:) No expectations can be a really good start, me and my sweets have been married for 15 years now, met 18 years ago and both figured this relationship was impossible and very temporary and went ahead without any expectations just for the moment. We did not fit each others' bill in any way, yet, to our own surprise, found ourselves not at all interested in seeing other people any longer and there we were... We lived through some really tough times and are still growing in love, amazing!
I have to admit that I really like Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche's way of expounding the Dharma; nobody like Rinpoche can give Dharma teachings talking about the lack of plumbers while waiting on a queue for a broken toilet to get fixed, with his Dharma robe on his head :-) The message for me is simple: be practical. Be functional. If the Dharma cannot make us more practical and functional beings, what else can help us to deal with the absurdity of our self-inflicted neurosis?
Thank you for recording and publish this. Please let him know that these minutes problably were the most valuable this week, and his compassion can touch even trough this ""simple"" video. Thank you
Rinpoche is the one who knows the practical world and whatever said was completely out of knowledge and other experience. He has seen world and knows what world needs. I am completely blessed by rinpoche.
After I did my philosophy degree I went into building restoration as an apprentice stone mason and it was a disaster I destroyed more than I restored. Still it can be done- there is guy whose doing the roofing for the new college at Samyeling in Scotland who also studied philosophy.
Without scientific discoveries in physics there would there would be no electricians. All our modern technology has come from these useless phd types. Besides the scientists without idealistic young people we would have no Shakespeare and no Van Gough, instead a world full of plumbers. You need a mixture of people in society.
However, I think this video was about the balance of it all. As in nowadays, fewer people are interested in professions like being electricians or plumbers, because of which, a lot of young people who just came out of university are without jobs. Not to demean scientists at all.
@JuliusDolma I think it was me who advocating a balance I said you need a mixture. I don't think people are less interested, there aren't the apprenticeships. Youth unemployment is high in general not just amongst graduates. Its a short clip and I do get where rinpoche is coming from its just a I've heard the argument before. Wittgenstein used to encourage his students at Cambridge to give up their studies and do manual work instead.
@greenf0rd The essence/point that Rinpoche was getting at is, aim and do things that are within your capacity. Majority of people can't do a phd in Physics, but can be damn good plumbers and electricians. As to poetry, he's not saying don't do it - he's just saying be more practical and aim within your limits.
What's the use of dreaming about being EPL player if you have no talent? Life is struggle, and we should learn to accept certain things.
Such a wonderful video! We are awaiting Rinpoche to visit Gomde Denmark next year :)
