Whatever it is, it only likes to eat meat , from the size described it probably nest in high places with good views, near water. I doubt it ever goes to the jungle floor unless it sees an opportunity for an easy meal. The is based on what people seen so far. If one were get near a nest I am sure one appear especially if it has babies inside. And I am sure it will very pissed off.
A recent broadcast of the "Flying Monsters" episode of MonsterQuest was something of a disappointment. There was only one valid sighting and that one was not shown or mentioned in the show.
So you we're searching for Ropens/Duahs? Have you seen any with your own eyes? I've heard these sightings are not rare at all, and they happen regularly!
I was on Umboi Island only two weeks: to short a time. My interpreter did see the ropen at a distance, but it was one hour after I had fallen asleep. The sightings happen regularly, but most natives do not stay up much at night, and nobody knows where to look on any given night. It is a rare creature when you compare it with birds or bats that are known about in Papua New Guinea.
I explored Umboi Island in 2004; but Paul Nation was on that island twice in previous years. His 2006 expedition was not to Umboi; it was on the mainland.
That sounds like the video recorded by Paul Nation (of Texas) in his late-2006 expedition deep in the mountainous interior of the mainland of Papua New Guinea. I interviewed him a few days after he returned to the United States. As far as I know, those 13-17 seconds of video have not been made public yet. They do not show any form or shape of the creature: just the bioluminescent glow.
A number of reports, from different areas of Papua New Guinea, suggest that the ropen eats fish. A few reports are of eyewitnesses who say that the creatures sometimes steal fish; but I have not interviewed those eyewitnesses myself, so those accounts are second-hand to me.
I took this video in Papua New Guinea late in 2004. I don't know if I can return ($).
I am trying to promote attention to the living-pterosaur phenomenon. These creatures are real. I interviewed about 17 eyewitnesses in P.N.G. and here in the U.S., I interview eyewitnesses by email regularly.
Almost without exception, all the living pterosaur investigators have no confidence in the standard models that include very ancient pterosaur extinctions. Since so many kinds of pterosaurs are represented by fossils, there were probably some extinctions. But for the past few centuries, we know of many extinctions that were caused by humans, so why not consider that some pterosaurs extinctions were also related to human interaction?
i saw the show destination truth and it was pretty interesting how this thing glows so ropenseeker can you add some footage from the ropen flying at night?
Two videos of ropen lights were recorded between late 2006 and early 2007. One was from Destination Truth expedition team (the 2nd). I have no permission to use either footage at present. I'll ask about it.
I was interviewed (in their Hollywood office) by two of the leaders of the Destination Truth team, before they left for Papua New Guinea. My real name is Jonathan Whitcomb. This series of investigations of living pterosaurs is no hoax or joke; it is for real.
The Papua New Guinea ropen episode aired last year (2007). I believe you will find at least part of that episode on YouTube (search with the word "ropen.")
I realize that this interview with Abram is less interesting than others. It shows, however, that the idea that ropens eat fish is more than just a legend. Abram saw a ropen fly down to the reef one night, and it stays near the surface as if it were fishing.
This interview was a little over two years before the Destination Truth expedition, which was early in 2007. This year's D.T. expedition team has not contacted me yet. I would like to speak with at least one member of their team.
You saw a rerun of the "Ropen" episode of Destination Truth. A number of visitors to Papua New Guinea have seen the "ropen light."
The Mandt Brothers (producers) interviewed me (Jonathan Whitcomb) in their Hollywood office when they were preparing to go on that expedition.

The glowing creature seen by this man is, I believe, the same species seen by those who describe a pterosaur-shape.

If Paul Nation (of Texas) and I can get funding for a major expedition, I'll have great hopes for videotaping this creature.
