  • you don't feel like Denver the last dinosaur should be on there?

  • @Beany695 Though it can't be denied that there are similarities, it would be rather difficult to conclude/prove that "Denver" was made to capitalize on Scooby's popularity since it was made in the late 80s.

  • Disclaimer: ripoffs displayed in no particular order of suckyness.

  • Hard to believe that Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, the same duo behind the original 1969 S-D eps (as well as scripting for Josie and the Pussycats and the Banana Splits) were also responsible for producing one of the CHEESIEST Scooby ripoffs in TV history called "Fangface".

  • Sorry for the bad pun intended, but Hanna-Barbera has milked this genre so much, I'm surprised they didn't create, like, a cartoon about four rich, preppy, mystery solving teenagers from Texas and their pet wisecracking heifer for a sidekick. "Daisy Moo, Where Are You?" or something to that effect.

  • LOL!

  • these aren't really rip-offs, just similar shows. it doesn't matter which came first. i still prefer jabber jaw and speed buggy over scooby doo.

  • You didn't read the video description, did you?

  • @Ixapter I love Scooby doo, but you are right these are terrible.... good lord lol.

  • I'd totally forgotten about the funny phantom until I saw this. I remember seeing one or two episodes as a kid and hating it.

  • And I named my dog SCRAPPER DOO...'D

  • Butch cassidy and the sundance kids :D

  • Already mentioned/considered. Elvis didn't dominate the show like Scooby dominated his.

  • 3 others that are not on the lists of the so called "Ripoffs" are Dynomutt: Dog Wonder, Amazing Chan And The Chan Clan, and Rickety Rocket.

  • Youtubers must not like reading video descriptions.

  • @Ixapter I understand where you are coming from, these shows were great from 1970-1979. Fangface and Rickety Rocket were from Ken Ruby and Joe Spears who came from H-B productions. I consider them more like "Copy Cat" shows. Amazing Chan and Clue Club had all the suspects meet up at the end until the real criminals were announced. You have your term of "Ripoffs" is okay by me no disrespect , and I have "Copy Cat" so we are even.

  • Okay, then. For the record I only saw ONE episode of "Rickety Rocket" and it was in Italian.

  • These ripoff are good but not great.

  • You forgot Jonsie and the Pussy Cats big ripoff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Maybe I should make the "Please Read Whole Video Description" box a little bigger.

  • Horrible shows! SCOOBY IS KING!

  • The only ones I remember are Jabberjaw, Speed Buggy, and of course Josey and the Pussycats (not on the list). If you were a child in the 90's/early 2000's STAND UP!!!

  • there not rip off if there made by the same people

  • I addressed that in the video description. That's why I said at the beginning, "READ WHOLE VIDEO DESCRIPTION, PLEASE". You DID see that, right? Or can't you read?

  • Of course if it wasn't for scooby doo these shows would never have been successful, but keep in mind all these 'rip-offs' are made by the same people! William Hanna & Joseph Barbera.

  • Why didn't you read the video description?

  • Seriously, don't you think I know that? Don't you think this has brought up before? This video has been here for over THREE YEARS. Why do you think I put that annotation at the front? And for the record, hardly any of these shows were successful. Most of them lasted for only one or two seasons.

  • Is the speed buggy one actually shaggy? It looks just like him but ive never seen it

  • No, he's just a look-a-like. His name is Tinker.

  • Thumbs if you all prefer Scooby-Doo to all these ripoffs!

  • omg they just riped off saw too (escape from mystery manor) watch it and youll see it does that you want to play a game moments with the life or death games trust me and just watch

  • In retrospect, Hanna-Barbera's heyday was definitely the 60s---Saturday morning cartoons were filled with super-heroes like Space Ghost, Birdman and the Galaxy Trio, the Herculoids, Mightor, Young Samson, and Shazzan. There were laser beams, energy blasts, fantastic worlds and great musical scoring by Hoyt Curtain.

The Violence Code of "concerned parents" reduced HB to produce season upon season of "hapless fun and adventure" with Scooby-Doo and its succeeding parodies. Their hands were tied.

  • Actually at the same time the fuss about violence on the shows was escalating, Saturday morning ratings were falling anyway; the superhero shows apparently had run their course. That would explain why "The Archie Show" and "Wacky Races" became successful in the next season, and why "Scooby-Doo Where Are You", a show that had comedy AND adventure, became REALLY successful.

  • Hey, the Shmoo has been around longer than Scoobie Doo. The Shmoo is over 100 years old. (ZOINKS!) Sorry, thought I'd add that. Other than that, your list is accurate.

  • This has already been mentioned several times. I'm saying the show is a ripoff, not the actual character. And hey, you don't need to apologize for saying that!:)

  • Too juvenile! We are talking about childhood cartoons right? BTW re: the Josie comment I thought I cancelled it (but apparently not) that's why I left the second comment.

  • And besides, I think the title goes well with my other video, "The Top Ten Scooby-Doo SPIN-OFFS".

  • @Ixapter *blah* i hated jabber jaw and still do when it comes on on boomerang. That stupid shark and the bitchy black haired girl

  • Love this list but ripofffs sounds harsh how about copycats?

  • A little too juvenile. By the way, please read the video description as to why I don't have Josie and the Pussycats listed.

  • Love this list but you could add JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS to the list making it a Top Ten.

  • They may have been rip offs or a chip off the old block, but which outlasted them all? Scooby Doo of course.

I did like Clue Club and Jabberjaw.

  • @jmb2nami Unfortunately, Rickity Rocket, a segment of the The Plastic Man Comedy/Adventure Show, was a flop. The 16 episodes were broadcast only once before the segment was dropped. I was disappointed, but glad to see it again over a decade later on Cartoon Network.

  • So, given their extensive credentials, find it VERY hard to believe Hanna-Barbera gave them their blessing to produce this ilk (and use the same voice actors on earlier H-B shows).

  • Funny, with how not only was Fangface a cheesy bona fide Scooby ripoff, but it was also created and produced by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, who also wrote all of the Scooby eps during its first two-year run (1969-71) and also wrote eps for the Banana Splits and Josie and the Pussycats, helped develop the Krofft Supershow, and also did some of the ABC Weekend Specials (Scruffy, The Trouble with Miss Switch).

  • I liked Jabberjaw the best of all these rip offs; I somehow thought it was funny, I still do.

  • I had almost forgotten about Fang Face and Schmoo lol this reminded me of them, I had very foggy memories of them. thanks for sharing! this is great!

  • @Jacknava2001 Fangface was even funnier with Fangpuss. Apparently, there were a board game and a record, among other collectables. The Shmoo had ben in comics for 2 decades before any of the cartoons had aired. Please check Wikipedia for more details.

  • Jabberjaw could actually be classified as a rip off of Scooby Doo and Josie and the Pussycats AND Rodney Dangerfield.

  • AND the movie "Jaws" (which came out a year earlier) AND Curly from the Three Stooges.

  • @ChuckTHEPOPe I used to think so too, but actually Hannah Barbarrah made all of above (Exept Rodney Dangerfield) So its not ripping off, it borrowing from their own work.

  • We KNOW Hanna-Barbera made them all. Please read the video description.

  • Don't forget the ripoff that started them all (and my favourite cartoon of all time): "Josie and the Pussycats". I kind of liked "Speed Buggy" for itself, too (though it was VERY similar to a "live action" show around the same time called "Wonderbug"...

  • Oh, I didn't forget (please read the video description).

  • @Ixapter Ah! Yes, that makes sense! :-) Where exactly do you think the formula of "oddly antropmorphic animal joins group of teenage sleuths who also are in a pop band" come from, anyway?

  • Before Scooby the concept never existed, but the Archie show, which featured teens who formed a rock band and had a dog, came a year earlier, was pretty popular and I guess H-B wanted to get in on that success. However, H-B most likely wanted to differentiate from Archie and use action and adventure in their show and so they used the mystery concept and made the dog (Scooby) the star.

  • @Ixapter (said in an adenoidal Archie voice) "And NOW, here's a new dance and song to learn, and sing..."

I believe they got the name "scooby Doo" from Frank Sinatra's song "Strangers in the Night"

  • In a way Scooby-Doo became a rip off of Looney Tunes at WB, since Carl Stalling's music became used. Okay, in Arabian Night, 1994, and thereafter, composer Steve Bernstein imitated that music. Very out of place, as WileK2009 has also pointed out.

  • captain caveman was awesome

  • 0:17 such a ripoff is just like a parody lol¡

  • Most Scooby Doo rip offs were created and written by Hannah Barbara, the same guys who created and wrote the SD cartoons. They saw that the SD concept worked and created these so called rip offs. Thanks for sharing, I love all of these cartoons and enjoyed them while I was a kid and I still do.

  • You're welcome, but I already knew all of that and I love them too. Didn't you read the video description?

  • Potsworth & Co was ACE! This end theme was killer.

I think us Brits liked it more than the Americans! CBBC must have shown it about a bajillion times between 1991 and 2004!

  • there not going to beat scooby doo and he's not very good himself..........or SHES not!!

  • They were all Scooby Doo ripoffs for sure, but I still enjoyed them all when I was a kid. Fangface, Captain Caveman, Goober and The Ghost were some of my favorites. I've now gone out of my way in making sure my 8 year old daughter loves these cartoons as well. Keep Saturday Morning cartoons alive.

  • Hear, hear!!

  • @24Midnighttoker Goober & the Ghost Chasers AND Funky Phantom, the complete series, are now available on DVD via the Warner Bros. Archives!! (

    (wbshop.com/Animation/WAANIMATION,default,sc.html). Fyi :)

  • All good shows in their own way.

  • In additon, I'll also explain Josie asnd the Oussycats doesn't count as:

It's more of a spy show

it's also a licensed show [from Archie Comics].

I'd compare Charle Chan with 1959 funny investigative HB Ca, SNooper, as both as adult characters [but coming out of the ptr-1962 funny category, and written by former WB writer Mike Mlatese, that whole early era of the late 50s is the "bomb" for me as far as TV cartoons go.]

  • What and Josie and the Pussycats were not the top nine? I am very surprised about that.

  • Didn't you read the video description?

  • My bad. I was just recalling Jump The Shark.com based on a comment somebody else made, now that i read the description. I seem a lot of these cartoons growing up and liked a lot of them ( Speed Buggy was a favorite next to The Funky Phantom). Honestly i also really got into Josie and the Pussycats, and i believe the cartoon was very much based on the comic books created by the same person who created "the Archies". The list indeed was very good. Thanks for publishing it.

  • And thank you for the compliment!

  • jabber jaws better

  • props man, I didn't think you'd get Captain Caveman or Fangface in there =)

  • Clue Club was alright to me it also had a cool theme song.

But Captain Caveman was the best one out of all the SD ripoffs.

  • You forgot the Chan Clan lol.

  • Read the video description.

  • how about scrappy doo

  • He's in the spin-offs. You'll see him in my other video, "The Top Ten Scooby-Doo Spin-offs".

  • @Ixapter HOW IS YOUR SCOOBY TIMELINE ?

    is this accurate

scooby doo where are you season 1+ 2

    the new scooby doo movies

    the scooby doo dynomutt hour

scooby doo where are you season 3

and where does scrappy doo come into the story ?

  • "Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo" comes after "Scooby's All-Star

    Laff-A-Lympics" (which contains "The Scooby-Doo Show"; that's

probably what you are referring to as "Scooby-Doo Where Are You Season 3).

  • @Ixapter actually " the scooby doo show" which has the theme song that starts-- we got it all together for a brand new show-- was part of the scooby doo dynomutt hour

according to amazon the season 3 of where are you is pretty rare stuff, and is sold indiviualy from the scooby doo dynomutt hour, the one i'm looking for is the laff a lympics but it doesn't seem to be out yet, thanks

  • "The Scooby-Doo Show" and Dynomutt continued on "Scooby's All-Star Laff-A-Lympics"; it was a two-hour package show featuring those two shows as well as "Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels" and "Laff-A-Lympics". I should have specified that.

  • @lowaces , the the laff a lympics is on DVD it came out in Jan 2010. I saw it at wallmart really cheap about 5 dollors.

  • all great cartoons

  • What about Josie & the Pussycats?

  • The video description will explain everything.

  • How did they forget the Amazing Chan Clan?!

  • Didn't you see the message saying, "Please read the video description"?

  • great video :D i knew something was up, ever since i was a kid. nice try hiding that one Hanna Barbera :P lol

  • Okay, The Clue Club is just a little too damn ridiculous. It's the same show!

  • Awesome toons. I have VHS tapes of "Goober and the Ghost Chasers" and "Fangface". Filmation and Hanna/Barbara 4ever!! Anybody know where to find the Muhammad Ali cartoon?

  • jabberjaw's not tat bad, i like their theme song. most of those shows are from Hanna-Barbera.

  • Yes, they are. That's common knowledge. And I never said ANY of them were bad.

  • schmoo was cool

  • you forgot josie and the pussycats.

  • Read the video description.

  • Have to say Scooby Doo is the best.Brings such good memories back.

  • @SHAZR64

    The dark ages of animation.

  • How could they be rip-offs? They we're made by the same company and i'm fairly certain, the same two guys...

  • So? As I've already stated many times before, that's beside the point. A ripoff by ANY creator is still a ripoff. I would have thought that everyone knew my position on this by now.

  • Well since most of those show are written or produced by Hanna-Barbera then they are actually scooby doo clones rather than rip offs.

  • I feel that the "clones" label, as I said earlier, is a little extreme. Quasi-clones, MAYBE.:)

  • I love Clue Club.

  • I thought for a second that you were going to list Potsworth & Co. here when I heard it's brilliant ending theme, but I'm glad that you didn't, as it was an original cartoon in its own right. Yes, it had the central canine character, but the similarities with Scooby-Doo ended there really.

Good list, I'd forgotten that many of these shows even existed! :-)

  • Thanks. Someone actually said that it was ironic that I left Potsworth out!

  • Such a nostalgic video. ^^

I especially loved the music track: Theme from "Midnight Patrol" (or "Potsworth & Co.", if you're from the U.K.). ^^

  • I'm going to go ahead and call Scrappy-Do a ripoff. Sure, he never got his own show, but any episode that he was in, I felt ripped off when I watched it.

  • The Chan Clan

Butch Cassidy and the sundance kids

    Partridge family 2200

    Brady Kids

    Josie & The Pussycats?

  • Read the video description, please.

  • in speed buggy the guy in green looks exactly like shaggy!

  • On a "Harvey Birdman: Attorney At Law" episode, Shaggy was in court and exclaimed, "That guy looks like me! And THAT guy looks like me!" And the cameras were pointing at Tinker and Clamhead (from Jabberjaw)! That was so hilarious!

  • Yeah I was gonna say that Tinker from speed buggy and Clamhead from Jabberjaws look like Shaggy. and Clamhead has the same last as Shaggy.

    Clamhead & Shaggy Rogers.

  • Some of these shows weren't even trying to hide the fact that they were ripping off Scooby Doo.

  • How is Amazing Chan and the chan clan a Scooby-doo rip off, it is based on the Charlie Chan movies. Scooby's voice actor did voice the dog.

  • Do you honestly believe for one second that "Amazing Chan" would have been made if mystery cartoons weren't the "in" thing at the time (thanks to a certain show that shall remain nameless)? I really don't think that youngsters in the 70s were exactly clamoring for a Charlie Chan (or Shmoo, for that matter) cartoon, let alone knew who he was.

  • These cartoons weren't meant to succeed. They were cruder than the Scooby-Doo stuff, and made to be sold to foreign TV stations.

The Schmoo show was aired in England in the late 1970's, and the Funny Phantom is still playing on Russian TV.

  • I admit that Jabberjaw and Buford were guilty pleasures when I was a kid. I remember when they teamed up in Yogi's Space Race.

  • "Clue Club" is by far the worst and closest rip-off. How is "Schmoo" really that bad?

  • None of them are bad (in my opinion), I just personally loved some more than others. Woofer and Wimper are just a hilarious duo.

  • As for "The New Shmoo", it is a fun show, but the use of someone else's character cost it a point or two (I know they took some liberties, though :)).

  • totally agree with you, Clue Club sucked ass

  • Does Hong Kong Phooey count (eventhough I loved that cartoon)?

  • Nope, Hong Kong is pretty much in a class all by himself. :)

  • You forgot Jose and the pussycats =P

  • ah NVM I forgot t oread the descritpion.

  • You're not the first. :)

  • Hanna-Barbera really had a habit of duplicating a winning formula. They also did the same with their 'funny animal' shorts with them borrowing from The Big 3( Yogi. Huck, and Quickdraw) to create other characters.

  • And when the Smurfs became a ratings smash, they followed with "Snorks", "Biskitts", "Monchichis", and "Paw-Paws".

  • And you are correct, I miss-spoke. I should have said 'most' instead of 'all' regarding their Hanna Barbara status.

God, I've got too much free time!

  • As long as you have fun! :)

You know, it's funny. This video is currently my second most viewed AND discussed one (after "Betty Is Even Better"). The ironic thing is that if I had used a term other than "ripoff" it probably wouldn't get as much attention as it is!

  • And with all due respect, "derivatives" sounds kind of dull.

  • I think the term 'derivative' would be more accurate than 'ripoff.'

The most common usage of 'rip-off' (in my experience) is defined as- exploitation, esp. of those who cannot prevent or counter it

While 'derivative' is- not original; secondary

Just my opinion but that sounds a little less condescending, mostly because I'm rather fond of some of these post-Scooby Doo shows... if for no other reason than their (relative) obscurity and exploration of the 'teen crime' genre.

  • I think 'rip-off' is an unfair term as these shows weren't intended to bilk or deceive anyone. These are all Hanna Barbara shows anyway; they were merely experimenting with a proven formula. I also disagree that none of these would have existed without Scooby-Doo. It's conceivable that the formula could have been exploited by HB with equal success with another show... another show that then had it's own derivatives.

  • Technically, Fangface is a Ruby-Spears Enterprises show, but I digress. I've said before that the "ripoff" label is quite fair. Besides, I didn't really know what else to call them; "copycats" is somewhat juvenile, and "inspirations" is a bit grandiose. And even you don't believe that none of these shows would exist if Scooby wasn't such a phenomenon, you surely have to admit it'd be unlikely. Thank you for your opinions.

  • Clones.

  • Kind of extreme. :)

  • Knock-offs?

  • Same as ripoffs.

  • I've got it!

    Pastiche.

  • Rather fancy. And I believe a lot of people would ask what it means (even if it's obvious).

  • some of this were out before scooby was dude ! im old enough to remember them !!! peace !

  • For the absolute last time, Scooby came before ALL of these shows. WHY would I make a video saying that they are all ripoffs if ANY one of them came before Scooby? What sense does that make? All anyone has to do is some research to prove I'm correct.

  • You do know some of those cartoons came out before scooby doo did but they were never as popular. I love just about all hanna barbera cartoons but scooby doo will always be my number one

  • No, EVERY SINGLE ONE of these shows came AFTER Scooby Doo. I'm glad you love Scooby--I do as well--but I'm somewhat surprised that not every Scooby fan knows this fact.

  • captain cave man was a rip on charley's angels

  • AND Scooby Doo. But more so on Scooby because the oddball sidekick is the star. Possibly a tiny bit of "Wacky Races" in there also because Captain Caveman resembles the Boulder Brothers.

  • Did you consider Inch High Private Eye? Cool video though.

  • I certainly did. I categorize "Inch High" as a semi-ripoff because even though he's comedic and unusual, Inch is the starring LEADER instead of the starring SIDEKICK. Thank you, by the way!

  • josey and the pussy cats had there own shaggy and a muscle bound fred

  • My video's description explains why Josie isn't on this list.

  • No, shmoo first appeared in the FORTIES.

Not a rip off, and better. Much, much better

  • This has already been discussed before. Shmoo the CHARACTER is not a ripoff, but the actual SHOW definitely is.

  • And if it's so much better, why did it only last one season?

  • They may be a rip off of Scooby doo but Fangface and Captain Caveman are classics cartoons in their own right.

  • They all are! :)

  • There's one missing....Mister T LOL!!! Scooby Doo Rip off all the way

  • It was a LITTLE too serious in tone to be even a semi-ripoff. Not a bad call, though!:-)

  • Something has been bugging me. Scooby's not oversize he's normal sized for his breed. Look at him. He's clearly a great dane. Those dogs are bred to be huge.

On their hind legs they're taller than the average man. They're also very strong and lanky. Scooby's a normal cartoon great dane. Now Marmaduke could be seen as an oversize dane.

  • Well, anyone who is a true fan of Scooby already knows he's a Great Dane. The greatest Great Dane there is!

  • Nah. Scooby Doo beats them all to a punch!

  • Exactly. As much as I love the other shows, Scooby's still the best. Ripoffs can NEVER be better than the original. All they do is repeat the same idea in a different way.

  • (0:13) Doesn't the New Shmoo look like a ...... (hey just saying!)

  • ......

  • Actually, they're NOT "Ripoffs" if they came BEFORE Scooby-Doo! And especially if they were from the SAME Creators. William Hanna and Joseph Barbara... Hell there was even "Moby Dick" and they had a SEAL named "Scooby". Also by H&B!

  • Same creators or not, they ARE all ripoffs, and every single one of them came AFTER Scooby-Doo.

  • And what does Moby Dick and Scooby the seal have to do with this anyway? They were the ones created BEFORE Scooby-Doo.

  • Ironic that you left out Midnight Patrol. I loved that show!

As far as the 70's cartoons, however, somehow you forgot "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids." They had a canine sidekick named Elvis.

  • I really did think about adding Midnight Patrol, but I ultimately didn't for the same reason concerning "Denver" (look at recent messages). And I didn't forget "Butch" (someone else questioned this as well); it's just that Elvis wasn't the star of the show.

  • Aren't they all Hanna-Barbera shows..And they all had the same cast doing the voices..so funny. As kids we didn't know better.

  • Funny you made this. Everytime I'd see one of these shows for the very first time on USA's Cartoon Express or Cartoon Network, I'd always joke that Hanna-Barbera loved to rip themselves off. :-)
