Jack is One of my top three favorite guitarists. Sometimes it isn't about "shredding" and playing hot licks no one else can play. Jack doesn't do that. I like him because he comes up with this stuff on his own. I like him becuase he really feels what he is playing. In every video of him I see this. Thats why he is such an amazing musician.

I think that when he say's he a 'decent guitarist' he's modestly only talking about his technical proficiency, and he's probably got it about right. Clearly the way he uses that proficiency is pretty amazing. He seems to be able to express a feeling of 'desperation' at times and that connects pretty well with a lot of people.
I do agree that to create great music a certain mindset is required, just like to be a great athlete you need to have great physical skill. Its all about one's personality. That said, there are many many many people who could make it big in music if they just pick up the guitar or took it more seriously. And there are many people who could be phenomenal athlete, yet choose not to be. The brain, like any other "muscle," can be trained, and its skills refined.

He isn't just being humble when he says that though, he is being honest. He is a decent guitarist, and he is fine with that. I'm fine with it too. You should be fine with it.

All of those players are great players, but I wouldn't call them "normal guys". There is an intelligence they possess which cannot be learned. It seems you are saying that with enough training anyone could be the MVP of the World Series... OR with enough studying anyone can fully comprehend quantum physics... I agree 100% with squid and 300. It is not always about technical. Technical does not always make a sound a good one. Sometimes simpler is good and in that aspect this man is amazing.
Music is about conveying emotion in my opinion.... Which Jack White does really well.. So I think he is an awesome guitarist. To me it seems like these days people learn guitar just to impress people.. Instead of actually caring about music. That's my thoughts on if he's a "good guitarist".
i completely agree with you squid. i've been playing guitar for a long time and the best guitarists are the ones that put their soul into their playing. jack wants to show the duality within himself and loneliness of the blues in his guitar play. That raw sound makes him one of the best gutiarists.
I think Jack is decent, but a lot of what he plays just sounds like him smacking randomly at the strings. There's more to playing emotionally than going caveman on your instrument. Well developed mechanics and foresight can certainly improve ones ability to convey emotion.

Jack White is a great guitarist. He blends pop, rock, and heavy blues. His music is simple, though, that's the style he likes. Just because he doesn't play blazing fast solos doesn't mean he's not good. Get over that misconception.
Jimmy Page stuck to basics too my friend, he was one of the pioneers of the power chord. There are about 5 chord shapes that Page used 90% of the time.... Whole Lotta Love, Good Times Bad Times, Communication Breakdown... Even the intro to stairway is nothing super complex, and when it gets to the rock breakdown it pretty much delves into power chords again. Same with Over the hills and far Away. Why do people look at oldschool guitarists with such bias, like they are untouchable or something?

BUT... you still have to admit that what Page, and other power chord-heavy guitarists like Iommi, were doing at the time was totally new. Music is about conveying emotion in my opinion.... Which Jack White does really well.. So I think he is an awesome guitarist. To me it seems like these days people learn guitar just to impress people.. Instead of actually caring about music. That's my thoughts on if he's a "good guitarist".

i completely agree with you squid. i've been playing guitar for a long time and the best guitarists are the ones that put their soul into their playing. jack wants to show the duality within himself and loneliness of the blues in his guitar play. That raw sound makes him one of the best gutiarists.

I think Jack is decent, but a lot of what he plays just sounds like him smacking randomly at the strings. There's more to playing emotionally than going caveman on your instrument. Well developed mechanics and foresight can certainly improve ones ability to convey emotion.

I remember the first time I heard about Jack white years ago and people comparing him to Page, saying he's this day's Page. I'll never forget how dissapointed I was when I heard him. He may be a good song writer, but he's no guitar hero.

Come on guys, Jack White is the best this generation has seen yes, but he is no Jimmy Page. Until he writes a masterpiece like Kashmir, the Rain Song, or the Song Remains the Same you cannot say that Jack is on the same level as Pagey. He wrote Stairway to Fucking Heaven for christ's sake. Sure, Ball and a Biscuit is a good blues song, but it isn't Whole Lotta Love good. (yes, I know that Willie Dixon wrote the lyrics, but not that riff in E) He has a long way to go before he is Page status.

People always talk about playing with emotion too, how the hell do you gauge that? I know its pretty obvious when someone is robotic, or just standing there, but how can you expect to take White and Page, and then claim one has more emotion then the other? You can't measure that!

Jimmy Page stuck to basics too my friend, he was one of the pioneers of the power chord. There are about 5 chord shapes that Page used 90% of the time.... Whole Lotta Love, Good Times Bad Times, Communication Breakdown... Even the intro to stairway is nothing super complex, and when it gets to the rock breakdown it pretty much delves into power chords again. Same with Over the hills and far Away. Why do people look at oldschool guitarists with such bias, like they are untouchable or something?

I agree with you about the power chords, man. Yes, they were, and still are totally over-used. BUT... you still have to admit that what Page, and other power chord-heavy guitarists like Iommi, were doing at the time was totally new. If you think about it, Sabbath and Zeppelin essentially invented "heavy" music. Plus, with it may be simplistic in structure and chords, you have to admit that Zeppelin's music KICKS ASS! Am I right?

It's not about them being over-used or not, if it works it works. Power Chords just happen to have a special quality to them when distorted. And Zeppelin does kick ass. I'm just responding to someone who claimed that Jack White is a bad guitarist for being simple, and then went on to praise Jimmy Page. It's hypocrisy.
