I think you're right about reduced tillage working for some. But for others, spading is a great way to prepare the seedbed for fine seeded crops. There are some studies showing that organic matter levels can still be increase using this type of tillage, which is less intense than the rotovator type.
i'd be interested to see if, in the long term, this machine can actually improve soil health. my concern is that it is still over-oxygenating the soil and burning up not only much biomass, but the microbes as well that will need to be put in balance after the tilling. i believe there are northeast farmers that do practice no-till, or a very reduced till. if they're doing it, then it can be done.
I just realized this farm is literally 5 minutes from my house. Going to try and become an apprentice there.
