G.55 was a very underrated place. At high altitude it was just about the best. The Luftwaffe wanted to adopt it. Kurt Tank, the designer of the FW-190 said it was the best plane in the Axis inventory.
@dzdz80 Kurt Tank actually looked into producing this plane in Germany with a even more powerful engine, but the industrial situation in Italy and the fact that it took over twice as many man-hours to build the Fiat over the Bf109, it just proved unfeasible at the time.

E' vero il 2005 Sagittario era davvero un aereo eccezionale e pare che dei pochissimi esemplari prodotti , ancora piu' pochi fossero stati messi dai CRUCCHI a difesa di Berlino
il 2000 non era poi cosi male era sicuramente meglio di una classe avanti al g50 cr42 mc 200 a parte il motore suavera pecca il piaggio p11 copia mal riuscita di un motore alleato ma si sa noi non avevamo i mareriali x fare motori di elevata potenza e affidabilità a proposito conobbi un ex pilota di 2000 virava + stretto dell'urricane..

il criterio di valutazione considerava la robustezza della cellula e sopratutto la sua suscettibilità a essere prodotto in grande serie...e in questo il centauro era superiore al 2005! certo che però apportando qualche modifica alla cellula e seguendo l'evoluzione dei motori Daimler-benz il 2005 sarebbe stato secondo uno dei migliori caccia di tutta la guerra.bellissimo ,potente,veloce,e maneggevole avrebbe creato molto problemi agli spit e ai mustang!!!
be quando i tedeschi dopo l'8 settembre provarono i caccia italiani (per stabilire se, e di quali mantenere la produzione) al fiat diedero valutazione "eccellente" (tra l'altro lo giudicarono il migliore caccia dell'asse del periodo, quindi compresi 109 g6 e 190a6) al 205 e al 2005 diedero giudiziono "buono";
Eccolo qua il miglior caccia italiano,se non di tutta la seconda guerra mondiale.Chi dice che le migliori cose ce l'avevano gli alleati e' un idiota.Noi italiani ce l'avevamo ma non abbiamo potuto o saputo sfruttarle,(vedi le Littorio).In africa siamo stati sconfitti per i rifornimenti,in marina avevamo una grande lacuna la mancanza di portaerei,e in aeronautica la nostre industrie non ce la facevano a sopportare le richieste.Le cose le abbiamo capite sempre troppo tardicome del resto accade ora

This plane its beautifull, my grandpa was in the crew that flew to itally to see this fighters in action, and he told me that they looked like a refined version of the 109s, i guess becouse of the engine. Nice vid man, just a little short XD
If this planes, the Reggiane Re-2005 or even the japanese fighters Kawasaki Ki-61 Tony and/or Kawanishi NiK2J Shiden had been produced in Germany to take the Me-109 place,from so soon the prototypes flown,being so more refined in design,with more wing area, and with more guns that was possible to install in 109 without this lost performance and maneuverability,the allied bombers fighters no way wouldn't have had easy life in German skies.
@LeoAndRas It would have had an equally bad life as the me109. Axis airforce was by far outnumbered and numbers do count in air battles! Particularly when taking on hundreds of bombers at once!

I did read this comment in a book about Luftwaffe WWII warplanes published in my country,Brazil,with authorship of the british Alfred Price,speaking that german WWII warplanes were mostly users of diesel oil in its engines.
Excellent museum on the scenic Bracciano Lake. Its a shame they couldn't have placed the G55 in a more prominent position. Nice footage. I'm planning on making a Special Hobby 1/48 model of the G55A.

I reckon the plane was in fact "restored" to a G.55, coming from a G.59 airframe.
As for the colours of the wheel wells, I don't know.
