  • Do you have any tutorials on kneading cause i kind of suck at it.:)

  • Do you always knead before forming the clay balls that you throw?

  • I have to say, I absolutely love your way of looking at art. I can definitely vouch for copying as being a fantastic way to learn.

Ok. enough commenting. I've got to get to practicing!

  • YES! Please do a whole class on lids, I have been having trouble making them. I do try to copy you that is how I'm learning to make pottery. Thanks for all your help and time, i just love all your classes. For some reason mine do not come out round, there is a hump in them. SAD Pottery in New Mexico

  • Two things: 1) Thank you for your wise and encouraging comments regarding copying. It's impossible not to copy your instructor. I shamelessly try to copy your approach and out turns some of my best work which, as you say, somehow has my own "spin" to it and 2) please, do a session on lids! Oh, there's a third thing: Sincere thanks to you for sharing so much of your heritage, time, and talent. A blessing!

  • How do I find the following video?

    Carla

  • Simon, I have a question for you.

How much grog do you use in your clay, if any?

I have 100 pounds of clay 75lbs has no grog, 25 has grog. I haven't used any of the groggy stuff yet.

  • @WHceramics about 10-15% grog or sand ,but at present i am using ready mixed clay bodies of different types,

  • @sleachpots Thanks! I will wedge in some of the grogged clay to see how that works for me.

  • That finger walk was really great!!! Thanks!!

  • Great video! I tried the shape (minus the lid) today , and it turned out nice :)

Then when I took it off the wheel, my hand slipped and made a huge dent in the pot. It's okay, though, I made it look somewhat intentional.

Thanks for the awesome videos! They really help.

  • ooohhh i'm in 10th grade, and i'm in ceramics... so much fun.... but it takes a ton of practice... he centered his clay so fast!

  • wow you're so passionate about this artform cool man.

  • it looks like ur making a dick at first

  • @BA418 are you sure? maybe you were just thinking about dicks while watching the video at first.

  • Different methods than I have been taught but the basic idea is the same... Trying to throw lidded pots recently.... they so far have been coming out looking like giant lego heads... this should help though

  • That's so erotic

  • i wana do that but with chocolate and then ill eat it

  • You make it looks so easy, Simon! :)

  • is it hard to do?

  • @MultiMasm Good well done ! have a go sometime and get hooked ! SL

  • u got magic hands

  • I also really liked what you said about copying because I have a hard time just drawing so I look for information and I always hear "well you're not being orignal" well I already am and like you said my version won't be the same as my inspiration so it's not copying- I'm doing my take on it. People shouldn't be afraid to look for inspiration!

  • @Cool07Star well said indeed ! Keep practicing ! SL

  • Hi Simon!

I'm 17 and I took Pottery in my highschool- I really fell in love with it (even though I wasn't that good at it) I'm thinking of joining a Pottery class and your videos really help to inspire me! :)

  • @Cool07Star classes will help you and give you some progress, a wheel at home to practice on when you can afford one is the way to go. SL

  • Thanks for talking about copying other people's concepts and techniques. I have to agree. Can you imagine if the first person to make a ceramic bowl said, "now nobody copy this!"

  • @afatdutch that's right ! none of us are 100% original I reckon ! we are all influenced by something or other along our life's pathway....whether it be God's creation, or someone else's work. Creative copying ! SL

  • man this is actually so captivating im pretty sure ill watch this whole video and i just stumbled upon this video LOL

  • looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool

  • Thanks again Simon, I love that shape too! Looking forward to the next clip on it...

  • Copying? Nah, we're just learning a new "technique" yeah, that's it, we're learning!!! LOL. . . After all we have to start somewhere. Works for me too.

Warm regards from Debbie in cold Florida

  • Hello Simon

Very interesting clip! Can't wait to see the end result, when it's facetted.

A clip on making lids? YES, PLEASE!

    Grtz

  • Hey Simon!

Have you given up on your "garage studio"? What is the problem? Is it too cold? You can get insulated doors for not too much money. My garage is a bit cold as well, but I added some rMAX panels to the ceiling and indoor/outdoor carpeting to the floor and it made a big difference (around $200). Wishing you warmth and good health in this new year,

  • @meredithpottery no I have not, just retreated inside a room in the house as it made more sense than heating all that outside space. Thanks for your advice. SL

  • Hi Simon,

I love your thinking almost as much as I love your ability to throw on the wheel. It is such a great challenge to imitate the best potters...yourself figuring amongst them. We would be fortunate indeed to be able to "copy" the wonderful potters that have worked over the years. Your advice to "keep practicing" may get us a little closer to pottery "plagarism" but not exactly there! The work will always be our own. Thank you and happy new year!

  • I'm so glad that you showed how to make the lid smaller if you opened it too far. I'm really enjoying you videos and eagerly await them each day or so. When I win the lottery I'm coming over to attend one of your classes. (from England)

  • your duck noise made me laugh a lot,

but hey i'm 18, i'm aloud to. aha

  • "Imitation is the sincerest (form) of flattery" Colton

  • Was that pot thrown or molded?

  • I agree, There is nothing wrong with using ideas or inspiration found in someone else's work. I myself find it flattering when someone uses an idea of mine or copies a piece that I have made.
