Maya is used more in the film industry(animated and live action(vfx)) while 3DSMax is used in the gaming industry, C4D for motion graphics; Houdini is starting to be used more and more for film.

But honestly, people use whatever they know, for whatever the need to do.

Maya, 3DSMax, Houdini, XSI and the others are all great tools, you can use anything. What others use doesn't really matter.
