I believe it is the full name that is shortened to Nuala. I have heard it pronounced "Fa'noola," and that it means "Pale Shoulders"

Not pale, but White. Fíonn is white. Mílítheach is pale. So, the correct translation is white shoulders (Fíonn gualainn)
