Among his peers I can only think of Kate Bush and Sade.

Prince doesn't owe anyone anything. He makes great music and that is all. He doesn't need to smile or be overly gracious to anyone. You're not buying a piece of him the person; you're buying the performer-the musician and he delivers that. He probably saw what people did to MJ all these years and said fuck everybody.
