  • unfortunately, dickey betts is a huge crackhead and it shows in his stage presence. his son, who is very talented and could also be great, is even worse off than daddy and is usually in the middle of a 3 day bender... not sure how he even makes it to his shows.

  • DONT DRINK AND DRIVE

  • GOD BLESS THE U.S.A.

  • STARSNBARS

  • dickey is the best

  • Yes,, Bett's was more than half of what made the Allman brothers famous! Without him, Ramblin man, which was a number one hit for many many weeks, and made the Allman brothers a national success! Yes,, Betts should not have been treated the way he was by the band, regardless of his personal flaws! Gregg had his,, and they of course didn't or couldn't throw him out, I hope one day soon, they can make peace and have a reunion! That would be a sell-out concert tour, for certain!

  • why aren't these old time codgers permanently r-e-t-i-r-e-d.......fishing, relaxing, sipping whiskey at home where they belong ? Who are the audience members that keep yelling "whoooo",,,are they codgers too ?

  • duane got killed as the greatest slide guitatariat ever BUT straight guitar playing dickey was better

  • Lots of comments here say that this is out of tune but, I tend to think this is more like Buddy Guy. Microtonal bends. Plus, I dig the crap out of his go for it attitude on this. This isn't "safe" blues

  • one of the best guitar vids ever!!!

  • I love this. Dickey don' give a shit.

  • he is messing up this song terribly!

  • a band with such experience can't break with hig gtr player. I think Duane should'nt be proud of that. ABB or nothing. Breakin' up all toghether would have been more sense

  • no one wants to point out how brutally he assassinated this clip?

  • The message here kids is dont do drugs!!!! This guy was one of the best. Now he cant play for shit. Smoked too many of his brain cells in the 70s and 80s.

  • dickey betts is great. another legend that doesn't get his due is steve morse. those 2 southern guitar greats should do an album together.

  • FUNNY STORY.. WE WERE AT "GATHERING OF THE VIBES""07"...AND THE SECOND DAY,IT RAINED PRETTY GOOD..THIS IS DICKY BETTS & GREAT SOUTHERN..SEEN THEM PLAY THE DAY BEFORE, I CAPTURED IT ON MY CAM GREAT SHOW ,IN THE RAIN ... SO WITH LITTLE SLEEP .ON THE TOP OF MY TRUCK .I ROLL OVER AND STRAIN MY EYEBALLS,OVER TOWARDS ARE FAMILY TENT.AND ,.I SEE A WAKE -N- BAKE IN PROGRESS ....AND THER WAS DUANE BETTS WITH A BIG BLACK EYE, I SAID GOOD AFTERNOON .WERE DID YA GET THAT BLACKEYE FROM .. HE SAID MY OLD MAN

  • Listen to Fillmore 71. Most of the best stuff from "u don't love me" is Dickie. He always played right channel, Duane left in stereo. some of his best stuff. Most think it is all Duane on that song. If that doesn't do it for you, dig his intro to liz reed. My fav is prolly his killer solo on one way out. Naw, that sucks!!! OK, his blistering solo in Jessica. Or Jelly, Jelly...or Southbound...or Ramblin man...or his dobro on pony boy...

  • The man signed my guitar ,humble ,great ,real founder ,super nice guy ,hell of a guitar player ,one of my true hero;s of rock, blues, jazz, and country to boot

  • Wow, I love Dickey Betts,..but this is horrendous crap.

    Just how drunk was he?

  • there are a few flashes of greatness, but dickeys solo was drunken and spastic.

  • Agreed, I lost all interest in the Allmans when they lost Dickey and Warren. Besides the Dead have a WAY better drummer in Kruetzman than the allmans ever had, so the Dead with Warren is the future, not to mention Weir and Lesh kick so much butt, its downright silly. Way more rounded than just the same ol blues.

  • christ! from 16 sec to around 26 he wasnt even close to being in key....he must have been really messed or forgot where to play for a bit...

  • @johncartelli > as an old, old fan, I woulda been really pissed if I took the time out to see a legend like Dickey and been assaulted with that slackness. Pathetic. He's got mountains more talent than he's allowing himslef to deal with. C'mon, brother, get it together. Crack, or whatever it is, is for sidewalks, not stages.

  • Sometime when you keep bumping heads it's time to move on. Dickie was part of the sound and he will survive. He is great and is one of the early pickers that paved the way for todays southern rockers and should be remembered for that. He is still awesome and I enjoy him and the ABB.

  • I kind of think of the ABB now like the count basie orchestra or something. different players all the time but sticking to the sound that got them there. Without dickie it is different though. He was like the spark plug that made the engine run hot to me.

  • You cant pick sides, the Allman Brothers will never be the same without Dickey, or Duane. But hey they got replaced by two of the best replacements ABB could ask for.

  • Sorry to say but I totally agree with quite a few of the posts here. Most or all the magic that was the Allman Bros. kinda died when Dickey Betts left the band. It was hard enough to replace Duane, which by the way, they NEVER could, let alone Betts who IMHO penned their greatest songs. It's sucks that shit like this happens.

  • Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks are SPECTACULAR guitarists, I mean them no disrespect at all, but the ABB isn't the ABB without Dickey, you know?

  • love this stuff

  • spectacular!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • SHIT HOT!!!!!

    Thanks for great post!!!!

    Mook

  • The Allmans suck without Dickey . I have been to a few post Dickey Shows and they are now the equivalent of a lounge act. What have they made 1 album in almost 10 years since booting Dickey ?There worthless to me now. Damn Them because I was a huge fan and now I can't be bothered with a ABB concert again.

  • @beersplease

Yeah, its like a jazz improv session more than a rock concert now. Some may like it that way but I preferred them with Dickey.

  • Sad thing about Dickey, he must have really messed things up to get canned from the ABB...I know, his drinkin', but can you imagine the Stones w/out Keef? I'm still pissed Mick Taylor quit--they haven't been the same since, and neither have the Allmans since they fired Dickey...and I don't care how good Derek is, they lost their soul when they got rid of Dickey--good luck to him and all the best!

  • I love Derek & Warren and I think they are GREAT players, but I rather see them in there own bands (Gov't Mule & Derek Trucks Band)..........The ABB without Dickey just has no heart & soul to me!!!!!!!

  • @sccouple2427 agree wholeheartedly.

  • @sccouple2427 Your missing out man.

  • I have seen the ABB live 4 times now and everytime i see them i think they sound awesome, dickey or no dickey, its still amazing musicians playing amazing music

  • @scotchiedude ; I guess there was some wife beating and other things involved. But you're right, ABB isn't ABB without Dickey.

  • @scotchiedude DRINKING????????????????? he beat his wife like she owed him money.(she probably did..lol)...they had numerous reasons..drinking..beating women...coke...i adore him still...one of the best

  • @scotchiedude

He had a loaded 45 to his wife's temple because she found and threw away his heroin and coke

  • that's dickeys kid on the right...pretty good guitar player too

  • Sure, he is using Duane licks...in this song. But he also has a recognizeable style that is completely his own, (mainly using major pentatonic scales with the fourth thrown in for color... if you are noticing his choice of notes), and that is what puts him on equal footing. I personally like playing the blues more in Duane's style, but I do not like the way Dickey is cast aside as inferior by many fans that adore Duane. But everyone has their preference.

  • Maybe the greatest clip on youtube

  • ahhhhhhhhhh, that did me good !

  • And piss on Rolling Stone.

  • who was that lass ?

  • Twinkle Schascle

  • You got that right.......To put Dickey Betts at #56 (I think) was just Ludacris.......I stopped by subscribtion after that issue........and I though Duane Allman should have been #1 hand down

  • u r dam right!

  • @sccouple2427 No shit Dirk Cobaine or what ever he fuck his name is, was voted like the 5th greatest guitar player of all time. I guess they forgot about the other one million other players including my cousin who nobody except his mother has heard of. I mean really! Kirk Cobine better than Johnny Winter!!!!

  • @sccouple2427 no man,Hendrix at no.1 was CORRECT

  • @gittahfiend.............You know what they say about opinions........"everyone has one"............I'll take Duane Allman ANYDAY over Hendrix!!!!!!!!

  • @sccouple2427 agreed and I'll take dickey over duane anyday.

  • @sccouple2427 duane not here man sorry

  • He's no joke thats for sure.

  • the only thing Dickie Betts has done wrong musically is not die young. he totally smokes and is an original...in no way second best to Duane

  • how is it that that man is not considered to be wat he IS, actually ? one of the best guitarists of them all!

  • Dicky Betts - Hats Off 2 U...Always amazing...saw you in 2005 in San Francisco - great show. D. Betts is one of the best...1000% SOUL...TIMELESS...GREATNESS...

  • Where in SF did you see him, GGP NHSBG?

  • One of the best of all-time; this man melded blues, jazz, southern rock, and country into one kickass style

  • @CoreyRobertson2 I agree but Duane had something to do with it also, i'm sure.

  • Does this remind anyone of Texas Flood by Stevie Ray Vaughan??? Because I'm hearing it, Dickey is deff. doing that Stevie/ Albert King thing but with his own original twist on it.

  • When he is "warm" and focused, he is such a great guitar player, slide or no slide. I trust you all have his "Instant Live" album?

  • Man he is good. He knows so many styles of music.

I've seen him play blues,Country Southern Rock Old western type stuff. He can play anything and any style

  • and Jazz

  • dickey proving again he is one of the most underrated guitarists... see where rollin g stone ignorantly ranks him on their list.. ramblin man, jessica, and blue sky to name a few.. dickey betts and the ABB was and is somethin special

  • dont forget even better. IN Memory Of Elizabeth Reed, Les Brers In A Minor, and High Falls. some of the allman brothers most beautiful instrumentals.

  • He plays better drunk than most of today's younger players sober.

  • Sadly, I think he was kinda loaded that night. Dickey Betts is one of my heroes, but that tour was--and it pains me to say this--terrible. When he keeps things together, he's still as good (actually better) as he was in 1971. I saw a show he did in Jax Beach in May '02 where he probably had as good a night as I've ever seen him have (and I've seen him probably + or - 100 times).

And he is--definitely--one of the all-time greats.

  • Well said

  • people who dont like dickeys playing are clueless to everything, cause hes great.

  • Dicky has had his personal demons over the years but if you listen carefully and watch the band he's just playing dumb and then pulls if back for a bit showmanship the audience seems to get it.

One of the all time greats

  • awesome

  • This blues DON'T suck. I'm maby young, I'm maby unexperienced, but I'd heard whole lot of musicians playing blues worse than him. And if he's southern musician, famous for his melodic tunes, than better for him that he's makeing tribute to good old blues each now and then during his performances. And few words to all of his critics: try to do more for modern music than Dickey did, then you'll be allowed to criticise him, for now, just shut up, please.

  • Dickey Betts is 64 years old now and has been touring for over 40 years. He's still playing great for his age and there aren't many American originals left like him. Enjoy while it lasts folks just as he obviously does...Long live the Ramblin' Man!

  • Well said....Dickey has forgotten more than most will ever know about the guitar!!!!

  • If you like blues, Dickey is playing standard blues in standard form...not what Dickey is famous for...he is famous for his melodic vibrant melodies, so when he plays that style maybe folks will like him better...I think he is playing just fine...but I prefer when he plays melodic.

  • Who knows what his problem was, but his start was poor. When he got into it he was like his old self. You would have done better posting just the second half instead of getting all this criticism.

  • blues are supposed to be sloppy...get a grip
