When Kratos killed Ares the God of War, he drew power from an item dubbed Pandoras Box. When he released the powers from the Box to kill Ares, fear gripped Zeus. In order from anyone from inflicting his reign as king of the Gods, Zeus summoned the Blade of Olympus and told Kratos to draw all of his power into it in God of War 2. Zeus betrays Kratos by killing him

But the main reason Kratos is killing all of the Gods, is because they made him kill his family in God of War 1.
