Mine works great and also works with an Airlink101 wifi adapter (AWLL6075, often on sale for $10 at meritline com), so I didn't have to buy the official adapter.
The UI has improved a lot, but is still lacking a bit if you're used to HTPCs with XBMC. Like most stand-alone players this does not support stylized subs (they will display, just unformatted).
Since it's been released they've added things like HFS+ support, and you can even plug a USB DVD drive and watch dvds directly from there

how reliable is this player at playing 1080p mkv files?

Excellent. It doesn't skip any frames, etc, and has played every 1080 mkv I've thrown at it so far.

I like the video, good music selection. I just ordered my CinemaTube. I missed out of the September release, but i got in for the Oct 5th shipment. I am really looking forward to hooking this up to my 55" Samsung 120Hz LCD TV!
