Your characterization of Jacob is so unbelievably misguided. You leave out every detail that contradicts your theory for the sake of convinience. He didnt steal Esaus birthright, He only tricked his father in order to avoid being robbed by Esau, Jacob tricked Lavan??? When?? You have spun a life of victimhood into a life of aggression. I really like the illustrations - but to suggest that the being Jacob wrested with was Esau just doesn't make sense, given the context - why would Esau bless Jacob, and change his name? Why would Jacob say "I have seen God face to face and lived" - ? Consider parallelism - the "man" says "why do you ask my name" and then leaves - in the story of Samson, we read that "the angel of the Lord" said "why do you ask my name, seeing it is wonderful?". This is none other than the angel of the Lord.

First of all, it was GOD with whom Jacob wrestled and it was not any sort of evil or adversary as such... Jacob, had struggled all his life to prevail, first with his brother Esau, then with his uncle Laban..Now as he was about to reenter Canaan, he was shown that it was with GOD that he must "wrestle". GOD came in such a form that Jacob could wrestle with HIM successfully, yet HE showed Jacob that He could disable him at HIS will. Finally, Jacob learned that every blessing must come from GOD

It's a great insight. Very unique. I don't think you need to make Jacob out to be this egoist in the first part of his life. How can you jump to such a conclusion about one of the greatest men in our history? If you know the quality of any tzaddikim, there are many who are as righteous in their youth as well as old age. Jacob was no less. The challenge you might find worthwhile is to try and see how these Biblical characters were completely righteous.

@chunahy and that is the great difficulty with the different thoughts on the qualities of tzadikim...one thought is that they are completely righteous throughout life, always aligned with the HKBH; the other that occasional mistakes are tempered with a talent for tzhuvah and humbleness. actually, the truth is that the 'angel' wasnt a 'benevolent angel, but the personification of evil, the patron angel of eisav, the adversary himself.

yes, commentaries teach that the 'man' was satan, the patron angel of evil esau (eisav)
