What is this? Hayastan selling a particular brand or (in Armenian) "vodj" of Armenian culture as somehow "authentic" in the diaspora. Isn't everyone sick of the same old songs and dances already? There are far better renditions of this song.

این هم اصل آهنگ و ترانه ای فولکلوریک از ارمنستان , که تعدادی از جوانان انقلابی چپ ، در آستانه سالهای پنجاه و هفت ، پنجاه و هشت با شعری به نام «سر اومد زمستون» در ایران رایج کردند و بیست و هفت هشت سالی مهجور و منکوب بود ، تا سرانجام بدل به سرود سبزجامگان طرفدار موسوی ، نخست وزیر پیشین نظام سرکوبگر اسلامی شود و... اندکی بعد تر به یکی از نماد های مبارزات مردم ایران برای آزادی و دموکراسی و حکومت غیر دینی ، زیر نام جنبش سبز مبدل گردد. عجب داستانی دارد این ملودی زیبای ارمنی!ـ

Well, the original singer of the song was not Ashot himself, but Lousik Gochian. And to be honest, I have yet to hear someone sing it as beautifully as she did!

Oh, it should have been way back when, late 1950s or early 1960s, when she was the star of Tatoul Altounian's ensemble (they were many of them: Lousik, Astghik Kamalian, Ophelia Hambartsoumian... That ensemble was maybe the most star-studded troup in recent Armenian memory). Gochian had the most peculiar voice: a ringing soprano, very well suited for folksy songs. One of her signature songs was recently digitized and can be found on a compilation CD titled "Made in Armenia"...
