  • malik b and the bad lieutenant go together like PB&J.

  • this song went straight from their lips to the Hip Hop HOF,thats why theres no record of it on any album :DDDDDDD

  • Too bad Malik B. got his drug problems and left (temporarily) the group, I really love his style!!!

  • ?love! Yo da man!

  • HOT!!!!

  • this is phat right here because of the emergence of the start of hip hop with a philly band with a old school pioneer that use xylophone

  • wat happen to hip hop roots tore this up wit my idol roy ayers not bad at all

  • whoooo hoooo hoooooo! this is butta! and the 4 people who disliked this need not only clean the wax out of their ears they also need to kill themselves!

  • Black thought & ?uestLove blow me away!

  • Hot shit baby...

  • Nuff memories of 90's era with this tune. Now this is hip-hop!!!

  • black thought so underrated the roots are to ill

  • This can be heard on wvrvibe.com the only internet station playing real hip hop and neo soul. Check it out!

  • This is one of the tightest, I'm sorry, let me try this again. This is one of the "TIGHTEST" tracks I have ever heard. Philly's own representin'.

  • Well, well, well..isn't this some dope shit!!

  • Roy ayers and the roots, amazing!

  • Its videos like these that emulate what HIP HOP is..No video chicks, no cars,no spinnin rims,no flashing fashions, no wanna be gangsta activity, or overexausted camera tricks thats been done over and over again..How natural it is to see mc's/musicians in black n white on the rooftop in Philly..? And!! U have Roy Ayers! are u serious? Legendary Roots Crew Forever!!! Big Up to all the Heads who support real hip hop!!

  • God bless ya, i've been trying to find this version since like '95!!!

  • ?uestlove's fro looked different back then

  • Seriously, The Roots and Roy Ayers together, can't get any better. It's heaven to my ears.

  • Classic I remember when this joint dropped copped it quick,"My style is like a cat from a 70's flick Black Thought" Damn I miss hip hop from these days.

  • dope video

  • i remember when i first saw this on rap city back then i went to sam goody to get it they didnt have it with the lack of outlets such as internet which didnt exist in 93? it was virtually impossible for me to get this cd with all the proceed remixes on it i didnt find this until 2002

  • (sigh) Wow so this what hip hop used to be before it got killed. SMH Well maybe its not dead but its on life support.

  • Malik B and Black Thought, Dynamic Duo!

  • Lyrically few can compare to Black Thought!

  • Ahhhh, Visions of The Cypha demonstating dialect in motion on rooftops, street corners and such....The 90's - Real Hip Hop, Peace -

  • @manwomanboogie ----Is your name a Q-Tip reference?

  • @KASLtja Hi KASLtja, Yes, i got my name from his song, ManWomanBoogie off of The Renaissance...That Brotha should have gotten alot of grammy's for that album.

    it was a Masterpiece...

  • the real roots. back when the rhymes ruled the roost.

  • damn this joint crazy

  • Been listening to these dudes since my discovery in 99'..one of my favorite groups..anybody that doesn't respect this group doesn't respect hiphop..Black Thought is the 3rd greatest rapper of all time behind pac and rakim..

  • @jliles27 Respect your opinion of course but Black Thought behind Pac & Rakim???? There's an odd one out of that list right there and I'm willing to bet pounds on the fact that it's the rapper that isn't from the East Coast!! LOL

Pac was an average emcee yo. Technical ability wasn't his strength, and you can't be G.O.A.T. on empathetic ghetto stories alone.

  • this my shit i got this on vhs....real talk thank u

  • This is the power of Cool..................!

  • The fact that ROY AYERS is on this is classic....

The Roots have been the REALEST!

    Respect..

  • Black Thought is one of the best hands down! From the Organix album to now, he has truly evolved as an MC.

  • not only are the roots unique from a lyrical standpoint... but look at how natural they look as they perform this video

  • Blackthought, the most under rated rapper, 10,000 better then lil weezy can ever hope to be....

  • It just does not get any better than this.....

  • The Roots are the TRUTH!!

  • WTF, I NEVER KNEW THIS EXISTED!

I'm surprised the world didn't implode when they laid this down!

Oh fuck this is so molten...

  • @DanielDumile OF COURSE YOU DID NOT KNOW BECOZ YOU HAVE NO BRAINS

WAIT UNTIL I COME TO BEAT YOU UP IN THAT PET STORE AND YOU CRUMBLE WEAKLING FUCKIN LOSER

ARGUING FROM BEHIND A COMPUTER IN YOUR MOMMY S BASEMENT. COWARDLY FAGGOT

    CHECKMATE BUDDY I AM SUPERIOR

  • Dull? I see it more as chill and mellow.

  • WHo can still rock sh@t like this with all of them playin instruments expcept black thought as the MC

  • You are pretty fucking ignorant. They're ALL musicians. In this song, Questlove plays the drums, hub plays the bass, Kamal, plays the keyboard, Rahzel beatboxes, and Black Thought and Malik B MC. Also, you're pretty close-minded if you think you have to play a live instrument to be a musician. It takes talent to make electronic music and hip hop too.

  • You are correct in a big way. However, many so-called hip-hop producers only know how to press buttons on an MPC and don't know the difference between a xylophone and a saxophone...

  • @grandpasun I'd wager that half the so-called Hip Hop producers you are referring to that "push buttons on an MPC", wouldn't be the type of producers that would even know what an MPC is, let alone chop up samples/sounds & instrumented recordings and build a track up using one.

All the producers that I know of that use the MPC, have a very detailed & sonically superior knowledge of instrumented music. They've usually come from families with musicians. Pete Rock & J Dilla to name but 2.

  • @kax61 Questlove-Drums

    Kamal-Keyboard

    F.Knuckles-Percussion

    Captain Kirk-Guitar

    Owen Biddle-Bass

    Damon "Tuba Gooding Jr" Bryson-Sousaphone

    Black Thought-MC

How are The Roots "untalented individuals"?

  • @Great0ne1

Don't leave out Malik B., (forgive me if i misspell) he was sick when he was with the roots.

  • @TXFC3 Malik B is affiliated with The Roots, like Dice Raw for instance. They're not with The Roots 24/7

  • @Great0ne1

Well I think Malik was permanent member but he ended up breaking off from them for a while do to drug problems.

  • @aunicornist He was permanent at one time, but currently he's just affiliated with The Roots

  • @Great0ne1 hey your wrong, Malik B. was a part of the roots from "do you want more?!?!" to "Things fall apart" then he got arrested for drug related charges. Not sure why he didnt join back full time when he got out but thats why on game thoery and rising down he's a feat. MC , if you look on the back or in the book on do you want more-things fall apart he's listed as band member. check your facts son!

  • @Pharoahe13 Look, didn't I say that Malik B WAS a permanent member of The Roots at one time. You need to fully understand what someone says before you make a premature comment son!

WAS= Past, as in not currently

  • @Great0ne1 yeah i didnt see the other posts but you first post didnt say "was".

  • love the way they in the cypher ill classic shit

  • Whatever happen to Malik B.????? I thought he was nice with his.

  • @DarkHalo08 Malik is dope, pretty sure he had some troubles with drugs listen to the song Water it's about him

  • Malik is sorta in and out with his now. He is a VERY good Emcee however. But he doesn't like to tour at all.

  • This is hip hop at its rawest

  • Yes!!!!! Roots true Crew

  • hands up for the real ish !!!

  • the roots are live! this the furthest thing from backpacker music there is

  • the roots keep it real fo sure

  • ♥

  • Shits still chillin!

  • Man I love the way Thought puts his ryhmes together, you don't know what he's going to say next.

  • I dont label them backpack conscious etc this is hip hop

  • Get lifted then start a cypher, thas the Roots crew I know.

  • backpacker music

  • Comment removed

  • roy ayer is the man....mix with the roots.....amazing

  • That's what I'm talking about.... Real Classic Hip Hop!!!

  • The Roots don't get worse, they just evolve. You have to respect them for being creative. One of the few bands to have live musicians in the band. Even if you don't like the albums as a whole, you can pick gems off of each album!

  • Damn, perfect comment of the year right there

  • nas and black thought should do a album together. they would smash the whole rap scene. lil wayne and all these other clouds could reitre after that album

  • @sm101nbg that sh-- would be HEAT

  • @sm101nbg totally agree...

  • nas would fit in this one too...the beat reminds me of the illmatic album* 5 stars+ added to my favs

  • Out of all the many Proceed versions this one is my favorite!!!

  • @DarkHalo08 For sure, better than the original I think.

  • Awesome song awesome video

    Enter the black thought!!!!

  • aww man, this is CLASSIC shit, no doubt! the roots are legendary for me! 5!

  • The Roots: Home Grown! The Beginner's Guide to Understanding the Roots, Vol. 1

    or

Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool

  • @MissConception1717

It originally was one of the many b-sides to this single!!

    All of them are classics!!

  • CLASSIC!!!!

  • so am i the only one that like rising down? sure its no "things fall apart" but i would rather them expand creatively as muscians than keep making illadelph halflife 10 times in a row

  • Word Up on expansion and growing but Ever since Things Fall Apart I haven't really liked a Roots Album. I have all of them and have seen them three times though.

  • @halfrosamurai the music reflected the time ...painful, desperate, angry-ish, i respoect it I just dion't want to re-live it

  • I liked illadelph better than things fall apart.. myself.

  • Yep I agree they got worse every album. Part commercialising.

  • They don't get worse. They change and try new things. I think they gain and lose fans with each album.

Game Theory was better than Phrenology and Tipping Point, but Rising Down was worse than Game Theory.

I have high hopes for How I Got Over though.

The Roots are and forever will be the greatest. They are LEGENDARY.

  • @AnnaNeemus I love it all from organix to, the one comin, How I Got Over

  • sick beat sick video sick lyrics

  • The Roots progressively get worse as time goes on. Their early stuff was and is amazing though.

  • Their newest album was pretty fucking bad, I agree, but I'll have to disagree with you because The Tipping Point before it is one of their best albums.

  • Also Game Theory was pretty decent.

  • as a roots fan, i do agree. i havent purchased a roots cd since things fall apart. they need to get back to the organix

  • of course im kidding you guys smoke crack

  • nah, your just a homo

  • cant remeber that i ever be a homo?

dont you confound it with your self?

  • cant remember that i ever smoked crack...

  • on sabbatical

    went fishin

    caught nuthin

but i took THE ROOTS, WALTER MOSLEY and

and some of that amber colored sonny Chiba. i must have spent 15 hours listening. straight bananas son

  • MissConception1717...ok ok i get that..nice name!

  • thanx, i quite like it myself ;)

  • malik is a beast

  • funkiest shit eva...

  • Pure hip hop, period!

  • i think this song and Silent Treatment have got to be my favorite Roots songs of all times. the base line and xylophone make this shit. and lets not forget about the lyrics...

  • Look At Hip Hop now

    What happened?

  • dope

  • Thank you hip hop; and thank you Roy ayers!

  • I haven't seen this since forever. This was from one of those "Red Hot + __" albums back in '94 but it's also on their "Home Grown" compilation (Vol. 1).

  • this is what hip hop is supposed to be like

  • That is classic Hiphop!

  • I agree with u guys!

  • one of the best jams ever done

  • dude i just thought of something qtip with the roots

  • peedi crack needs to be part of the roots.....i'm from the west and it has nothing to do with this real video

  • all then philly boys sound good when they with the roots...they sound way better its ironic

  • Y'all notice the piano from "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" in there?

Wow...I never heard this version. I like it! Smooth stuff!

  • Love the melody that Black is spitting on. So mellow, so smooth. And Black is getting off on it too. Love this!

  • Thanx for tha upload

  • sounds like a tribe called quest beat , not comparing but just saying though , calm down internet nerds lol

  • love that vibraphone :)

  • Shalom...Seriously nostalgic here! Proceed, silent treatment etc. Classics. I wish music was still this way! I'm all in my b-girl stance:) I looooove B Boys

  • these aint no damn backpack rappers

  • Real hip hop!

  • Roy Ayers in the video

sick & got a old school vibe

  • First of all...this is an incredible record. The Roots were cool. I loved them from the start until I saw a gig they did about 5 years ago. It wasn't what I had expected, I got pretty disappointed, that's all.

  • why'd u get disappointed?
