoy en dia no significa que pierda su esencia original. Para mi es la mejor Sochin que he visto!!! This is real SHOTOKAN!!! By the way that karate-do is a current sport isn't means that loose it's original essence. To me, it's the best Sochin ever!!!!

  • Simply put: this performance of Sochin is amazing!

Would the ten fags who disliked this video please post vids of themselves doing this kata better!

  • awesome strikes! you gotta love the sound it makes

  • Love the first punches! What power!

  • @itotsu1

Bob up and down? I presume your training has been limited.. If your technique is good enough you shouldn't be bobbing regardless of any stance. Pay attention to the Sochin Dachi's in this kata, the stances are very deep and rooted which contradicts what you're saying. The Kokutsu dachi's vary slightly on the Shuto uki's and Manji uki's being a little higher. Have a little respect for another KarateKa's opinion. Maybe look at your own before your wonder why you have to attack others'

  • @euterpe101 make ur on kata video..

  • Solid! Excellent timing.

But being a perfectionist idiot that i am.. i'd like to see those Kokutsu dachi's just a tiny bit deeper ;)

  • Brilliant Kata only thing the feet should connect with the floor and they lift on the punches.

  • Sochin is my favorite kata. I will call it "the best kata ever made" because it is a really strong kata.

The performance of this Japanese guy is really awesome with great speed and kime! Best Sochin i have ever seen!!

    Osu!!

  • @chillcrewgodfather I call it the best kata ever made ;)

  • @my2opinion Wie meint ger?

  • @chillcrewgodfather dat litste

  • @chillcrewgodfather You would probably like Osaka Sensei's Sochin, too, and Kankudai, both of which are on youtube, I believe

  • @mallardgreen Osu!!! I watch Sochin and Kanku dai by Osaka. Very Nice!!!

  • Such a God-like execution of Sochin we must all bow for Tsuchiya will redeem us all LOL

  • I would like to know who's good enough to "dislike" that !

  • @Larloch80 :) yes this kata is pure

  • Strong Sochin...

  • wumbwumb...wumb....bom...bom...AUUUUUUU!

  • This is quite possibly the best Kata I've ever seen in my life!

  • Would a 1959 version "Old Sochin" JKA Shotokan Karate Kata be considered "real Shotokan"?

  • Este es el mejor sochin que hay en internet, espiritu, ritmo, tecnica pura , kime y una ejecucion de exhibicion sin el estres de la competencia, ARTE PURO!

  • THAT (!!!) has got to be the BEST EXAMPLE OF SOCHIN , I have EVER seen!!! Amazing control & hip snap !!

  • My favorit Kata

  • Brilliantly done

  • awsome kata

  • He's like a machine! Very precise, and you can feel the power behind every one of his movements.

  • arhh amazing

hear that snap of the suit on each technique ahhh such a gud kata amazing :)

  • I agree ... very nice performance

  • This is exactly my idea of Shotokan. It is fast, clean, crisp, and razor sharp.

    Very well done.

  • Absolutely flawless kata. An inspiration.

  • This is how everybody should preform the original Sochin kata...JKA style! Great!

  • Yep, except this is JKS, not JKA :o)

  • This is karate. Lots of power. Awesome.

  • karateka no kamisama!

  • What awesome shutos!

  • This is the real Shotokan. Valdesi is sportified Shotokan, with no internal kime.

  • @zoom421

I can see the kime... by the snapping sound of the gi~! Some just try to make it loud with loud breathing.... :(

  • @zoom421 Pure Shotokan practitioner will show his/her pure shotokan skills. And you're darn right, he's purely shotokan with no b.s. Oss!

  • @zoom421 You do realize he lost against Valdesi. Hes very good, dont get me wrong. But just because the guy is Japanese shouldn't make him world champion. Valdesi Kata is cleaner, and more athletic. Say what you want, but he is still a x3 time World champion. And whats your tittles?

  • uuuf mucho mejor q cunado competia en la wkf

  • perfecta ejecucion

  • Valdesi is only sportsman...This is much better!!!!!

  • This guy has better basics and power than Valdesi...try to pay close attention to Valdesi's pulling hand for example...

  • He is very, very good. Top shelf.

  • its like gun fire with his steps and punches he must be Thor

  • Very good, very powerful as it should be

  • Muy bueno me gustó, excelente kata, habría sido perfecto si mirára antes del ataque. Al no hacerlo queda la sensación de artificial. Saludos de Chile.

  • That was excellent. I like watching Sensei Valdesi's performances too. Though I think he slaps his gi way too much to get that special 'noise' we all aim for. He's good enough to let his technique do that job itself without adding a slap to his gi to emphasise it.

  • Without a doubt, Tsuchiya is way much better than Valdesi!

  • Yeah he's HIGHLY over rated.

  • Unbelievable

  • Too many pontificating on his minor mistakes here, with all due respect to self proclaimed judges, this is by far the most powerful, swift and stable Sochin ever demostated on youtube. It is exemplary with a beautiful tempo. Valdesi is very good but robotic compared to Tsuchiya.

  • I strongly agree. The beauty of nature is within its imperfection. All the minor flaws from human performance balances one's extreme ideal of seeking perfection; robots, can be relatively flawless, but also lifeless. This is a beautiful Kata performance.

  • You may want to watch Osaka Sensei performing Sochin.

  • It is funny to see your amateurs comments about a kata that was so perfectly and amazingly performed. This karateca is so great that I he does not have to worry about winning or losing championships. Karate is already inside him.

  • Amazing. Any system of Martial Art can see the focus and beauty here.

  • bel kata...perde varie volte il tallone del piede posteriore..sono d'accordo sulla potenza dei pugni ma credo che l'effetto "snap" aumenti di molto l'impressione della potenza

  • I must say- Very strong but from a Judge's point of view i saw a few flaws

Heel's rising- inconsistent height stance- and for the side kicks his base foot slides for the elbow strike- Very strong- But at this level we have nothing else to do but Knit Pick- Oss

  • Comment removed

  • his punches are absolutely incredible!!!

  • nice kata

  • i would not like to think i had to follow that... brilliant..

  • este es el mejor sochin que he visto en internet/ this is the best sochin i have seen in internet

  • This is a very good sochin....I am yet to see anyone do the same.

    Oss!!!

  • one flaw- he dropped his hands when doing the first kick. Other than that, very impressive!

  • Incredible power!

  • Absolutely magnificent !!!

  • Osu!

  • I'm very impressed with his performance. Very powerful, crisp and exposive punches..Osss...

  • It's awesome, no doubt about it. My only little detail is that he lets his right arm fall away from his body during the first side kick. Still, I could not dream of doing it better!

  • I saw that too, but before I read your post, and thought "when your kata is so perfect a slight 'detail' stands out more." My mistakes are like trying to find hay in a haystack. You might see one or two, but trust me there are several hundred more

  • PERFECT..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Best Sochin...especially the double punch part...the speed & power are so perfect....

  • Solid!

  • is it regular in Shotokan to pronounce the kata after yohi?

  • thats how i do it at my dojo, it varies i believe

  • apart from pronouncing being something born from the competitions (I guess) pronouncing in yohi is quite strange actually since entering into yohi means you have started. It would make sense to pronounce before starting. right?

  • Often we pronounce after Rei, then Yoi, but everyone's different so... :)

  • Great kata. Oss!

  • Very nicely done, good strong moves, solid stances. We all should aspire to do our kata this way...

  • wow, so fast..usually guys that fast have weak looking kata, but he kept it very traditional..amazing

  • Yes, similar to M° Marchini.

  • Solid, stong performance with great kime and stances. One to aim for!

  • This is a solid performance.

  • alto sochin uno de los mas potentes que vi,realmente inspirador, ooss

  • I disagree, I personally think his overall technique is more solid, Sensei Brenon's stances are very large and which I think makes his Kata's weaker.

  • One thing Sensei Brennan's katas are not, and that's weak! His katas are fantastic

  • This is the best sochin I have seen.

  • when he did the first kick his right hand moved too much

  • thats true...but nobody is perfect and has to aim for perfection and won't achieve it.

Great kata, best sochin ive ever seen.

And by the way you cannot compare this kata with brennan's coz he is from another time. Kata changes.

  • kicks are fine. much better performance than that of valdesi's. n.b. - for someone who calls themselves foul, stupid and such, heck, their comments cannot be anything but a waste of space.

  • Perfect!

  • THIS IS A SECOND SOCHIN AFTER KAWAWADA SOCHIN.AND THERE's no any other in here. Two absolut correct Sochin.

  • You forgot Hirokazu Kanazawa's version

  • This impresses me. First time I've seen a shotokan kata performed; I don't compete high-level therefore haven't had the oppertunity to see it done personally. But even so, this was damn good. I want to see this man perform in person now... :P

  • Outstanding.

  • I could watch this over and over, very nice performance. Only part that is really lacking are the kicks. His side snaps are quite poor compared to the rest of the performance.

  • Brilliant perormance

  • i could not agree more homusubio, good to see ther are still real karateka in italy. this sochin is top draw.

  • excelente katá, muito bom dos 26 shotokan, SOCHIN é meu katá predileto

  • I'm an italian. We have the best karateka in the world (WKF). Is that realy so? I think that a sochin like this is 1.000.000 time better than any kata performed by any Valdesi. Only the japanese keep following the Budo and here you can see it

  • The WKF is sport.Only sport. With great sportmen.

  • this isnt WKF, Tsyuchiya sensei is JKA, and he performs in the JKS tournaments.. i have the 2002 All Japan Karate Championships on VHS and he won the men's kata competition!

  • yes but Tsyuchiya competed in the 2004 WKF World Championships and was eliminated by Valdesi.

  • I don't doubt that he lost to valdesi.. but if you compare to the fluidity, focus, and the technique of their katas Tsyuchiya is better because he looks like he is actually fighting someone.. Valdesi is good do not get me wrong.. he is damn good, but his kata look like he is just doing the motions... he doesn't look like he is fighting... Tsyuchiya here has it all, and most importantly he looks like hes fighting someone

  • And his suit makes noises...

I wish my suit did that :-(

  • And I have the tape of when he won the JKF kata championship in 2004, and his knuckles were bruised from punching makiwara boards. So he knows how it feels to actually hit something. And if you compare these two you have to look at who looks like their actually fighting someone versus them just doing the movements.. In my opinion Tsyuchiya is the better karate ka..

    Osu

  • Yes i do agree, I actually prefer the more traditional look in katas as you can see each technique has meaning and has application. Looking at the more sport oriented katas in the WKF, they look flashier because the focus is on performance, so yes valdesi or antonio diaz would beat someone like him easily, but you don't see each technique having meaning like you would in a kata like this.

  • Exactly their katas are based on performance like you said. As to where Tsyuchiyas sochin here is focused on technique as well as feeling. Unlike the WKF where kata is based on how well you can do the technique. I just feel like WKF kata= technique only, as to where Traditional kata= technique and feeling. I feel that because of the way the WKF does kata the WKF kumite is sloppy because they just throw technique after technique, without focusing and timing it correctly

  • This is probably the best Sochin Kata performance I have seen so far. Solid Fudo Dachi and swift Kizami tsuki and Giaku tsuki. Possibly the only weekness is in the Geri and Migeri kicks which need to be as sharp as the punches. None the less the performance is convincing with its consistent level of energy and expressed power..... Exemplary JKA performance !!

  • Exceptional. The karate here is very crisp, very fast, with very full techniques. This is my idea of Shotokan.

  • I dont think its intentional... if it was intentional he would of also lifted his right heel up on the second kiai

  • a breathtaking performance. Question...when the karateka lands his double punches, his rear heel rises from the ground at the moment of the first punch's impact. Is this intentional?
