that firelane was not setup properly and infringed on the stage loading zone. so next time, make comments about things you know about. were you there? no? I was. As a city planner I can tell you the firelane was setup illegally (no access for the stage). Should the guy have paid his fines? yes. should it have come to this? no way!!!
I was there, the fire lane did not allow enough area for loading onto the stage (a design flaw). The car however was (legally) squeezed into an area that was not a fire lane (no yellow lines). She ticketed him anyways (the bylaw officer and driver had a bad history. The city should have provided a proper loading zone for the stage. Also the "fire lane" was more then double wide, you could have driven 2 firetrucks side by side down that lane and still have passed his vehicle!
the video "Vernon Peace Rally Bylaw Shenanigans" actually shows he was legally parked. the concrete sidewalk the kid on the lower right is standing on is actually the stage loading pad (where you're supposed to load to the stage)! The yellow lines stop before the pad and doesn't begin again for another 15-20 feet (the zone his car was in).

I was there, the fire lane did not allow enough area for loading onto the stage (a design flaw). The car however was (legally) squeezed into an area that was not a fire lane (no yellow lines). She ticketed him anyways (the bylaw officer and driver had a bad history. The city should have provided a proper loading zone for the stage. Also the "fire lane" was more then double wide, you could have driven 2 firetrucks side by side down that lane and still have passed his vehicle!

the video "Vernon Peace Rally Bylaw Shenanigans" actually shows he was legally parked. the concrete sidewalk the kid on the lower right is standing on is actually the stage loading pad (where you're supposed to load to the stage)! Honestly, it's tough. Even though this was a peace rally and no one was trying to hurt or kill the police, irrational people will not allow you to deal with them in any way except total compliance with their idea. It all started with "Please move your car."

Totally, the police got very irrational, they needed to let him move it or let him keep it there, and just ticket him in the mail. Arresting was ridiculous. It's just a car in the wrong spot!! The bylaw cop could have just asked him to park on the grass. They do that at most rallies and festivals. I think this screams discrimination. Cops don't like hippies, plain and simple.

True but it's shame that the term "police brutality" is thrown around too often. In the same regard, people will always be testing the system and breaking the rules to see how far under "the man's" skin they can get so they can scream "police brutality." Vicious cycle. It's true, the peace people were disobeying the laws, which was unnecessary, you're right. But the thing that was wrong was how much force the police used without reason (and the mace etc.). As for how the whole conflict started, it was just a huge overreaction by everyone. No one was at fault but our own egos. What I was referring to was the unnecessary violence.

I did not see any violence, I saw limited force to restrain a person.

Cold Truth: (Ironic name) The guy hanging on to his friend was just hugging him, there's nothing wrong with that I would have told him that he would just have to get in the car with his friend if he wanted to instead of straight up pepper spraying him. I would use force only after someone used force against me (if I was a policeman) and that's what they are taught, but obviously they don't all comply.I agree that it was not full out fighting violence, but it was violence nonetheless.

How many times would you have told him? 10, 50, 100
With him blocking a fire lane and his other 7 unpaid tickets, I believe he feels he is entitled to park anywhere he pleases, and no amount of warnings are going to stop him.
Did we watch the same video, or did you just look at the pretty pictures ?

Fact: The third time he was told to move his car, he complied, but the Bylaw officer snatched the keys out of his hands before he could actually move the car.

Fact: The 7 unpaid tickets are irrelevant, as they have nothing to do with the current situation of the Peace Rally.
Fact: Although where he parked was illegal, there was plenty enough room for a fire truck to get by if it needed to. He parked further off to the side intentionally so as to not block the lane.
Fact: He was "hugging his friend" not the police. Is it illegal to hug? Is it illegal to not want your friend put in jail?

as for the unpaid ticket, why not just do away with parking tickets, if people don't have to pay them and just let people park where they want .
As for parking off to the side with "plenty of room" in who's opinion, your or the fire dept. ?
No it's not illegal not to have your friend go to jail, it is if you try to stop the police from doing it.

CHT ; I'm just saying that the parking tickets had absolutely nothing to do with the conflict anyway, they found that out after. Anyway yes he was in a fire zone but so what? He didn't deserve to go to jail for it. And he tried to move when threatened but they wouldn't let him. YES what he did was illegal but it was a "minor" offense! No excuse to use weapons and violence.

LH, Even tho I can get you to see that everything he did was illegal, you can't seem grasp the idea of laws. Maybe we should do away with all laws, do away with Police too. I have never needed the police to protect me ! It was always the other way around anyway. May the one with the most guns win, for surely the police will not be around to interfere.

The point is not that the peace rally organizer did the extremely minor offense of parking in a fire lane, the point is that the police reacted in a violent and unnecessary manner. The whole thing could have been dealt with calmly and no one would have been hurt.
Yes we watched the same video. Maybe the pretty pictures are the only things that you're looking at? I didn't see anything pretty about the video at all.

I have worked with crowds and I understand where you are going with your defense, but if you had been there you would have seen that the situation escalated more because of the cops than the people who had disobeyed the law. The crowd didn't help the police's sanity much either but that's beside the point.

but they were not violent,so why does it justify being pepper spayed,that is ment for people that act violently not PEACEFUL people that wish to voice their disagreement with a situation,i have been at many rallies in london and seen non violent people getting smashed over the head including an old woman,all she had done is told a copper that he did not need to hit people like that,he then hit her on the head with a baton,she must have been at least 70,

even if you have been asked 50 times,tow the car and deal with it in a non violent way,if they then were violent towards the police it would be a fair reaction as self defence this clearly was not,as i have pointed out it is to be used in situations were the police have no other options,i.e. a man threatening them with a bar or the like.

dj, go to time line 1:40, they were try to tow the car that when the trouble started ! I imagined he tryed to stop the car from being towed, he was then arrested.
How come no video of that ? The police were stopped from completing their arrest, he then resisted arrest.
Do you know what a fire lane is and the important to have them clear is ?

BINGO! well said. RCMP have to deal with many things in their careeer that we do not see or hear about and to deal with people like this that believe they are above the law is frustrating. A peace rally I thought would be one to comply with the laws written and not try to interfere with good people doing their jobs! Try to help our police instead of pestering them!

I live in this area in Canada, people mysteriously die in their custody all the time. If they try to arrest you in BC you better look out, minor cases of gunshots to the head seem to happen. This isnt America, but its the same crap, we all live in a police state that exists to quell the growing dissent.

gary, I have been a biker for over 30 years, I know what freedom is. I had problems with the police when I was young and stupid. I grew up and got smart, some people don't grow up or get any smarter. Where is this fascist regime, myself and 20 million other bikers are ready to fight.
