wow I'm thinking of doing homestay if I go to study abroad in Japan in the fall. I'm taking my 2nd level japanese and I hope I have enough vocab ready to converse with my new family. I'm sure you were nervous but I can imagine it's fun at the same time right? haha. I hope I get along with mine too :)
I'm going on a 4 and 1/2 month home stay trip and I'm really nervous. Are there any tips you might have for me in regards to how to act (I know the basic Japanese culture and behaviour) but some first hand experiences that you made mistakes on might help! Thanks!
@KowaiTori oooh.. Well you will find EVERYONE to be really nice! I didn't come across one rude person (besides on the train in the morning maybe.. THAT was crazy.. rush hour-could barely move!!)
Maybe don't do what I did with my other host family (who were very traditional, unlike this one)..They took me to a restaurant and offered me some weird noodle soup thing with fish eyes and all sorts in it :| I didn't want to try it.. haha.. So you should try whatever they offer you! :-)
So, what will I do if I don't like what they offer me (after I've tried it, can I turn it down?) I have a 1 hour 10 minute commute to my school! HOLY GEEZ
Well I have learnt Japanese for about 7 years. So I knew a bit when I went over there..and it was a school trip too. Some spoke English, some better than others. It was hard to order food from McDonalds. lol
haha Yeh some of it. I have learnt Japanese at school for about 7 years. But there is still a lot I don't know. Sometimes I was just like... waaaaat? haha
haha yeh we only learn basics at school. Well it's starting to get a bit more complicated with my last year at school.
Not really a study group, but anyone who takes Japanese as a subject in years 9 or 10 could apply. About 22 of us got selected. We went sight-seeing and yehhh :)
sooooo awkward.....

Yeah you can . They realise that their food may be unusual for you..I did turn some food down. I felt bad but they were absolutely fine about it!

I've been thinking about doing one of these homestays, but I'm really nervous and I think it would be really hard to study while I'm over there. :(
How old were you when you went?
