Jon writes about what is happening in the world at the time. Back then, grunge music was the "it" sound. Plus, Kurt Cobain had ended his life in 1994. The songs on the "These Days" album are not particulary happy ones which I believe reflect what was happening at the time of writing for this album. I find comfort in this album when I'm in a depressive mood.

@MrDeathsweep3r I'm a fan, too, but as far as him not believing in Jesus--maybe he went through doubt during the "These Days" album (the whole album is kind of dark) and the lyrics refect that doubt. Who knows what his spiritual life is like now, though? It's been 15 years since this song was recorded--a lot can change in a person's life and outlook in that amount of time. Personally, I think it was brave of him to express such doubts; people can relate at some point in their lives.
